OBJETIVO: avaliar o tempo necessário para realização da colagem de braquetes pelas técnicas direta (CDB) e indireta (CIB), mensurando o tempo despendido entre a parte laboratorial (CIB) e a parte clínica (CDB e CIB), e a prevalência de descolamentos durante o período de observação de 24 semanas. MÉTODOS: dezessete pacientes (7 homens e 10 mulheres), com idade média de 21 anos, com necessidade de tratamento ortodôntico, foram selecionados para participar desse estudo. Foram utilizados um total de 304 braquetes, sendo que 151 foram colados pela técnica de CDB e 153 pela CIB, com o mesmo tipo de braquete e material de colagem. Os dados foram submetidos ao teste não paramétrico de Wilcoxon, com significância de 5%. RESULTADOS: o tempo total para realização da CIB foi maior em relação à CDB (p < 0,001). Levando em consideração apenas a fase clínica, foi observado que o tempo para CIB foi menor em relação a CDB (p < 0,001). A comparação entre o tempo despendido para o posicionamento dos braquetes em laboratório mais o tempo em clínica para CIB com o tempo em clínica para a CDB revelou que não houve diferença significativa (p = 0,910), nem tampouco quanto à prevalência de descolamento dos braquetes. CONCLUSÃO: a CIB apresenta-se como uma utilidade clínica singular, pois o tempo em clínica foi menor que o da CDB. O tempo despendido no posicionamento dos braquetes no laboratório e de execução clínica da CIB foi semelhante ao tempo gasto pela CDB, a quantidade de descolamentos foi semelhante entre as técnicas.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the time spent for direct (DBB - direct bracket bonding) and indirect (IBB - indirect bracket bonding) bracket bonding techniques. The time length of laboratorial (IBB) and clinical steps (DBB and IBB) as well as the prevalence of loose bracket after a 24-week follow-up were evaluated. METHODS: Seventeen patients (7 men and 10 women) with a mean age of 21 years, requiring orthodontic treatment were selected for this study. A total of 304 brackets were used (151 DBB and 153 IBB). The same bracket type and bonding material were used in both groups. Data were submitted to statistical analysis by Wilcoxon non-parametric test at 5% level of significance. RESULTS: Considering the total time length, the IBB technique was more time-consuming than the DBB (p < 0.001). However, considering only the clinical phase, the IBB took less time than the DBB (p < 0.001). There was no significant difference (p = 0.910) for the time spent during laboratorial positioning of the brackets and clinical session for IBB in comparison to the clinical procedure for DBB. Additionally, no difference was found as for the prevalence of loose bracket between both groups. CONCLUSION: the IBB can be suggested as a valid clinical procedure since the clinical session was faster and the total time spent for laboratorial positioning of the brackets and clinical procedure was similar to that of DBB. In addition, both approaches resulted in similar frequency of loose bracket.

OBJETIVOS: a proposta desse trabalho foi comparar, por meio das análises cefalométricas de McNamara, Legan e Burstone, os traçados de previsão manuais e os digitalizados pelos programas Dentofacial Planner Plus e Dolphin Imaging, com os resultados pós-cirúrgicos. MÉTODOS: foram selecionadas as telerradiografias pré- e pós-cirúrgicas (seis meses) de 25 pacientes face longa submetidos a cirurgia ortognática combinada. Foram realizados os traçados de previsão manual e computadorizados de cada paciente, comparando-os, cefalometricamente, com os resultados pós-cirúrgicos. Esse protocolo foi repetido para avaliação do erro do método e realizou-se a avaliação estatística por meio da análise de variância e sobreteste de Tukey. RESULTADOS: observou-se uma maior frequência de variáveis cefalométricas que não diferiram estatisticamente do resultado pós-cirúrgico real para o método manual, seguido dos programas DFPLus e Dolphin; observando-se valores cefalométricos similares para a maioria das variáveis. CONCLUSÃO: concluiu-se que o método manual pareceu mais fidedigno, embora a previsibilidade dos métodos avaliados (computadorizados e manual) tenha se mostrado razoavelmente satisfatória e similar.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare by means of McNamara as well as Legan and Burstone's cephalometric analyses, both manual and digitized (by Dentofacial Planner Plus and Dolphin Image software) prediction tracings to post-surgical results. METHODS: Pre and post-surgical teleradiographs (6 months) of 25 long face patients subjected to combined orthognathic surgery were selected. Manual and computerized prediction tracings of each patient were performed and cephalometrically compared to post-surgical outcomes. This protocol was repeated in order to evaluate the method error and statistical evaluation was conducted by means of analysis of variance and Tukey's test. RESULTS: A higher frequency of cephalometric variables, which were not statistically different from the actual post-surgical results for the manual method, was observed. It was followed by DFPlus and Dolphin software; in which similar cephalometric values for most variables were observed. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that the manual method seemed more reliable, although the predictability of the evaluated methods (computerized and manual) proved to be reasonably satisfactory and similar.

