Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the contribution of oral and maxillofacial pathology laboratories (OMPLs) in Brazilian public universities to the diagnosis of lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). A cross-sectional study was performed using biopsy records from a consortium of sixteen public OMPLs from all regions of Brazil (North, Northeast, Central-West, Southeast, and South). Clinical and demographic data of patients diagnosed with lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCC between 2010 and 2019 were collected from the patients’ histopathological records. Of the 120,010 oral and maxillofacial biopsies (2010-2019), 6.9% (8,321 cases) were diagnosed as lip (0.8%, 951 cases), oral cavity (4.9%, 5,971 cases), and oropharyngeal (1.2%, 1,399 cases) SCCs. Most cases were from Brazil’s Southeast (64.5%), where six of the OMPLs analyzed are located. The predominant profile of patients with lip and oral cavity SCC was Caucasian men, with a mean age over 60 years, low schooling level, and a previous history of heavy tobacco consumption. In the oropharyngeal group, the majority were non-Caucasian men, with a mean age under 60 years, had a low education level, and were former/current tobacco and alcohol users. According to data from the Brazilian National Cancer Institute, approximately 9.9% of the total lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCCs reported over the last decade in Brazil may have been diagnosed at the OMPLs included in the current study. Therefore, this data confirms the contribution of public OMPLs with respect to the important diagnostic support they provide to the oral healthcare services extended by the Brazilian Public Health System.

Abstract Objective To assess and compare socioeconomic factors, lifestyle habits, and the health of older women with and without sexual experience. Method A quantitative, analytical, observational, and cross-sectional population-based study was conducted. Participants were divided into two groups: the CVS group (with sexual experience) and the SVS group (without sexual experience), based on the question: "Do you have an active sexual life?". Socioeconomic variables, sleep patterns, comorbidities, and the level of physical activity were analyzed using a question from the SRQ-20, a list based on the Work Ability Index, and the long version of the IPAQ, respectively. Descriptive analysis was performed using absolute frequencies and percentages. Mann-Whitney U test, chi-square test, and multiple linear regression were used with a significance level set at p<0.05. Results The total sample consisted of 494 older women, with 100 of them in the CVS group. Having a stable partner (p<0.0001), a younger age (p<0.0001), higher family income (p<0.0001), duration of vigorous physical activity (p=0.005), and walking (p<0.0001) were significant and positive factors for continued sexual experience in the analyzed sample. Conclusion The study identified significant differences when comparing the groups, highlighting the influence of socioeconomic and health factors on the expression of sexuality in older women, thus emphasizing the challenges they face. Public policies and health education initiatives are necessary to safeguard rights, dignity, and promote positive changes in the lives of this population.

Resumo Objetivo avaliar e comparar fatores socioeconômicos, hábitos de vida e saúde de mulheres idosas com e sem vivência sexual. Método Pesquisa quantitativa, analítica, observacional e transversal de base populacional. As participantes foram divididas em dois grupos: grupo CVS - com vivência sexual e grupo SVS - sem vivência sexual, por meio da pergunta: “Você tem vida sexual ativa?”. Foram analisadas variáveis socioeconômicas, sono, comorbidades e nível de atividade física através de uma questão do SRQ-20, uma lista baseada no Índice de Capacidade para o Trabalho e o IPAQ versão longa, respectivamente. A análise descritiva foi realizada com uso de frequências absolutas e percentuais. O teste U de Mann Whitney, teste qui-quadrado e regressão linear múltipla consideraram nível de significância de p<0,05. Resultados a amostra totalizou 494 idosas, 100 delas do grupo CVS. Ter um companheiro fixo (p<0,0001), idade menos avançada (p<0,0001), renda familiar mais alta (p<0,0001), tempo de atividade física vigorosa (p=0,005) e caminhada (p<0,0001) foram fatores significativos e positivos quanto a continuidade da vivência sexual na amostra analisada. Conclusão O estudo identificou diferenças significativas quando comparados os grupos demonstrando a influência dos fatores socioeconômicos e de saúde na expressão da sexualidade de mulheres idosas, destacando os desafios enfrentados. Políticas públicas e ações de educação em saúde são necessárias para garantir direitos, dignidade e promover mudanças positivas na vida dessa população.

