Small wild mammals naturally infected with Schistosoma mansoni

Cavia aperea aperea (Erxleben, 1777), Holochilus brasiliensis leucogaster (Brandt, 1827) and Lutreolina sp., small wild mammals, captured in the municipalities of Taubaté, Americana and Paulinia, State of S. Paulo, Brazil, were found to be naturally infected with Schistosoma mansoni. Viable eggs of the parasite were detected in the feces of both Holochilus b. leucogaster and Lutreolina sp. As the complete cycle was obtained, the schistosome is now being maintained at laboratory conditions. Ecological, pathological and parasitological researches are in progress.