OBJETIVO: a proposta desse estudo foi avaliar, por meio de microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV), a interface adesiva após a descolagem de acessórios ortodônticos, fixados em dentes bovinos com emprego de adesivo hidrofílico e hidrofóbico, em condições distintas de umidade do substrato dentário. MÉTODOS: foram utilizados 20 incisivos inferiores, divididos em quatro grupos (n = 5): Grupo I , empregou-se o sistema de colagem contendo o primer hidrofílico Transbond MIP e a pasta adesiva Transbond XT, aplicados em substrato úmido; Grupo II, empregou-se o sistema de colagem primer hidrofóbico Transbond XT e pasta adesiva em substrato úmido; Grupos III e IV, os braquetes foram colados com os mesmos sistemas de união dos Grupos I e II, porém com esmalte dentário seco. Removidos os acessórios, avaliou-se em MEV, em diferentes magnificações, a interface adesiva e a interação dos sistemas adesivos com o esmalte dentário. As imagens foram avaliadas qualitativamente, observando-se o embricamento mecânico para o adesivo hidrófilo em quaisquer condições de substrato. RESULTADOS: a falta de umidade no esmalte condicionado permitiu uma melhor interação entre os materiais de ligação e a estrutura adamantina. O adesivo hidrofóbico apresentou o pior resultado de interação micromecânica quando aplicado a uma estrutura dentária úmida; já o sistema hidrofílico mostrou-se versátil, obtendo resultados aceitáveis em condições de umidade e excelente interação na ausência de contaminação. CONCLUSÃO: os autores afirmam que a melhor condição do esmalte dentário para a aplicação de primers é com a ausência de umidade.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) the remaining adhesive interface after debonding orthodontic attachments bonded to bovine teeth with the use of hydrophilic and hydrophobic primers under different dental substrate moisture conditions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty mandibular incisors were divided into four groups (n=5). In Group I, bracket bonding was performed with Transbond MIP hydrophilic primer and Transbond XT adhesive paste applied to moist substrate, and in Group II a bonding system comprising Transbond XT hydrophobic primer and adhesive paste was applied to moist substrate. Brackets were bonded to the specimens in Groups III and IV using the same adhesive systems, but on dry dental enamel. The images were qualitatively assessed by SEM. RESULTS: The absence of moisture in etched enamel enabled better interaction between bonding materials and the adamantine structure. The hydrophobic primer achieved the worst micromechanical interlocking results when applied to a moist dental structure, whereas the hydrophilic system proved versatile, yielding acceptable results in moist conditions and excellent interaction in the absence of contamination. CONCLUSION: The authors assert that the best condition for the application of primers to dental enamel occurs in the absence of moisture.

