ABSTRACT A 7-week-old male delivered by cesarean section presented with a positive serology for dengue along with preretinal and retinal hemorrhages, vitreous opacities and cotton wool spots. The patient and his mother had positive serologies for Non Structural Protein 1 (NS1) by ELISA. Retinal and vitreous findings improved over a sixteen-week period. Spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) showed preserved macular architecture. In this case report, we suggest that retinal and vitreous changes may be the ocular presenting features of vertically transmitted dengue in newborns, and that those findings may resolve with no major structural sequelae.

RESUMO Neonato de 7 semanas, do sexo masculino, nascido de parto cesárea, apresentou sorologia positiva para dengue com hemorragias retinianas e pré-retinianas, opacidades vítreas e manchas algodonosas. O paciente e sua mãe haviam apresentado sorologias positivas para Non Structural Protein 1 através de ELISA. Achados na retina e no vítreo melhoraram em um período de dezesseis semanas. O exame de tomografia de coerência óptica de domínio espectral demonstrou arquitetura macular preservada. Neste relato de caso, sugerimos que alterações na retina e no vítreo podem ser os achados oculares aparentes em neonatos com infecção vertical por dengue, e que estes podem se resolver sem maiores sequelas estruturais.

Abstract Objective: To evaluate the conservative management of newborns born at ≥35 weeks of gestational age, at risk for early-onset neonatal sepsis (EOS). Methods: Retrospective, analytic cohort study (2016 to 2019), including newborns ≥35 weeks of gestational at risk of EOS, asymptomatic at birth, managed conservatively in full rooming-in: serial physical examination and clinical observation for at least 48 h. They were classified into three groups, according to the clinical course: asymptomatic (group A), symptomatic for other reasons (group B), and with sepsis (group C). Risk factors, clinical signs and differential diagnoses of sepsis, length of stay, and discharge conditions were evaluated. Results: The authors evaluated 769 asymptomatic newborns at risk of EOS. (mean birth weight 2999 ± 485 g and gestational age 37.6 ± 1.7 weeks, respectively) corresponding to 12.2% of rooming-in admissions. The most prevalent risk factors were colonization by Group B Streptococcus (29%), prolonged rupture membrane duration (21.9%) and preterm labor (21.4%). Most of all of them (53.9%) remained asymptomatic (group A). Group B corresponded for 45.3%, and the most common clinical signs were hypothermia (24.5%), tremors (8.7%) and vomiting (8%). Environmental dysthermia (50.7%), prematurity (20.0%), and feeding intolerance (15.7%) were common in Group B. Laboratory tests were performed in 3.5%. Five patients (one confirmed) comprised group C (0.8/1,000 live births). There were no deaths. The median length of stay was 64 h (IQR 50-93). Conclusion: The rate of clinical/confirmed EOS was low. Most of the symptomatic patients only needed clinical evaluation to rule out sepsis. Management was shown to be safe.

Resumen Esta revisión se centra en la técnica conocida por el nombre de cavitación para el tratamiento de aguas residuales. Existen diversas maneras de lograr que un fluido cavite; el centro de atención de este documento son la cavitación hidrodinámica y cavitación acústica. La cavitación ocurre cuando de manera brusca un fluido cambia de fase por variación en la presión de este; las cavidades cuentan con una considerable cantidad de energía que favorece reacciones en el interior e interfase de cada burbuja o cavidad que se forma en el seno del líquido, así como también en fluido. Esta técnica de tratamiento resulta favorable ya que no implica el uso o dosificación de insumos químicos para reducir la concentración de contaminantes en el agua. Las fuentes consultadas señalan que para lograr una mayor efectividad del proceso de cavitación se hace necesario la intensificación del proceso por la implementación simultánea de otras técnicas de tratamiento, entre ellas los procesos de oxidación avanzada, procesos electroquímicos y clarificación del agua. Las combinaciones de cavitación con otras técnicas de tratamiento de aguas residuales han sido objeto de estudio para diferentes contaminantes recalcitrantes logrando resultados muy favorables. Este trabajo hace énfasis principalmente en el estudio las aguas residuales de curtiembres.

