Preprints
Ambiente & Sociedade encourages the publication of preprint articles on the public platform SciELO Preprints, so that, if applicable, they can be openly discussed before being published.
It is important that authors indicate in the Open Science and Research Ethics Compliance Form the prior submission of the article as a preprint.
In case of acceptance and publication of the article in Ambiente & Sociedade, authors must update the records on the preprint server and provide the complete reference of the publication made in this journal.
Peer Review Process
The manuscript evaluation process works as follows:
(1) Preliminary Evaluation: The journal's technical team, together with the chief editors, conducts a verification of compliance with the editorial policy, including supplementary documents, such as:

Evaluation of scope compliance (read more in the "Focus and Scope" section).

Verification of the submission of all necessary supplementary documents (read the "Supplementary Documents" section).
In this phase, manuscripts may be rejected if they do not meet the scope of Ambiente & Sociedade and/or if the requested documents are not submitted.
Authors will be notified to make adjustments up to two times, and if the manuscript still has pending issues, the work will be rejected.
(2) Initial Screening: The assistant editors of the journal review the manuscript to check compliance with the publication guidelines on the website (in the Instructions for Authors). After that, if necessary, the editors will request adjustments from the authors according to the editorial criteria of Ambiente & Sociedade. The sooner the author meets the requirements, the faster the evaluation process will be. The maximum time to respond to the pending issues is two weeks. If these are not addressed, Ambiente & Sociedade may reject the manuscript. In such cases, authors may resubmit the article with the corrected issues. It is very important that authors pay attention to compliance with the guidelines presented on this page. Authors will be notified to make adjustments up to two times, and if the manuscript still has pending issues, the work will be rejected. In this phase, an anti-plagiarism evaluation is conducted (read the "Adoption of Similarity Check Software" section).
(3) Pre-Analysis: The manuscript will be evaluated by the associate editors. At this stage, some requirements are analyzed, such as originality, methodological soundness, and interdisciplinary discussion. Failure to meet the requirements may result in the rejection of the text. The evaluation is done without identifying the authors.
(4) Assignment: If the articles are approved in the pre-analysis stage, the manuscripts will be forwarded to the associate editors. They oversee the evaluation and appoint reviewers who will proceed with the review of the article.
(5) Peer Review: In this final stage, the manuscript is reviewed by a pair of reviewers. If the reviews are contradictory, the manuscript may be reviewed by the chief editors.
(6) New Rounds of Evaluation: It is very common for reviewers to suggest a series of adjustments in the editorial decision, which will trigger a new round of evaluation. The sooner the author provides the changes, the faster the analysis process of this new round will be. For this new round, authors must resubmit the revised manuscript in the ScholarOne system and must do so while maintaining the original manuscript type (Step 1: Type, Title & Abstract), and not as "review". Failure to comply with this requirement will result in the manuscript being returned for correction.
Important: The ScholarOne System operates on Eastern Time, not Brazilian Time. Therefore, we recommend that authors submit revisions and corrections at least two days before the deadline set by the ScholarOne system and communicated in emails to authors.
Since 2012, Ambiente & Sociedade has published all its articles in a bilingual version: in the original language (Portuguese or Spanish) and the English version. Optionally, approved articles may also be published in all three languages. The costs of translation into any language will be the authors' responsibility.
Articles approved in stage 4 will be published in the current volume, provided they are accepted for publication by August of the current year or until the maximum number of articles published annually is reached.

Open Data
In line with Open Science communication practices, the journal adopts the following practices in its editorial policy:

We encourage the authors to share data sets, instruments, statistical analysis scripts, protocols, and additional materials in appropriate data repositories.

We also encourage the authors to share software, code, models, algorithms, protocols, methods, and other useful materials related to research to facilitate reproducibility and data reuse.

Research data vary according to the area of knowledge and include textual documents, spreadsheets, statistics, lab notebooks, field notebooks, diaries, questionnaires, transcripts, audio files, videos, photographs, methodologies, workflows, partial reports, and other materials prepared and/or collected during the research development.

If any of the files mentioned above are shared, we suggest including the access address to the materials in the manuscript.

Fees
Due to the reduction in financial support from research funding agencies, Ambiente & Sociedade has been charging an online submission fee for manuscripts since 2012.
As of 01/10/2022, the submission fee will be R$150.00 (One Hundred and Fifty Reais) per submitted manuscript. Authors must pay an additional fee of R$600.00 (Six Hundred Reais) for manuscripts approved for publication. This payment reform aims to reduce the submission cost by increasing the fee only for articles approved for publication, as production costs for inclusion in the SciELO collection must be covered.
The submission fee is non-refundable in case of manuscript rejection or incorrect payment. The editors hope to count on the collaboration of all authors by meeting the requirements that guide the journal's production.