AIM: The purpose of the present study was to analyze the relationship between root formation of the first premolars and skeletal maturation stages identified in hand-wrist radiographs. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out involving the panoramic and hand-wrist radiographs obtained on the same date of 232 patients, 123 boys and 109 girls aged 4 years and 5 months to 17 years and 12 months. Root formation stages of the first premolars were related to the ossification stages of the sesamoid bone, epiphyseal stages of the phalanx of the thumb and epiphyseal stages of the radius. RESULTS: The studied variables demonstrated statistically significant correlations. CONCLUSION: Roots of the lower first premolars do not reach 2/3 of their complete length before adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to use facial analysis to determine the effects of rapid maxillary expansion (RME) on nasal morphology in children in the stages of primary and mixed dentition, with posterior cross-bite. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Facial photographs (front view and profile) of 60 patients in the pre-expansion period, immediate post-expansion period and one year following rapid maxillary expansion with a Haas appliance were evaluated on 2 occasions by 3 experienced orthodontists independently, with a 2-week interval between evaluations. The examiners were instructed to assess nasal morphology and had no knowledge regarding the content of the study. Intraexaminer and interexaminer agreement (assessed using the Kappa statistic) was acceptable. RESULTS: From the analysis of the mode of the examiners' findings, no alterations in nasal morphology occurred regarding the following aspects: dorsum of nose, alar base, nasal width of middle third and nasal base. Alterations were only detected in the nasolabial angle in 1.64% of the patients between the pre-expansion and immediate post-expansion photographs. In 4.92% of the patients between the immediate post-expansion period and 1 year following expansion; and in 6.56% of the patients between the pre-expansion period and one year following expansion. CONCLUSIONS: RME performed on children in stages of primary and mixed dentition did not have any impact on nasal morphology, as assessed using facial analysis.

OBJETIVO: verificar o percentual de pacientes que necessitaram extração de dentes permanentes, pré-molares, dentre aqueles tratados com extração de dentes decíduos para correção do apinhamento primário na dentição mista, bem como analisar as possíveis variáveis relacionadas. MÉTODOS: a amostra foi composta por documentações ortodônticas de 70 pacientes na dentição permanente, cujo tratamento iniciou-se na dentição mista com planejamento de um programa de extrações seriadas (PES). Todos os prontuários foram analisados por um único examinador, no intuito de verificar se o PES havia sido cumprido com a extração de dentes permanentes ou se havia sido realizada apenas extração de dentes decíduos. Verificou-se a associação entre a extração de dentes permanentes e as variáveis padrão facial; relação sagital entre as arcadas dentárias; IMPA; proporção tamanho do segundo molar permanente inferior/espaço retromolar; mecânica de controle de espaço e discrepância de modelo (teste exato de Fisher para as variáveis categóricas e modelo de regressão logística para as variáveis numéricas). Os resultados foram considerados para p<0,05. RESULTADOS: dos pacientes que haviam sido tratados com extração de dentes decíduos para a correção do apinhamento na dentição mista, 70% necessitaram de extração de dentes permanentes. A análise estatística não mostrou associação significativa entre as variáveis estudadas e a necessidade de extração de dentes permanentes, com exceção da variável discrepância de modelo. CONCLUSÃO: a discrepância de modelo representou a principal determinante de extração de pré-molares no PES.

OBJECTIVE: To verify the amount of patients who had to undergo extraction of permanent teeth (premolars) in a population of patients treated with extraction of deciduous teeth for correction of incisor crowding in the mixed dentition, as well as to analyze the possibly related variables. METHODS: The sample was composed of orthodontic records of 70 patients in the permanent dentition whose treatment included the serial extraction program (SEP) in the mixed dentition. All records were analyzed by a single examiner in order to verify whether the SEP had been carried out with extraction of either permanent teeth or deciduous teeth only. The association between extraction of permanent teeth and the variables lateral facial pattern, sagittal relationship between the dental arches, IMPA, proportion between size of the mandibular second molar/retromolar space, mechanics for spacing control and tooth-arch size discrepancy (exact test of Fisher for categorical variables and logistic regression for numeric variables, p<0.05) were investigated. RESULTS: Of the patients treated with extraction of deciduous teeth, 70% also needed extraction of the permanent teeth. The statistical analysis did not show any significant correlation between the variables analyzed and the need for extraction of permanent teeth, except for tooth-arch size discrepancy. CONCLUSION: Tooth-arch size discrepancy represented the main factor that determined premolar extraction in the SEP.