Abstract This review focuses on the technique known by the name of cavitation for wastewater treatment. There are several ways to make a fluid cavitate; the focus of this document is hydrodynamic cavitation and acoustic cavitation. Cavitation occurs when a fluid abruptly changes phase due to a variation in its pressure: the cavities have a considerable amount of energy that favors reactions inside and at the interface of each bubble or cavity that forms within the liquid, as well as in the fluid. This treatment technique is favorable since does not imply the use or dosage of chemical inputs to reduce the concentration of contaminants in the water. The sources consulted indicate that to achieve greater effectiveness of the cavitation process, it is necessary to intensify the process by the simultaneous implementation of other treatment techniques, including advanced oxidation processes, electrochemical processes, and water clarification. The combinations of cavitation with other wastewater treatment techniques have been studied for different recalcitrant pollutants, achieving very favorable results. This work is mainly focused on wastewater from tanneries.

Three new triterpenes, 3,4-seco-3,11β-epoxyfriedel-4(23)-en-3β-ol (1), friedelan-3α,11β diol (2), 7β,26-epoxyfriedelan-3a,7a-diol (3), a mixture of two new triterpenes 3α-hydroxyfriedelan-29-yl palmitate (4) and 3α-hydroxyfriedelan-29-yl stearate (5) and eleven known compounds were obtained from the hexane extract of Maytenus quadrangulata leaves. The structures and the relative stereochemistry of the new triterpenes were established through 1D/2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectral data. The hexane extract and isolated compounds were submitted to the cytotoxicity assays against leukemia (THP-1 and K562), ovarian (TOV-21G) and breast cancer (MDA-MB-231) cell lines. Compounds 1, 2 and 11β-hydroxyfriedelan-3-one (15) displayed high cytotoxicity and selectivity against leukemic cells when compared to positive control cytarabine (for THP-1) and imatinib (for K562). Furthermore, compound 2 showed similar cytotoxicity and an enhanced selectivity towards ovarian and breast cells in comparison to positive control etoposide.

ABSTRACT Background: Depressive symptomatology in health professionals associated with viral crises is highly prevalent globally, being its detection a priority. Therefore, the objective of this research was to analyze the convergent validity and internal consistency of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-2) in healthcare professionals. Method: E-Health study where cross-sectional data was collected online (n = 725), from 281 general practitioners, 237 specialist doctors and 207 nurses during the Colombian quarantine, between April 20 and August 10, 2020. Average age 41.3 years (± 8.76). 38.4% were men (278) and 61.6% women (447). 66.1% of health personnel treated patients infected with coronavirus and 33.9% did not provide these services. The 9-item version of the PHQ was administered, validated in the Colombian population together with the 2-item version of the PHQ. Results: A high correlation was found between the scales (r = .860, P <0.001), demonstrating the convergent validity of the PHQ-2 to measure depressive symptomatology. The internal consistency of the PHQ-2 was adequate, with a Cronbach’s Alpha of 0.80 (I.C. = 0.76 - 0.83). Conclusions: The PHQ-2 has adequate psychometric standards of reliability and validity, so its rapid administration, easy qualification and interpretation, makes it a reliable and valid instrument for the rapid detection, without work overload, of depressive symptoms in doctors and nurses whether or not they care for patients with viral outbreaks.

RESUMEN: Introducción: La sintomatologia depresiva en profesionales de la salud asociado a crisis virales es de alta prevalencia a nivel global, siendo su detección una prioridad por lo cual, el objetivo de esta investigación fue analizar la validez convergente y consistencia interna del cuestionario de salud del paciente-2 (PHQ-2) en profesionales sanitarios. Método: Estudio eSalud donde se recopilaron datos transversales en línea (n=725), de 281 médicos generales, 237 médicos especialistas y 207 enfermeras durante la cuarentena colombiana, entre el 20 de abril y el 10 de agosto de 2020. Edad promedio 41,3 años (± 8,76). El 38,4% eran hombres (278) y el 61.6% mujeres (447). El 66.1% del personal sanitario atendió pacientes contagiados por coronavirus y el 33,9% no prestó estos servicios. Se administró la versión de 9 ítems del PHQ, validada en población colombiana junto a la versión de 2 ítems del PHQ. Resultados: Se encontró una alta correlación entre las escalas (r=.860, P<0.001), demostrando la validez convergente del PHQ-2 para medir la sintomatología depresiva. La consistencia interna del PHQ-2 fue adecuada, con un Alpha de Cronbach de 0.80 (I.C.= 0.76 - 0.83). Conclusiones: El PHQ-2 presenta adecuados estándares psicométricos de confiabilidad y validez, por lo que su rápida administración, fácil calificación e interpretación, lo convierte en un instrumento confiable y valido para la detección rápida, sin sobrecargas laborales, de los síntomas depresivos en médicos y enfermeras que atiendan o no pacientes en condiciones de brotes virales.