Mass spectrometry (MS) is a high-performance analytical technique that allows a measurement of the mass/charge (m/z) ratio of compounds present in a sample. MS is able to separate two m/z ions with determined values (mass resolution), being an important characteristic, especially in the analysis of biochemical components and complex mixtures. Mass analyzers define the resolving power and accuracy of different types of mass spectrometers. Herein, the performance of two mass analyzers (Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotronic Resonance (FT-ICR) and quadrupole ion trap (LTQ)) was tested on low (Mw = 165-679 Da) and high (Mw = 783-8.58 kDa) molecular weight molecules (Phenacetin, Procaine, Benzocaine, Caffeine anhydrous, Lidocaine, two metal porphyrin standards, the first cobalt and the second vanadium, and two protein standards, Ubiquitin and Beauvericin), and finally, for an oil sample. LTQ-MS and FT-ICR-MS had similar performance and high reproducibility. However, the mass accuracy and resolution power of the FT-ICR (error lower than 5 ppm and RP higher than 400,000) was higher, being therefore, it was more suitable for the analysis of proteins and oil, for instance. On the other hand, the CID analysis via LTQ demonstrated its applicability in fragmentation experiments, being able to determinate the chemical connectivity of organic compounds in non-complex mixtures.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Carriers of oncohematological diseases are at high risk for hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Objective and method: To investigate the epidemiology of HBV infection in Goiânia, Central Brazil, 322 individuals with oncohematological diseases (leukemias, Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma) were interviewed and blood samples were collected for the detection of serological markers of HBV-DNA by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Medical records of participants were also reviewed. Results: Non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (n = 99) and chronic myeloid leukemia (n = 108) were the most frequent oncohematological diseases. The overall prevalence of HBV was 13.97% (45/322). Of the total participants, 8.69% (28/322) presented isolated positivity for anti-HBs, suggesting low vaccine coverage. HBV-DNA was detected in 25% (1/4) of HBsAg positive samples and in 25% (3/12) of anti-HBc isolated, suggesting HBV occult infection. All samples were identified as subgenotype A1. Entries in patient records and the findings of this investigation suggest anti-HBc seroconversion during oncologic treatment. Age 50 years or over and use of a central catheter during therapy were associated with HBV exposure. Conclusion: The low frequency of hepatitis B immunized individuals, detection of HBV DNA in HBsAg negative samples, and the suggestion of HBV exposure during treatment evidenced the potential for health-related viral dissemination in people with oncohematological diseases in our region, reinforcing the importance of serological monitoring, vaccination against hepatitis B, and adoption of strict infection control measures in these individuals.

Abstract Scorpion venoms are natural sources of molecules that have, in addition to their toxic function, potential therapeutic applications. In this source the neurotoxins can be found especially those that act on potassium channels. Potassium channels are responsible for maintaining the membrane potential in the excitable cells, especially the voltage-dependent potassium channels (Kv), including Kv1.3 channels. These channels (Kv1.3) are expressed by various types of tissues and cells, being part of several physiological processes. However, the major studies of Kv1.3 are performed on T cells due its importance on autoimmune diseases. Scorpion toxins capable of acting on potassium channels (KTx), mainly on Kv1.3 channels, have gained a prominent role for their possible ability to control inflammatory autoimmune diseases. Some of these toxins have already left bench trials and are being evaluated in clinical trials, presenting great therapeutic potential. Thus, scorpion toxins are important natural molecules that should not be overlooked in the treatment of autoimmune and other diseases.