OBJETIVO: avaliar o Índice de Remanescente Adesivo (IRA) em dentes bovinos após a descolagem de braquetes com e sem tratamento na base. METODOLOGIA: foram utilizados três sistemas de colagem ortodôntica para os dois padrões de base. Os dentes bovinos foram divididos em seis grupos de 40, de acordo com a base do braquete e o sistema de colagem. Vinte e quatro horas após a colagem foram realizados os testes de compressão em uma máquina de ensaios. A avaliação do IRA foi realizada em um estereomicroscópio por três examinadores calibrados. Foi utilizado o teste não paramétrico de Kruskal-Wallis, seguido do método de Dunn, para fazer as comparações múltiplas entre todos os grupos. RESULTADOS E CONCLUSÕES: observou-se que o tratamento das bases dos braquetes com óxido de alumínio não foi determinante para o aumento da adesividade entre o braquete e o adesivo. O grupo em que se utilizou braquetes com tratamento na base e adesivo TXT (3M-Unitek) + Transbond Plus SEP (3M-Unitek) apresentou a maior parte das fraturas na interface dente-adesivo (escore 4).

AIM: To assess the Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) in bovine teeth after debonding mesh bases and sandblasted orthodontic bracket bases. METHODS: Were used three bonding systems for the two standards of base. The bovine teeth were divided into 6 groups of 40, according to the bracket base and to the bonding system. Twenty four hours after bonding they had been carried through shear bond strength tests in a universal testing machine. The assessment of ARI was performed in a stereomicroscopy by three calibrated examiners. It was used the non-parametric Kruskall-Wallis test, followed by Dunn's method, to do the multiple comparisons among all groups. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: It was observed that the aluminum oxide sandblasting bracket bases was not determinative to the increase of the adhesiveness between bracket and adhesive. The group where it was used sandblasted orthodontic bracket bases and bonding system TXT (3M-Unitek) + Transbond Plus SEP (3M-Unitek) presented the majority of the failures at the teeth-adhesive interface (score 4).

OBJETIVO: o presente estudo cefalométrico longitudinal investigou as alterações espontâneas ocorridas em crianças com má oclusão Classe II, divisão 1, Padrão II. MÉTODOS: foram selecionadas 40 crianças, 20 meninos e 20 meninas, distribuídas na faixa etária compreendida entre 6 e 14 anos de idade. Para avaliar o comportamento das bases apicais, dos incisivos e do tecido mole, as seguintes grandezas cefalométricas foram mensuradas: SN.Ba, SNA, SNB, SND, SN.Pog, ANB, NAP, SN.PP, SN.GoGn, SN.Gn, Ar.Go.Gn, 1.PP, 1.NA, 1.SN, IMPA e ANL. As seguintes grandezas alcançaram significância estatística com o crescimento: SNB, SND,SN.Pog,ANB,NAP,SN.GoGn,SN.Gn,Ar.Go.Gn e IMPA. RESULTADOS: os resultados demonstraram que as principais alterações quantitativas registradas estavam relacionadas com o crescimento mandibular,independentemente do gênero. A mandíbula deslocou-se para frente, com tendência de rotação no sentido anti-horário e com conseqüente redução nos ângulos de convexidade facial. No entanto, as oscilações quantitativas nas grandezas cefalométricas não foram suficientes para mudar a morfologia dentofacial ao longo do período de acompanhamento. CONCLUSÃO: conclui-se, portanto, que a morfologia facial é definida precocemente e é mantida, configurando o determinismo genético na determinação do arcabouço esquelético.

AIM: The current longitudinal cephalometric study investigated the spontaneous alterations in growing Class II, division 1, Pattern II patients. METHODS: Forty children (twenty boys and twenty girls) with ages ranging between 6 and 14 years were selected to comprise the sample. The behavior of the apical bases, incisors and facial profile was evaluated on the basis of the following cephalometric measurements: SN.Ba, SNA, SNB, SND, SN.Pog, ANB, NAP, SN.GoGn, SN.PP, SN.Gn, Ar.Go.Gn, 1.PP, 1.NA, 1.SN, IMPA and nasolabial angle. The following measurements were statistically significant along growth: SNB, SND, SN.Pog, ANB, NAP, SN.GoGn, SN.Gn, Ar.Go.Gn and IMPA. RESULTS: The results showed that the main quantitative alterations were related to mandibular growth, regardless of gender. The mandible was anteriorly displaced and tended to present a counter-clockwise rotation and consequent decrease in the facial convexity angles. However, the quantitative changes in the cephalometric measurements were not sufficient to change the dentofacial morphology during the follow-up period. CONCLUSION: Therefore, facial morphology seems to be defined early and does not change along growth.