ABSTRACT A mathematical model was developed to describe the dynamics of the primary infection of dengue virus in infants who were born to a mother immune to some serotype of the dengue virus. The model is given by a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations with time-dependent variables for the number of dengue virus antibodies of the infant transferred from their immune, uninfected, and infected monocytes and dengue virus. The mathematical analysis was carried out where the conditions for the existence of the disease-free equilibrium and the endemic equilibrium were established. The numerical simulations were performed considering different scenarios for a basic reproductive number, R 0, illustrating the global convergence of the numerical results for the equilibrium points. The results are in agreement with our derived global stability analysis. It can be concluded that dengue hemorrhagic fever in infants could occur in the peaks observed for the infected monocytes and dengue virus.

Resumo A vitamina D desempenha um papel importante na função imunológica e na inflamação e a atividade física demonstra relação próxima à síntese de vitamina D, sendo necessária a fatores imunológicos, ambientais e físicos. Pesquisamos cinco bancos de dados até 20 de fevereiro de 2021. Dois revisores examinaram os estudos, coletaram dados, avaliaram o risco de viés e classificaram as evidências para cada resultado nos estudos, de forma independente e em duplicata. Os endpoints de interesse pré-especificados foram aptidão cardiorrespiratória; Exposição à luz solar; Índice de Massa Corporal (IMC). Incluímos apenas dados de artigos revisados por pares em nossas análises primárias. Em nossa análise primária, houve uma tendência positiva entre 25(OH)D sérico <20 ng/ml e índice de massa corporal., esse resultado deve ser interpretado com cautela, considerando os intervalos de confiança (RR 1,10 IC 95% 0,37 a 1,83. Identificamos 4 evidências de alta qualidade de que níveis de vitamina D e atividade física alta exigiam uma relação direta considerando (quatro ensaios com 2.253) ; RR 0 . (RR 0,0; IC 95% -0,15 a 0,15) (RR 0,59; IC 95% 0,43 a 0,75. Embora as evidências disponíveis até agora, de estudos observacionais de qualidade média, possam ser vistas como uma tendência de associação entre níveis séricos suficientes de 25(OH)D e atividade física, essa relação foi demonstrada. têm um efeito estimulante na síntese de vitamina D, a relação de baixo índice de massa corporal com níveis suficientes de vitamina D não é baseada em evidências sólidas. Aguardamos resultados de estudos em andamento para determinar essa eficácia.

Abstract Vitamin D plays an important role in immune function and inflammation and the physical activity demonstrate relationship near to syntheses of vitamin D, considering to necessary to factors immunologics, environmental and physical. We searched five databases through February 20, 2021. Two reviewers screened the studies, collected data, assessed the risk of bias, and ranked the evidence for each outcome across the studies, independently and in duplicate. The prespecified endpoints of interest were Cardiorespiratory Fitness; Sunlight Exposure; Body Mass Index (BMI). We only included data from peer-reviewed articles in our primary analyses. In our primary analysis, there was a positive trend between serum 25(OH)D <20 ng/ml and body mass index, this result should be interpreted with caution, considering confidence intervals (RR 1.10 95% CI 0.37 to 1.83. We identified 4 high quality evidence that vitamin D levels and high physical activity required a direct relationship considering (four trials with 2,253) ; RR 0. (RR 0.0; 95% CI -0.15 to 0.15) (RR 0.59; 95% CI 0.43 to 0.75. Although the evidence available so far, from observational studies of medium quality, can be seen as showing a trend towards an association between sufficient serum levels of 25(OH)D and physical activity, this relationship has been shown. have a stimulating effect on vitamin D synthesis, the relationship of low body mass index with sufficient vitamin D levels is not based on solid evidence. We await results from ongoing studies to determine this effectiveness.