For authors without a bank account in Brazil, the payment of fees must be made exclusively through the PayPal service. The fees will be R$170.00 (One Hundred and Seventy Reais) for submission and R$620.00 (Six Hundred and Twenty Reais) for publication. In both cases, the service fee (charged by PayPal) is included. For this, authors must send an email to revistaambienteesociedade@gmail.com requesting this payment method.
Authors must attach the payment receipt of the submission fee in the system during the online submission in the "File upload" section as "Supplemental File NOT for Review". The submission will only be considered if the payment receipt is attached.
A fee of R$150.00 (One Hundred and Fifty Reais) is required to submit a book review.
Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy
Ambiente & Sociedade adopts the publication ethics principles of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) code of conduct.
Ethical issues and/or matters that may harm the journal's reputation will be evaluated and addressed by the Editorial Board of Ambiente & Sociedade.
In cases of misconduct, the retraction policy will be applied by the journal, following the Guidelines on Best Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication proposed by SciELO.
The registration and publication of errata and retractions will follow the recommendations proposed by SciELO. In case of doubts, consult:
Policy on Conflict of Interest
Conflicts of interest can be of a personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial nature. Conflicts of interest may occur when authors, reviewers, or editors have interests that could influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts. When submitting the manuscript, authors are responsible for acknowledging and disclosing financial or other conflicts that may have influenced the work. If there is, even potentially, a conflict of interest, the author(s) must disclose it in a signed document attached to the submission platform. Adoption of similarity software
All manuscripts will undergo a plagiarism check using CopySpyder software (or equivalent software) during the initial screening.
If elements indicate a considerable absence of proper citation, the article will be preliminarily rejected. If similar passages can be corrected and there are no indications of bad faith, the article will be returned to the author for corrections.
On the Use of Artificial Intelligence
This policy guides the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) in our publication, ensuring the integrity, transparency, and excellence of the research we endorse.
Authorship: AI tools or similar do not qualify for authorship and cannot be included as a co-author.
Responsibility: The authors must carefully supervise the use of AI, and they are responsible for errors, plagiarism, and other malpractices that may occur in their research due to the use of AI mechanisms. Ambiente & Sociedade understands that the responsibility for the article's content lies with the people who sign it.
Authenticity and Originality: Authors who employ AI to generate or analyze content must ensure their work is original and significantly contributes to the field of study.
Declaration of AI Use: All manuscripts that use AI, whether in generation, analysis, review, or any other capacity, must clearly indicate this in the materials and methods section. Additionally, authors must explicitly mention the extent of AI involvement.
Transparency: Authors must be transparent about the use of AI in the manuscript writing process, including detailed information (name, version, model, source, parameters used) on how the technology was used and the role of AI in developing the text.
Limitations: If AI is used as a research tool, authors must discuss its limitations and potential biases in the text.
Gender and Sex Issues
The editorial team of the journal Ambiente & Sociedade, as well as the authors who publish in the journal, must always observe the guidelines Sex and Gender Equity in Research (Sex and Gender Equity in Research – SAGER). The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of guidelines that guide the reporting of information on sex and gender in the study design, data analysis, and results and interpretation of findings. In addition, the journal Ambiente & Sociedade observes gender equity policy in the composition of its editorial board.
Ethics Committee
The journal Ambiente & Sociedade pays strict attention to ethical standards when conducting research.
Authors must attach proof of approval from the ethics committee of the institution responsible for approving the research. If approval was not required, authors must provide a justification (based on the most current legislation).
The statement must be attached in the ScholarOne system during online submission, in the "File upload" section as "Supplemental File NOT for Review".
For research conducted in Brazil: Research involving human subjects must be registered on the Plataforma Brasil, as defined in Resolution 196/96. The Chapter XI of Resolution No. 674, dated May 6, 2022, presents relevant information, such as which research is exempt from registration on the Plataforma Brasil. It is mandatory that authors include in the manuscript the name of the ethics committee responsible for approval, along with the reference number of the approved project.
For research conducted outside Brazil: Authors must follow the specific recommendations, legislation, and/or standards of the country where the research was conducted and/or funded.