OBJETIVOS: determinar a morfologia das 3ª e 4ª vértebras cervicais representativa dos estágios de pré-pico, pico e pós-pico de velocidade de crescimento estatural, definidos previamente pelos centros de ossificação do primeiro dedo em radiografias carpais ou do dedo polegar. MÉTODOS: foram utilizadas 120 telerradiografias em norma lateral de 106 pacientes selecionados da clínica de Ortodontia Preventiva e Interceptiva da Faculdade de Odontologia de Araçatuba-UNESP e Profis/HRAC-USP que apresentavam as correspondentes radiografias carpais ou do dedo polegar. As telerradiografias foram divididas em três grupos de 40 radiografias, de acordo com os estágios maturacionais pré-pico, pico e pós-pico, definidos pela imagem do primeiro dedo. A morfologia dos corpos das 3ª e 4ª vértebras cervicais foi determinada por dois examinadores devidamente calibrados em dois tempos diferentes. CONCLUSÕES: concluiu-se que o formato retangular horizontal com borda inferior reta foi representativo do estágio de pré-pico, independentemente da vértebra analisada. Já o formato retangular horizontal com borda inferior curva, especialmente se encontrado em C4, ou o formato quadrado com borda inferior reta caracterizaram o pico de velocidade de crescimento. O formato quadrado ou, principalmente, o retangular vertical com borda inferior curva determinaram o estágio de pós-pico de velocidade de crescimento da adolescência.

AIM: To determine the morphology of the third and fourth cervical vertebrae which represent the pre-peak, peak and post-peak stages of statural growth, previously defined by ossification centers of the thumb in hand-wrist or thumb periapical radiographs. METHODS: The sample was comprised of 120 lateral cephalometric radiographs of 106 patients from the Interceptive Orthodontics Clinic of the School of Dentistry of Araçatuba/UNESP and from PROFIS /Hospital for Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies/USP. All patients had hand-wrist or corresponding thumb periapical radiographs available. The lateral radiographs were divided into three groups of 40 radiographs according to the pre-peak, peak and post-peak maturational stages, defined by the radiographic image of the thumb. The morphology of the third and fourth cervical vertebrae was determined by two calibrated examiners in two different times. CONCLUSIONS: The findings show that the horizontal, rectangular-shaped vertebra with straight lower border represented the pre-peak stage, regardless of the analyzed vertebra. The horizontal, rectangular-shaped vertebra with curved lower border, mainly if found in C4, or the square-shaped vertebra with straight lower border was typical of the growth peak. The square-shaped or, mainly, the rectangular-shaped vertebra with curved lower border determined the post-peak stage of adolescent growth spurt.

OBJETIVO: avaliar o efeito da retração anterior sobre o ponto A sagital e verticalmente, bem como a correlação e a previsibilidade do comportamento dessas estruturas. METODOLOGIA: sessenta telerradiografias em norma lateral foram usadas, tomadas no início e no final do tratamento ortodôntico corretivo, a partir de 30 pacientes (22 feminino e 8 masculino) com idade entre 10 e 17 anos antes do tratamento, com má oclusão de Classe II, divisão 1 ou Classe I, que foram submetidos às extrações dos quatro primeiros pré-molares ou somente dois primeiros pré-molares superiores. Além das variáveis .1NA,1-NA, 1.PP e 1-A, mensurações lineares horizontais e verticais foram feitas em relação a uma linha de referência construída a partir da linha SN menos 7º e uma linha perpendicular a ela. Todos os dados foram mensurados duas vezes, e as médias foram submetidas ao teste t emparelhado, de correlação linear e de regressão. RESULTADOS: em média, o ponto A retraiu 0,71mm e movimentou para baixo 2,38mm, seguindo 1,03mm e 4,13mm de retração, respectivamente, do ápice radicular e da borda incisal, e 2,35mm de extrusão dentária. A retração do ponto A apresentou correlação positiva em relação ao ápice radicular (r = 0,75; alfa < 0,0001) e em relação à retração da borda incisal (r = 0,70; alfa < 0,0001), mostrando um comportamento ântero-posterior previsível. CONCLUSÕES: concluiu-se que o ponto A retraiu-se e movimentou-se para baixo seguindo o dente, e a retração do ponto A em relação aos incisivos foi previsível.