Resumo Os manguezais se configuram em um dos ecossistemas mais produtivos do planeta, entretanto eles vêm sofrendo progressivas alterações ambientais, devido às pressões antrópicas. Informações sobre o comportamento fenológico podem ser utilizadas como instrumento na construção de projetos de conservação de recursos naturais. O presente estudo foi realizado em quatro áreas estuarinas em Acaraú, Ceará, objetivando analisar o comportamento fenológico dos componentes reprodutivos de três espécies de mangue em diferentes áreas sujeitas a diferentes tipos de impactos ambientais (resíduos sólidos, desmatamento e efluentes da carcinicultura) e uma área de baixo impacto no período de um ano. A fim de se caracterizar os padrões fenológicos foi realizada observação direta, registrando-se a presença e a intensidade da floração e frutificação. Dois métodos de análise foram aplicados para entender os padrões de floração e frutificação: percentual de intensidade de Fournier e o índice de atividade. As florações de Avicennia spp. e Rhizophora mangle L, em condições naturais, ocorrem o ano todo, e nas áreas impactadas mostraram padrões irregulares. Quanto à frutificação, Laguncularia racemosa (L.) C. F. Gaertn foi a espécie que apresentou os mais altos percentuais para os dois índices fenológicos analisados. A pluviosidade e a salinidade parecem exercer maior força seletiva quando as espécies estão sujeitas a algum tipo de impacto antrópico. A análise comparativa dos diferentes métodos de avaliação fenológicos realizados neste estudo indicou que estes fornecem dados distintos e complementares sobre o comportamento reprodutivo vegetal e de como os impactos a que estes ambientes estão sujeitos pode estar interferindo negativamente sobre a flora deste ecossistema.

Abstract Mangroves are one of the most productive ecosystems on the planet however they have undergone progressive environmental changes due to anthropic pressures. Information on phenological behavior can be used as an instrument in the construction of conservation projects of natural resources. The present study was carried out in four estuarine areas in Acaraú, Ceará, Brazil, with the aim of analyzing of phenological behavior regarding reproductive components of three mangrove species in different areas subject to different environmental impacts (solid waste, deforestation and shrimp farm effluent) and a low impacted area, during a period of one year. patterns of flowering and fruiting: Fournier Index (percentage of intensity) and the index of activity. The flowering of Avicennia spp. and Rhizophora mangle, under natural conditions, occurred all year round, and it showed irregular patterns. Regarding fruiting, Laguncularia racemosa was the species that presented the highest values for the two phenological indices analyzed. Rainfall and salinity seemed to exert a more selective force when species were subjected to an anthropic impact. The comparative analysis of the different phenological evaluation methods carried out in this study indicated that they provide different and complementary data about the reproductive behavior of the plant and how the impacts to which these environments are subjected may be negatively interfering with the flora of this ecosystem.

Resumen: Este artículo presenta un análisis de estabilidad de un modelo de ecuaciones diferenciales ordinarias para el tratamiento de cáncer usando virus oncológicos siendo consideradas las versiones clásica y fraccionaria. Usando diferentes valores para el orden de la derivada fraccionaria de Caputo, se presentan y discuten tres escenarios para tal tratamiento.

Abstract: This paper presents a stability analysis of a differential equations model related to the cancer treatment with an oncolytic virus in its classical and fractional version via Caputo derivatives. Numerical simulations of three possible scenarios are presented and support the discussions on the advantages of using fractional modeling.

