Abstract Capuchin monkeys are currently represented by four species of Cebus and eight of Sapajus. This group is taxonomically complex and several questions still need to be clarified. In the current study, using mtDNA markers and a larger sample representation than in previous studies, we seek to understand the phylogenetic relationships among the capuchin lineages and their historical biogeography. All 12 species of capuchins were analyzed for the mitochondrial Control Region and Cytochrome b to test two biogeographical hypotheses: “Reinvasion of the Amazon (ROA)” and “Sympatric Evolution (SEV)”. The phylogenetic relationships among distinct lineages within genera is consistent with an evolutionary diversification pattern probably resulting from an explosive process of diversification and dispersal between 2.0 Ma and 3.0 Ma. Also, the analyses show that the ancestral capuchins were distributed in a wide area encompassing the Amazon and Atlantic Forest. Our results support the SEV hypothesis, showing that the current syntopic distribution of Cebus and Sapajus can be explained by a sympatric speciation event in the Amazon. We also indicate that the recently proposed species taxonomy of Cebus is not supported, and that S. cay and S. macrocephalus are a junior synonym of S. apella.

Abstract Hybridization has been reported increasingly frequently in recent years, fueling the debate on its role in the evolutionary history of species. Some studies have shown that hybridization is very common in captive New World primates, and hybrid offspring have phenotypes and physiological responses distinct from those of the "pure" parents, due to gene introgression. Here we used the TA15 Alu insertion to investigate hybridization in the genus Saimiri. Our results indicate the hybridization of Saimiri boliviensis peruviensis with S. sciureus macrodon, and S. b. boliviensis with S. ustus. Unexpectedly, some hybrids of both S. boliviensis peruviensis and S. b. boliviensis were homozygous for the absence of the insertion, which indicates that the hybrids were fertile.

O tambaqui, Colossoma macropomum, é a espécie de peixes mais popularmente usada para a aquicultura no Brasil, mas não há nenhum estudo comparando a variação genética entre as populações nativas e de cultivo desta espécie. No presente estudo foram analisadas sequências de DNA mitocondrial para avaliar a diversidade genética entre duas populações selvagens, um plantel de produção de alevinos, e uma amostra de estoques de piscicultura, todos da região de Santarém, no oeste do estado do Pará. Níveis similares de diversidade genética foram encontrados em todas as amostras e, surpreendentemente, o plantel mostrou expressiva representação da diversidade genética registrada em populações selvagens. Estes resultados contrastam consideravelmente com os do estudo anterior de estoques cultivados nos estados do Amapá, Pará, Piauí, Rondônia, que registrou apenas dois haplótipos, indicando uma longa história de endogamia nas matrizes utilizadas para a produção de alevinos. Os resultados dos dois estudos mostram dois cenários distintos de aquicultura do tambaqui na Amazônia, que devem ser melhor avaliados, a fim de garantir o sucesso da expansão da atividade na região, e no resto do Brasil, já que o tambaqui e seus híbridos agora são cultivados em todo o país.