OBJECTIVE: it was aimed to evaluate the effect of retraction of anterior teeth on the point A sagittally and vertically, as well as the correlation and the predictability of the behavior of these structures. METHODS: sixty lateral cephalograms were used, which were taken at the beginning and at the end of fixed appliance orthodontic treatment, from thirty patients (22 female and 8 male) aging from 10 to 17 years at baseline, with Class II, Division 1 or Class I malocclusion, who underwent four first premolars extractions or maxillary first premolars extractions only. Besides the variables 1.NA, 1-NA, U1/PP and U1<FONT FACE=Symbol>«</FONT>AVERT, horizontal and vertical linear measurements were made in relation to a horizontal reference line constructed from the S-N plane minus 7º and its perpendicular. As distributed normally, all the data were measured twice, and the mean values were submitted to paired t test, linear correlation and regression tests. RESULTS: in average, point A retracted 0.71mm and moved 2.38mm downwardly, following 1.03mm of root apex and 4.13mm of incisal edge retraction, and 2.35mm of tooth extrusion. The retraction of point A was positively correlated with root apex (r = 0.75; p < 0.0001) and with incisal edge retraction (r = 0.70; p < 0.0001), showing a predictable sagittal behavior. CONCLUSIONS: it was concluded that point A retracted and moved downwardly following the tooth, and the retraction of point A in relation to the incisors was predictable.

OBJETIVO: identificar a prevalência e os tipos de má oclusão encontrados em crianças dentro da faixa etária de 2 a 4 anos; e correlacionar a presença de más oclusões com a forma de aleitamento e com os hábitos bucais infantis. METODOLOGIA: foram avaliadas por meio de exame clínico 226 crianças de 2 a 4 anos, sendo 100 delas inseridas no programa de prevenção do Centro de Pesquisa e Atendimento a Pacientes Especiais (Cepae) - FOP UNICAMP, e 126 pertencentes a creches municipais da cidade de Piracicaba. Foi também aplicado um questionário dirigido aos responsáveis a respeito dos hábitos infantis e formas de aleitamento, sendo os dados submetidos à análise estatística de Fischer (p < 0,05). RESULTADOS E CONCLUSÕES: observou-se alta prevalência de más oclusões (superior a 50% da amostra avaliada) e verificou-se uma correlação positiva entre a falta de amamentação natural e hábitos bucais inadequados em relação à presença de más oclusões na amostra analisada. A chupeta revelou-se a variável mais significativa na contribuição para a instalação de más oclusões.

OBJECTIVE: to identify the prevalence and the different types of malocclusions in children, with ages from 2 to 4 years, correlationing this findings with the feeding methods and oral habits. METHODOLOGY: 226 children ware evaluated through the clinical oral examination; being 100 children that were participating in the early dental caries prevention program of the Research and Dental Treatment Center for Special Pacients (Cepae) of the State University of Campinas Dental School, 126 children belonged to the City Hall day-care services of Piracicaba. A questionnaire was applied to children’s parents in relation to feeding methods and oral habits. The data was submitting to Fischer’s statistical analyses (p < 0.05) . RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: it was find high prevalence of malocclusions (plus than 50% of the analyzed sample), positives correlations between the absence of breast feeding, the presence of deleterious oral habits, when compared with the presence of malocclusions in the analyzed sample. The suction oral habit was the most important variable in the contribution to malocclusion’s installation.