Resumo A efetivação do direito à saúde de adolescentes e jovens privados de liberdade no Brasil é tarefa complexa que nos coloca frente às iniquidades em saúde e às intervenções sobre seus determinantes sociais. Sendo assim, o presente estudo buscou contribuir com a discussão sobre o direito à saúde dessa população, a partir da análise da implementação da Política de Atenção Integral à Saúde de Adolescentes em Conflito com a Lei (PNAISARI). Trata-se de um estudo de abordagem analítica, utilizando análise documental dos marcos normativos e de dados de monitoramento e avaliação da política. Em suma, os resultados sugerem que a política fortalece a efetivação do direito a saúde dessa população. Entretanto, sua implementação necessita ser fomentada e qualificada para que o acesso aos cuidados em saúde seja de fato uma realidade em todos os estados e municípios.

Abstract The realization of the right to health of adolescents and young people deprived of their liberty in Brazil is a complex task that places us before health inequities and interventions on their social determinants of health. Therefore, this study sought to contribute to a discussion about the right to health of this population, based on the analysis of the implementation of the Comprehensive Healthcare Policy for Adolescent Offenders (PNAISARI). This is an analytical approach, using documentary analysis of legal frameworks and policy monitoring and evaluation data. In short, the results suggest that the policy strengthens the realization of the right to health of this population. However, its implementation must be promoted and qualified so that access to health care is, in fact, a reality in all states and municipalities.

RESUMO Este estudo teve por objetivo avaliar a qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde (QVRS) de pacientes com transtornos alimentares (TAs). A amostra foi composta por 40 pacientes consecutivos, em sua maioria mulheres jovens e adultas, com diagnóstico de Anorexia Nervosa e em tratamento ambulatorial. A coleta de dados foi realizada por meio da aplicação de um instrumento de QVRS (SF-36) e do Teste de Atitudes Alimentares (EAT-26). Os resultados evidenciaram QVRS rebaixada, especialmente nos Componentes Mentais. Constatou-se prejuízo em seis dos oito domínios de QV avaliados naqueles pacientes com maior pontuação no EAT-26, em cinco domínios nos pacientes com idade acima de 22 anos, nos domínios Estado Geral de Saúde (p = 0,02) e Saúde Mental (p = 0,03) naqueles pacientes com menos de cinco anos de tratamento e no domínio Aspectos Físicos (p = 0,02) naqueles que receberam diagnóstico de Bulimia Nervosa.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients with eating disorders (ED). The sample consisted of 40 predominantly young and adult female patients diagnosed with anorexia in outpatient treatment. A HRQoL instrument (SF-36) and the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26) were used. Results showed lowered HRQoL, especially in Mental Components. Impairments were observed in six of the eight domains evaluated regarding HRQoL of patients with higher scores on EAT-26, in five domains in patients with 22 years old or more, in General Health Perceptions (p = 0.02) and Mental Health domain (p = 0.03) in patients with less than five years of treatment and in Physical Functioning domain (p = 0.02) of patients with Bulimia Nervosa.

RESUMO De acordo com vários estudos epidemiológicos, há aumento significativo de casos de doença inflamatória nos países em desenvolvimento. Objetivo: Descrever os dados epidemiológicos e características clinicas dos pacientes com doença inflamatória intestinal em Campo Grande - MS. Método: Pesquisa descritiva retrospectiva, com análise dos prontuários em banco de dados, em pacientes que cadastraram e renovaram o processo no Programa de Medicamentos Excepcionais da Secretaria de Saúde, de janeiro de 2008 e dezembro de 2016. Resultados: Participaram da pesquisa 423 pacientes, 260 mulheres e 163 homens. Deste total, 238 possuíam doença de Crohn e 185 Retocolite Ulcerativa. A média de idade foi de 46 anos. O medicamento mais utilizado em ambas doenças foi a mesalazina e 34,3% dos pacientes necessitaram realizar troca de medicamentos ao longo do tratamento, sendo a maioria portador da doença de Crohn. Nos pacientes com Crohn o segmento mais acometido foi o cólon (40,6%) e nos pacientes com RCU foi todo o intestino grosso (78,8%). Do total de pacientes, 10,8% das mulheres e 18,4% dos homens necessitaram utilizar anti-TNF. Conclusão: A maioria das pessoas em tratamento para DII são do sexo feminino, com média de idade de 46 anos e portadores de Doença de Crohn. Os segmentos mais acometidos na RCU foi todo o intestino grosso e na Doença de Crohn o colo. A mesalazina foi o medicamento mais utilizado em ambas as doenças. Houve mais troca de medicamentos na Doença de Crohn. Na Doença de Crohn pessoas mais jovens utilizaram mais o infliximabe.