Abstract Background: Osteopetrosis is a rare hereditary bone dysplasia characterized by insufficient osteoclast activity that results in increased bone mineral density. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) can reverse skeletal abnormalities and restore hematopoiesis. Case report: We present the case of a 3-year and 2-month-old male patient with the diagnosis of osteopetrosis. The patient underwent allogeneic HSCT (Allo-HSCT) using 100% compatible bone marrow from a related donor and received a myeloablative conditioning regimen and a CD34 cell dose (4.7 × 107/kg). In the early post-transplant, frequent complications such as pneumonitis, hypercalcemia, and hyperphosphatemia ocurred. With a suitable granulocytic graft and chimerism of 100%, it was considered a successful transplant. However, the patient showed a delayed platelet graft treated with a platelet-stimulating factor for 6 months. The patient is currently disease-free, outpatient follow-up, with no data on graft-versus-host disease, and no progressive neurological damage. Conclusions: Osteopetrosis is a childhood disease that requires clinical suspicion and early diagnosis. HSCT is necessary at an early age to prevent disease progression and sensorineural, hematological, and endocrinological functions damage that can lead to death.

Resumen Introducción: La osteopetrosis es una displasia ósea hereditaria poco común, caracterizada por una actividad osteoclástica deficiente que aumenta la densidad mineral ósea. Se considera que el trasplante de células progenitoras hematopoyéticas (TCPH) puede revertir las anormalidades esqueléticas y restaurar la hematopoyesis. Caso clínico: Se presenta el caso de un paciente de sexo masculino, de 3 años y 2 meses de edad, con diagnóstico tardío de osteopetrosis. Se realizó un TCPH alogénico de donador relacionado 100% compatible con médula ósea. Se utilizaron un régimen de acondicionamiento mieloablativo y una dosis celular de CD34 de 4.7 × 107/kg de peso. En el postrasplante temprano, el paciente desarrolló complicaciones como neumonitis, hipercalcemia e hiperfosfatemia. Con un injerto granulocítico adecuado y quimerismo del 100% se consideró un trasplante exitoso. Sin embargo, el paciente presentó retraso en el injerto plaquetario, por lo que se administró factor estimulante de plaquetas por 6 meses. Actualmente el paciente se encuentra libre de enfermedad, en seguimiento ambulatorio, sin datos de enfermedad del injerto contra el hospedero y con pruebas de neurodesarrollo sin deterioro neurológico progresivo. Conclusiones: La osteopetrosis es una enfermedad infantil que requiere una sospecha clínica y un diagnóstico temprano, ya que es necesario un TCPH a corta edad como tratamiento para evitar la progresión de la enfermedad y el deterioro de las funciones neurosensoriales, hematológicas y endocrinológicas que puede derivar en la defunción del paciente.

The solar-to-chemical energy conversion is promising to tackle sustainability challenges toward a global future. The production of H2 from sunlight represents an attractive alternative to the use of carboniferous fossil fuels to meet our energy demands. In this context, the water splitting reaction photocatalyzed by semiconductors that can be excited under visible or near-infrared light excitation represents an attractive route to the clean generation of H2. In this review, we present an overview of the most important concepts behind the H2 generation, from water splitting, promoted by semiconductor-based systems for readers that were recently introduced to the water splitting topic. Then, we present the main classes of photocatalysts based on semiconductors. For each class of semiconductors, we focused on the examples that lead to the highest activities towards the H2 production and discuss the operation principles, advantages, performances, limitations, and challenges. We cover metal oxides, sulfides, and nitrides. We also discuss strategies in which these materials are combined, including hybridization with metal nanoparticles, other semiconductors, and carbon dots, to achieve improved performances and circumvent the limitations of the individual counterparts.

Quando se estuda a qualidade física de meios porosos como o solo uma propriedade de bastante relevância é a sua densidade, ρs. As medidas de ρs são importantes devido à influência desta propriedade em outras deste sistema poroso (e.g., porosidade, umidade volumétrica, armazenamento de água, etc). Neste trabalho propõe-se uma metodologia alternativa para a medida de ρs, chamada de método da sela a vácuo. A impermeabilização da amostra, contrário aos métodos tradicionais como torrão parafinado, é feita utilizando embalagem plástica com posterior evacuação do ar interno usando bomba de vácuo. Medidas de ρs pelo método do torrão parafinado foram utilizadas como referência. Os resultados obtidos mostram que em relação ao método do torrão parafinado, ρs medido pelo método da sela a vácuo é, em média, subestimado para todos os diferentes tipos de solos analisados. O método proposto é mais rápido e apresenta maior confiabilidade na impermeabilização que o método tradicional, além disso, permite reutilizar a amostra para novas medidas. O novo método ainda pode ser facilmente implementado em laboratórios de ensino de física para o ensino médio e para o ensino superior nos cursos de bacharelado, engenharias e agronomia. Por se tratar de um método que envolve pouco manuseio, rápido e de fácil implementação, torna-se ideal para o estudo não somente de ρs, mas também de conceitos envolvidos em sua medida como massa, volume, massa específica, peso, peso aparente e empuxo.