OBJETIVO: o presente trabalho tem o propósito de apresentar uma revisão da literatura acerca do tratamento da má oclusão de Classe II, divisão 1 de Angle, tendo a protrusão maxilar como o principal componente dessa má oclusão, durante a fase de crescimento e desenvolvimento craniofacial. Serão apresentadas as características de cada um desses aparelhos, os seus componentes, a forma adequada de utilização, os seus mecanismos de ação e, principalmente, os seus efeitos em todo o complexo dentofacial. CONCLUSÃO: nos casos em que se verifica apenas a protrusão maxilar, sem envolvimento mandibular, e se faz necessário o controle vertical, pode ser indicado o AEB, conjugado ao aparelho removível derivado do aparelho preconizado por Thurow. Já nas situações de combinação da protrusão maxilar com a retrusão mandibular, uma opção de tratamento é o ativador combinado à ancoragem extrabucal.

AIM: The purpose of this research is to review the literature about the treatment of Class II, division 1 malocclusion with maxillary protrusion, during the growth and development period. This review addresses the characteristics of these appliances, their components, correct use, action mechanisms, and mainly their consequences in dentofacial complex. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with maxillary protrusion and with no mandibular component, it may be indicated the use of a maxillary splint similar to the one suggested by Thurow. However, in patients with maxillary protrusion and mandibular retrusion, it may be indicated an activator associated with extra oral anchorage.

OBJETIVO: avaliar as queixas relatadas por pacientes portadores de deformidades dentofaciais como fatores motivadores na procura do tratamento ortodôntico-cirúrgico. METODOLOGIA: foram verificados 130 prontuários de pacientes em tratamento no CEDEFACE - Araraquara, apresentando um período pós-operatório mínimo de 6 meses e idade média de 30,9 anos. A classificação dos tipos de deformidades foi realizada por meio de análise das telerradiografias e das fotografias, sendo subdivididas em três grupos, de acordo com suas características de perfil facial. As informações referentes às queixas foram colhidas por meio de questionários e divididas em duas categorias: queixa principal e queixas secundárias. Em relação à análise estatística, utilizaram-se medidas de tendência central (média e mediana) e de variabilidade (variação e desvio-padrão) para descrever as variáveis numéricas de idade. As variáveis categóricas de gênero, deformidades dentofaciais e queixas foram descritas através da distribuição de freqüências, com nível de significância de 5%. RESULTADOS: observou-se predominância do gênero feminino, na razão de 2:1. Na maioria das vezes, a deformidade requeria tratamento somente na maxila ou somente na mandíbula. No gênero feminino predominaram as deformidades de perfil convexo (46%); no gênero masculino houve predominância de deformidades de perfil côncavo (48,8%). As queixas principais evidenciaram que o anseio estético é predominante, tanto no gênero feminino quanto no masculino. CONCLUSÃO: os anseios de melhora estética foram predominantes em ambos os gêneros. A maioria dos pacientes também apresentou anseio por melhora funcional. Queixas de dor orofacial foram observadas em metade da casuística, sendo a segunda queixa mais relatada.

AIM: To assess the complaints referred by patients with dentofacial deformities as motivation for seeking orthodontic-surgical treatment. METHODS: Were examinated 130 handbook of patients submited to surgical-orthodonthic treatment in CEDEFACE - Araraquara, with a post surgical period of 6 months and middle age of 30.9 years old. The deformities types' classification was done by telerradiography and photography analysis, subdivided in 3 groups according to its facial profiles carachteristics. The informations relative to complaints were obtained by questionnaire and subdivided in two categories: principal complaints and secundary complaints. To statistical analysis, central tendency measures were used and the variability measures to describe the numeric variables of age. The categoric variables of genders, dentofacial deformities and complaints were described by frequency distribution, with significance level of 5%. RESULTS: There was a predominance of females, in 2:1 proportion, and in the majority of the cases the deformities needed treatment only in the mandible or only in the maxilla. The convex profile was predominant in females (46%) and the concave profile was most frequent in males (48.8%). The principal complaints shows that the esthetical desire was predominant in males and females. CONCLUSION: The desire of esthetical improvement was predominant in both genders, and the majority of the sample showed additional desire to functional improvement. Orofacial pain was the second more related complaint, observed in half of the sample.