ABSTRACT According to several epidemiological studies, there is a significant increase in cases of inflammatory disease in developing countries. Objective: To describe epidemiological data and clinical features of patients with inflammatory bowel disease in patients enrolled in Campo Grande, MS. Method: A retrospective descriptive study with a database analysis of patients who were enrolled and renewed their process in the Exceptional Medications Program of the Health Department from January 2008 to December 2016. Results: 423 patients participated in the study, 260 women and 163 men. Of these, 238 patients had Crohn's disease and 185 had ulcerative rectocolitis. The patients’ mean age was 46 years. The most commonly used medication for both diseases was mesalazine and 34.3% of the patients needed to switch their medication during the treatment, most of them with Crohn's disease. In Crohn's patients, the most affected segment was the colon (40.6%) and in patients with ulcerative rectocolitis the entire large intestine was involved (78.8%) was more common. Of the total number of patients, 10.8% of the women and 18.4% of the men needed to use an anti-TNF. Conclusion: Most people on treatment for IBD are female, with a mean age of 46 years and suffering from Crohn's disease. The most affected segments were the entire large intestine in URC cases and the colon in Crohn's disease cases. Mesalazine was the most used drug in both diseases. There was more drug replacement in Crohn's disease patients. In Crohn's disease, younger patients used infliximab more frequently.

Abstract Shrimp shells are a raw material rich in chitin, a precursor of chitosan biopolymer. The variables of processing (demineralization, deproteination and deacetylation) can be manipulated to determine the main characteristics of chitosan, the degree of deacetylation (DD), and average molar mass. This study evaluated the influence of one of the unit operations of shrimp shell physical processing, the milling, on the final product characteristic, chitosan. After different milling conditions, the raw material was subjected to standard chemical processing for chitin extraction, followed by deacetylation to obtain chitosan, which is characterized by 1H NMR, SEM, XRD, N2 physisorption (BET) and viscometry. The results indicated that the milling time of the raw material can be manipulated to increase the material depolymerization, significantly influencing the molecular weight reduction of chitosan a desirable feature for many applications of this biopolymer, and usually obtained by complex chemical and enzymatic methods.

Nano-size structures, nanotubes/multi-layer graphene (CNT/MLG), were dispersed into epoxy system by a combination of sonication and high shear mixing. To avoid CNT/MLG agglomeration, a non-covalent functionalization were performed using surfactants, CO890 - Polyoxyethylene (40) nonylphenyl ether and SDBS - sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate. Raman spectroscopy and Fourier transformed Infra-red analysis indicated that CO890-MLG and SDBS-CNT have strong chemical interactions. Atomic force microscopy revealed formation of "spike-like" nanostructures for SDBS-CNT combination and "wall-like" nano-shape structures for the CO890-MLG ones. Tensile tests data indicate no significant change on stiffness. In average, the ultimate stress increased around 18%, while toughness had an improvement close to 62%. SDBS-CNT and CO890-MLG at small concentrations (0.075 wt. %) are probably the best options for nano-reinforcement of carbon/epoxy composites.