When the physical quality of porous media such as soil is studied one of the properties of great importance is its bulk density, ρs. Measurements of ρs have great relevance due to its influence in other porous system properties (e.g. porosity, volumetric water content, water storage, etc.). In this paper is proposed an alternative methodology of ρs measurement named vacuum-sealed method. Samples coating, contrary to the traditional methods such as the paraffin-coated, was carried out using a plastic packaging followed by the sample internal air evacuation through a vacuum pump device. The determination of the clod samples ρs by the paraffin-coated method was utilized as a reference. The obtained results showed that compared to the paraffin-coated method, the average ρs measured by the vacuum-sealed method presented underestimated values considering all the soils analyzed. The proposed method is faster and has greater coating reliability than the traditional method with the additional advantage of sample reuse for new measurements. The new method can also be easily implemented in teaching physics laboratories in high school grade and bachelor’s, engineering, and environmental science courses. As a method that requires minimal sample preparation, easy to implement, and fast, it becomes ideal for the study not only of ρs but also to the discussion of concepts involved in its measurement such as mass, volume, weight, apparent weight and buoyancy force.

Resumo O gênero Passiflora, comumente conhecido como frutos da paixão, inclui numerosas espécies, entre as quais o gulupa (Passiflora edulis f. ), edulis cnhecido como maracujá-roxo, de importância nutracética e econômica, tanto para o consumo in natura quanto para a sua aplicabilidade agroindustrial. A presente investigação foi desenvolvida para avaliar os efeitos de vários tratamentos pré-germinativos na germinação de sementes de gulupa do município de Ramiriqui (Boyacá), tais como: exposição ao peróxido de hidrogênio (H2O2), hipoclorito de sódio (NaOCl), ácido giberélico (GA3), embebição em água destilada e estratificação a 4 °C, em concentrações e tempos de exposição variáveis (24 e 48 horas), em delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, com três repetições de 50 sementes cada. A análise estatística mostrou diferenças significativas entre os tratamentos, sendo o H2O2 a 15% o mais eficaz, com uma porcentagem de germinação (PG) de 88% nas sementes expostas por 48 horas. Na presença de hipoclorito de sódio, as porcentagens foram inferiores a 36-40%. O GA3 a 100 ppm, por 24 horas, registrou 51% de PG, em outras concentrações desse regulador de crescimento , e nos tempos de exposição esse valor foi menor. O uso de peróxido de hidrogênio não foi relatado como tratamento para induzir germinação no gênero Passiflora. Considerando os resultados obtidos nesta pesquisa, sua aplicação no tratamento de sementes, em espécies vegetais pode ser uma alternativa viável, eficaz, econômica e de fácil aplicação.

Abstract The genus Passiflora, commonly known as fruits of passion, includes numerous species, including gulupa (Passiflora edulis f. edulis), of nutracetic and economic importance, both for consumption in nature and for its agro-industrial applicability. This research was developed to evaluate the effects of various pre-germinative treatments on the germination of gulupa seeds from the municipality of Ramiriquí (Boyacá), such as: exposure to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), hypochlorite of sodium (NaOCl), gibberellic acid (GA3), distilled water imbibition and stratification at 4 °C, in varying concentrations and exposure times (24 and 48 hours), using an experimental design completely random, with three repetitions of 50 seed each one. Statistical analysis showed significant differences between treatments, with H2O2 being 15% the most effective, with a germination percentage (PG) of 88% in exposed seeds for 48 hours. In the presence of NaOCl the percentages were lower 36 - 40%. GA3 at 100 ppm for 24 hours recorded 51% PG, at the other concentrations of this growth regulator and exposure times this value was lower. The use of H2O2 has not been reported as a treatment to induce germination in the genus Passiflora. These results can be applied for the treatment of seeds in plant species can be a viable, effective, economical and easily applicable alternative.