OBJETIVO: o presente estudo, de caráter prospectivo, objetivou avaliar a imagem da sutura palatina mediana em crianças submetidas à expansão rápida da maxila por meio de tomografia computadorizada, após a fase de contenção. METODOLOGIA: a amostra constou de 17 crianças de ambos os gêneros, na faixa etária compreendida entre 5 anos e 2 meses e 10 anos e 5 meses no início do tratamento, provenientes da Clínica de Ortodontia Interceptiva da Sociedade de Promoção Social do Fissurado Lábio-Palatal da Universidade de São Paulo (PROFIS-USP), Bauru/SP. Tomografias computadorizadas foram implementadas para avaliar o comportamento da sutura palatina mediana em diferentes momentos do tratamento. RESULTADOS E CONCLUSÕES: constatou-se que, após um período médio de 8 a 9 meses de contenção com o aparelho expansor, a sutura palatina mediana mostrou-se completamente ossificada, desde a região da espinha nasal anterior até a espinha nasal posterior. Tal informação esclarece o comportamento da sutura palatina mediana frente à expansão rápida da maxila e reitera o senso comum quanto ao caráter biológico do procedimento.

AIM: The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the midpalatal suture in children submitted to rapid palatal expansion with computerized tomography. METHODS: The sample was comprised of 17 children aged between 5 years and 2 months and 10 years and 5 months, that were submited to rapid palatal expansion. The radiologic aspect of the sutures were evaluated through computerized tomography. RESULS AND CONCLUSIONS: The tomographic images showed that, after the retention phase (8 to 9 months post-expansion), the midpalatal suture was completely ossified from the anterior to the posterior nasal spine region.

OBJETIVO: o presente estudo avaliou a hipótese de variação das características cefalométricas de acordo com o gênero para portadores de Padrão Face Longa. METODOLOGIA: foi analisado um total de 73 telerradiografias em norma lateral, sendo 34 Padrão Face Longa e 39 Padrão I (grupo controle), selecionadas com base na morfologia facial, sem considerar as relações oclusais. Foram avaliados: padrão de crescimento facial, alturas faciais anteriores e posterior, relação maxilomandibular, além das relações dentárias com suas bases apicais. RESULTADOS: o grupo controle (Padrão I) apresentou dimorfismo (p<0,001) no comprimento efetivo da maxila e da mandíbula, além das alturas faciais avaliadas. Foram significantes também (p<0,05) as proporções entre as alturas faciais e as distâncias entre os incisivos e molares em relação aos planos palatino e mandibular. Para os portadores de Padrão Face Longa, as mesmas variáveis cefalométricas não mostraram diferenças significantes entre os gêneros (p>0,05), exceto os comprimentos efetivos da maxila e da mandíbula, além da altura facial anterior inferior e posterior (p<0,05). CONCLUSÕES: concluiu-se que enquanto ocorreu dimorfismo nos indivíduos Padrão I, para as estruturas influenciadas pela diferença no tamanho esquelético entre os gêneros, isso não aconteceu nos portadores de Padrão Face Longa. Essa maior similaridade entre os gêneros provavelmente ocorreu porque a deformidade, mais grave no gênero feminino, foi suficiente para anular o menor tamanho esquelético esperado para estes indivíduos.

AIM: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the presence of different cephalometric characteristics between genders with Long Face Pattern. METHODS: a total of 73 lateral cephalometric radiographs were evaluated, with 34 Long Face Pattern and 39 Class I Pattern (control) subjects, sampled with basis on the facial morphology, regardless the sagital occlusal relationships. Facial growth pattern, anterior and posterior facial heights, inter-jaw relationship and dentoskeletal relationship were evaluated. RESULTS: It was observed sexual dimorphism in Class I Pattern subjects (p<0.001) in the effective length of maxilla and mandible, as well as the facial heights. Also, significant differences were observed among facial height ratios and the distances from incisors and molars to palatal and mandibular plane. For Long Face Pattern subjects, these cephalometric variables showed no sexual dimorphism (p>0.05), except the effective length of maxilla and mandible, lower anterior and posterior facial heights (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: It was concluded that sexual dimorphism was evident in Class I Pattern subjects due to the skeletal size differences. However, in Long Face Pattern subjects, similarity was observed between genders, showing that the skeletal deformity was more severe in female subjects, enough to achieve skeletal size comparable to those of male subjects.