Objectives to describe the activities developed by nursing professors and to analyze their perception of work activities, considering situations that cause pleasure and suffering. Method a qualitative, descriptive, and exploratory study was performed. The place of collection was the school of nursing of a public university in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Southeast of Brazil. Participants were 16 nursing professors. Data were collected with the application of a semi-structured interview and treated with content analysis. Results professors developed a series of activities that create feelings of pleasure, while causing suffering as well. Conclusions pleasure and suffering are found in the routine of professors. In addition, suffering refers to questions associated with neoliberal concepts, which have been the foundation of work development in public education services.

Objetivos describir las actividades desarrolladas por los docentes de enfermería y analizar la percepción de esos profesionales sobre sus actividades en el trabajo, considerando las situaciones generadoras de placer y de sufrimiento. Método investigación con enfoque cualitativo, descriptivo y exploratorio. El escenario de la recolecta fue una facultad de enfermería perteneciente a una universidad pública del municipio de Rio de Janeiro. Los participantes fueron 16 docentes de enfermería. Los datos fueron recolectados mediante entrevista semiestructurada y tratados a través del análisis de contenido. Resultados se constató que el docente desarrolla una variedad de actividades que lo conducen a una sensación de placer y, también, lo remiten al sufrimiento. Conclusión el placer y el sufrimiento están presentes en el cotidiano docente, siendo el sufrimiento referido a cuestiones relacionadas a los preceptos neoliberales, que vienen orientando el desarrollo del trabajo en los servicios de enseñanza pública.

Método pesquisa qualitativa, descritiva e exploratória. O cenário de coleta foi uma faculdade de enfermagem pertencente a uma universidade pública do município do Rio de Janeiro. Os participantes foram 16 docentes de enfermagem. Os dados foram coletados mediante aplicação de entrevista semiestruturada e tratados por meio da análise de conteúdo. Resultados evidenciou-se que o docente desenvolve uma diversidade de atividades que permitem a sensação de prazer e também remetem ao sofrimento. Conclusão o prazer e o sofrimento estão presentes no cotidiano docente, sendo o sofrimento referido a questões atreladas aos preceitos neoliberais, que vêm fundamentando o desenvolvimento do trabalho nos serviços de ensino público.

Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar o estilo motivacional e o comportamento (assertivo, inassertivo e agressivo) de professores de Educação Física de uma cidade do noroeste do Paraná, ao longo da carreira docente (n = 49). Como instrumentos de pesquisa foram utilizados o questionário Problemas na Escola, o Inventário de Assertividade e os dados demográficos. Os dados foram analisados a partir da estatística inferencial: Shapiro-Wilk, Alpha de Cronbach, Anova de Medidas Repetidas e Correlação de Spearman (p ≤ 0,05). O estilo motivacional com mediana superior foi o estilo altamente promotor de autonomia (Md = 5,88) e o com mediana inferior foi o estilo altamente controlador (Md = 2,88), com diferenças estatisticamente significativas. Os resultados demonstraram correlações positivas entre as variáveis: inassertividade e estilo altamente controlador (ρ = 0,63); agressividade e estilo altamente controlador (ρ = 0,69); e a inassertividade e agressividade (ρ = 0,82) dos professores que atuam com carga horária de até 20 horas semanais. Conclui-se que os professores de Educação Física apresentaram um estilo motivacional mais promotor de autonomia e que ocorreu relação entre o estilo motivacional e o comportamento assertivo, inassertivo e agressivo dos professores, considerando o tempo de experiência e a carga horária semanal inferior.

Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the motivational style and behavior (assertive, nonassertive and aggressive) in Physical Education teachers from a northwestern Paraná city over their teaching career (n = 49). The Problems in Schools questionnaire, the Assertiveness Inventory and demographic data were employed as research instruments. Data were analyzed through the following inferential statistics: Shapiro-Wilk, Cronbach’s Alpha, repeated measures Anova and Spearman Correlation (p ≤ 0.05). The motivational style with the higher median was the highly autonomy promoting style (5.88) and the lower was the highly controller style (2.88), with statistically significant differences. Results showed positive correlations between the variables: nonassertiveness and the highly controller style (ρ = 0.63); aggressiveness and the highly controller style (ρ = 0.69); and nonassertiveness and aggressiveness (ρ = 0.82) for teachers with workload under 20 hours a week. We conclude Physical Education teachers showed autonomy promoting motivational styles and motivational style and assertive, nonassertive and aggressive behavior were related for less experienced and lower workload teachers.

