ABSTRACT The effects of the evaporative cooling system with negative pressure (ECS) and water spray on the roof (WSR) on physiological variables, thyroid hormones and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (N:L) in lactating sows were evaluated. Sixty-one lactating females were divided in the two thermal environments, being 30 in SRE and 31 in the AAT shed in the summer. The air temperature and humidity, respiratory frequency (RF), surface temperatures (ST) and rectal (RT), serum thyroxine and triiodothyronine concentration, number of neutrophils and lymphocytes and the N/L ratio were determined. In the afternoon, the matrices in ECS (Tar: 25.0°C and THI: 74.7) and WSR (Tar: 27.6°C and THI: 77.3) were exposed to heat stress. In the morning, RF, ST and RT were lower in ECS (49 breaths.min -1 , 31.1°C and 38.5°C, respectively) than WSR (54 breaths.min -1 , 32.8°C and 38.6°C) and also in the afternoon ECS (55 breaths.min -1 , 30.3°C and 38.8°C, respectively) and WSR (65 breaths.min -1 , 31.4°C and 39.1°C, respectively). Animals under WSR shed presented lower concentrations of T4 than animals under ECS (37.84 vs 42.22nmol.L -1 ). In a tropical environment, in the summer, lactating sows of both systems maintain homeothermia.

ABSTRACT This study was carried out to compare the allometric coefficients (b) that describe the cuts and organs’ growth of quails kept in different thermal environments. Three hundred meat quails were distributed in a completely randomized design with two treatments (climatized environment (CE) with 26°C of ambient temperature and environment without climatization (EWC, 32°C)) and six replicates of 25 birds. Allometric equations based on weekly fasting weight (WF) for the breast weight (BW), thigh (TW), drumstick (DW), wing (WW), heart (HW), liver (LW) gizzard (GW) and intestine (IW) were performed. To compare the "b" of the cuts and organs parallelism tests were carried out. There was no difference between the "b" in any cuts and organs of quails kept in CE or EWC environments. We observed that the BW and DW showed positive heterogonic growth (b>1), TW isogonic growth (b=1), and WW and organs negative heterogonic growth (b<1) in relation PJ. The "b" that describes the growth of cuts and organs of quails kept in CE or EWC environments are not affected. The breast and drumstick presented late growth, the wing and the organs early growth, and the thigh showed a proportional increase with the fasting weight.

Allantoin is the main product of uric acid oxidation and was found to be augmented in atherosclerotic plaque in human autopsy and in animal models of atherosclerosis. Uric acid is abundant in human plasma and is prone to oxidation in inflammatory conditions such as atherosclerosis. In this study, we found a significant increase in plasma uric acid (P=0.002) and allantoin (P=0.025) in participants of the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil) that presented common carotid intima-media thickness (c-IMT) within the 75th percentile (c-IMT≥P75). Multiple linear regression showed an association of c-IMT with uric acid (β=0.0004, P=0.014) and allantoin (β=0.018, P=0.008). This association was independent of age, the traditional risk factor LDL/HDL ratio, and non-traditional risk factors: pulse pressure, neck circumference, and the inflammatory marker myeloperoxidase. The independent and strong association of allantoin with c-IMT shows that it might be a useful marker, along with other traditional risk factors, to evaluate an early stage of atherosclerosis.

RESUMO Davilla kunthii A. St. –Hil.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

The given data of the literature on the antimicrobial activity of the essential oils are treated from the experimental point of view, and they consider a possible clinical application of the oils. The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors that can influence on antimicrobial activity of essential oils, in vitro, based on preview data from literature. We noticed that the tests and evaluations of the antimicrobial activity of the essential oils can be hindered by the volatility of the oil, its insolubility in water and its chemistry complexity. These details make the results obtained on literature difficult to compare. The used methods differ broadly and important factors that influence the results are frequently neglectful. After a bibliographical rising, we concluded that a large attention should be given to some factors when we work with essential oils: the used technique, the growth medium, the inoculums density, the tested essential oil and the used emulsifying. It’s necessary to define and follow a right and standard methodology to make antimicrobial activity testes of essential oils.

E. coli was submitted to a 5G electromagnetic field generated by a alternate 60 Hz voltage source. The differences on growth and glucose consume in control and exposed groups were evaluated using the non-parametric Mann-Whitney U-test. There was a significant difference in glucose consume and growth in E. coli after 8 hours of exposition to electromagnetic field. It can be concluded that electromagnetic field had a positive effect in consume of glucose and growth of E. coli. The cause of these results can be explained by an increasing of glucose entrance through membrane due to the stimulated transport system via Facility Diffusion or cyclotron resonance. The growth can be caused by shortening of lag phase and excitement of log phase.

The effects of in vivo chronic treatment and in vitro addition of imipramine, a tricyclic antidepressant, or fluoxetine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, on the cortical membrane-bound Na+,K+-ATPase activity were studied. Adult Wistar rats received daily intraperitoneal injections of 10 mg/kg of imipramine or fluoxetine for 14 days. Twelve hours after the last injection rats were decapitated and synaptic plasma membranes (SPM) from cerebral cortex were prepared to determine Na+,K+-ATPase activity. There was a significant decrease (10%) in enzyme activity after imipramine but fluoxetine treatment caused a significant increase (27%) in Na+,K+-ATPase activity compared to control (P<0.05, ANOVA; N = 7 for each group). When assayed in vitro, the addition of both drugs to SPM of naive rats caused a dose-dependent decrease in enzyme activity, with the maximal inhibition (60-80%) occurring at 0.5 mM. We suggest that a) imipramine might decrease Na+,K+-ATPase activity by altering membrane fluidity, as previously proposed, and b) stimulation of this enzyme might contribute to the therapeutic efficacy of fluoxetine, since brain Na+,K+-ATPase activity is decreased in bipolar patients.

Thirty cases of chromoblastomycosis were diagnosed at Hospital dos Servidores do Estado do Maranhão, from November, 1988 to March, 1993. The authors report 2 (6.6%) cases, that presented an association with leprosy. The first patient developed both diseases together, showing palpable bilateral cubital nerves, perforanting ulcer of the right foot, infiltration and lesions in verrucoid plaques in left leg, with positive biopsyfor dimorphic leprosy. The second case, a patient with history of lepromatous leprosy for 30 years without treatment, with vegetant lesions with a warty aspect in right elbow for 12 months, histopatologic and positive culture for chromoblastomycosis. The possible factors for development of this disease in these patients are discussed.