Abstract Background In the Atlantic forest of the North and Northeast regions of Brazil, local population often uses the fruit juice and the aqueous extract of leaves of soursop (Annona muricata L.) to treat Lachesis muta rhombeata envenomation. Envenomation is a relevant health issue in these areas, especially due to its severity and because the production and distribution of antivenom is limited in these regions. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relevance of the use of soursop leaf extract and its juice against envenomation by Lachesis muta rhombeata. Methods We evaluated the biochemical, hematological and hemostatic parameters, the blood pressure, the inflammation process and the lethality induced by Lachesis muta rhombeata snake venom. We also assessed the action of the aqueous extract of leaves (AmL) and juice (AmJ) from A. muricata on the animal organism injected with L. m. rhombeata venom (LmrV) in the laboratory environment. Results LmrV induced a decrease of total protein, albumin and glucose; and increase of creatine kinase, aspartate aminotransferase, and urea concentrations. It provoked hemoconcentration followed by reduction of hematocrit, an increase in prothrombin time and partial thromboplastin time and a decrease of the blood pressure. LmrV induced the release of interleukin-6, an increase in neutrophils and changes in the serum protein profile, characteristic of the acute inflammatory process. LD50 values were similar for the groups injected with LmrV and treated or untreated with AmJ and AmL. Both treatments play a role on the maintenance of blood glucose, urea and coagulation parameters and exert a protective action against the myotoxicity. However, they seem to worsen the hypotension caused by LmrV. Conclusion The treatments with AmJ and AmL present some beneficial actions, but they might intensify some effects of the venom. Therefore, additional studies on A. muricata are necessary to enable its use as natural antivenom for bushmaster snakebite.

A frequência de dermatoses é alta, apresentando grande impacto na qualidade de vida dos pacientes. Contudo, há poucas políticas públicas nesta área de saúde, e o tempo destinado ao ensino dermatológico na graduação médica é restrito. Objetivos Definir as hipóteses diagnósticas e as condutas mais frequentes adotadas nas consultas realizadas em uma Unidade Básica de Saúde (UBS). Métodos Foram utilizados cadernos de registro de atendimento da UBS para análise de variantes como idade, sexo, diagnóstico, conduta e encaminhamento dos pacientes. Os dados foram analisados estatisticamente pelo programa SPSS 15.0. Resultados As hipóteses diagnósticas mais frequentes foram: eczemas, tumores benignos, transtornos pigmentares, onicopatias, infecções fúngicas, bacterianas e virais, lesões acneiformes foliculares e eritematodescamativas. Conclusão As hipóteses diagnósticas mais frequentes nas consultas de um médico generalista diferem daquelas feitas pelo especialista. Os resultados deste estudo deverão promover uma discussão sobre o ensino da Dermatologia nos cursos de Medicina.

The frequency of skin disorders is high and they have a considerable impact on patients’ quality of life. However, there are very few public policies for this area of public health and the time devoted to studying Dermatology at medical school is limited. Objectives to define the most common diagnostic hypotheses and procedures in consultations performed at a primary health care unit. Methods medical notebooks entries were used in order to analyze variables such as age, gender, diagnosis, patient conduct and referral. Statistical analysis was performed using the program SPSS 15.0. Results the most frequent diagnostic hypotheses were: eczema, benign tumors, pigment disorders, onychopathy, fungal infections, bacterial infections, viral infections, acneiform and erythemato-squamous conditions. Conclusion the most frequent hypotheses diagnosed by a general practitioner differ greatly from those diagnosed by specialists. The results of this study should promote further discussions on dermatology teaching in Medical courses.