The tambaqui, Colossoma macropomum, is the most popular fish species used for aquaculture in Brazil but there is no study comparing genetic variation among native and farmed populations of this species. In the present study, we analyzed DNA sequences of the mitochondrial DNA to evaluate the genetic diversity among two wild populations, a fry-producing breeding stock, and a sample of fish farm stocks, all from the region of Santarém, in the west of the Brazilian state of Pará. Similar levels of genetic diversity were found in all the samples and surprisingly the breeding stock showed expressive representation of the genetic diversity registered on wild populations. These results contrast considerably with those of the previous study of farmed stocks in the states of Amapá, Pará, Piauí, and Rondônia, which recorded only two haplotypes, indicating a long history of endogamy in the breeding stocks used to produce fry. The results of the two studies show two distinct scenarios of tambaqui farming in the Amazon basin, which must be better evaluated in order to guarantee the successful expansion of this activity in the region, and the rest of Brazil, given that the tambaqui and its hybrids are now farmed throughout the country.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a eficiência da inoculação de bactérias diazotróficas e da adubação nitrogenada, em duas variedades de cana-de-açúcar, cultivadas nas mesmas condições edafoclimáticas. O experimento foi conduzido durante os anos agrícolas de 2006/2007 e 2008/2009, em delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições, instalado em março de 2006 em área de cultivo comercial, no Município de Campos dos Goytacazes, RJ. Os tratamentos foram: inoculação com bactérias diazotróficas, adubação com 120 kg ha-1 de N, e o controle sem inoculação e sem adubação com nitrogênio. As variedades de cana-de-açúcar avaliadas foram RB72454 e RB867515. O inoculante continha estirpes de cinco espécies de bactérias diazotróficas. Foram feitas avaliações quanto à produtividade de colmos frescos, ao acúmulo de matéria seca total, ao N total da parte aérea e quanto à abundância natural de 15N do N disponível no solo e na cana-de-açúcar. As variedades apresentaram comportamentos distintos com os tratamentos, em que a RB867515 foi responsiva e a RB72454 não responsiva à inoculação e à adubação nitrogenada. Na variedade RB867515, o crescimento e o acúmulo de N total na parte aérea das plantas, promovidos pela inoculação, foram similares aos do tratamento com adubação nitrogenada.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of inoculation with diazotrophic bacteria and nitrogen fertilization, in two varieties of sugarcane grown under the same edaphic and climatic conditions. The experiment was carried out during the agricultural years 2006/2007 and 2008/2009, in a randomized block design with four replicates, installed in March 2006 in an area of commercial cultivation in Campos dos Goytacazes city, in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. The treatments were: inoculation with diazotrophic bacteria, fertilization with 120 kg ha-1 N, and a control without inoculation and without nitrogen fertilization. The sugarcane varieties evaluated were RB72454 and RB867515. The inoculant was composed of five strains of diazotrophic bacteria. Evaluations were done for fresh stalk yield, total dry matter accumulation, total N of shoots, and 15N natural abundance from available N in the soil and in sugarcane. The varieties performed differently to treatments, in which RB867515 was responsive and RB72454 unresponsive to inoculation and nitrogen fertilization. In the variety RB867515, growth and accumulation of total N in the shoots, promoted by inoculation, were similar to the ones in the treatment with N fertilization.

Introdução: vários são os estudos que investigam a relação entre o sedentarismo como fator de risco para diversas patologias, bem como a relação de um estilo de vida ativo como fator de proteção a agravos a saúde. O Método Pilates® surge como forma de condicionamento físico interessado em proporcionar bem-estar geral ao indivíduo, e capaz de proporcionar força, flexibilidade, boa postura, controle motor, consciência e percepção corporal melhorada. Objetivo: analisar a influência do método Pilates® sobre a resistência de força na flexão de braço e em exercício abdominal em mulheres submetidas a uma intervenção de nove semanas. Metodologia: o estudo foi composto por 12 voluntárias do sexo feminino com idade entre 25 e 40 anos. Os testes realizados foram o de abdominal e flexão de braço. O grupo foi submetido a um pré e um pós-teste, havendo um período de nove semanas entre cada uma das avaliações. Entre os pré e pós-teste, o grupo foi submetido a três sessões semanais de treinamento de 50 minutos cada com o Método Pilates®. Resultados: foi verificada diferença significativa entre o pré e o pós-teste (p < 0.05), demonstrando assim uma melhora no pós-teste em relação aos valores encontrados no pré-teste. Discussão: a prática do Método Pilates® tende a se apresentar como um importante aliado na promoção da saúde e indicando possibilidade de ganhos no que se refere à melhora no perfil dos padrões de resistência de força dos praticantes da atividade

Back Ground: several studies investigate the relation of the lack of exercises and the factor of risk for diverse pathologies, and the relation of active style of life as protection factor the risk the health. The Pilates® Method appears as form of interested physical conditioning in providing general individual wellness, and capable to provide force, flexibility, good position, motor control, body conscience and improved corporal perception. Objective: to analyze the Pilates® method influence on the resistance of force in the arm flex and abdominal exercise in women submitted a nine weeks intervention. Methodology: the study he was composed for 12 feminine volunteers with age between 25 and 40 years. The carried through tests had been of the abdominal and arm flex. The group was submitted to a pre-test and a after-test, having had a period of nine weeks between each one of the evaluations. Between the pre and after-test, the group was submitted the three weekly sessions of training of 50 minutes each with the Pilates® Method. Results: it was verified significant difference between pre and after-test (p < 0.05), thus demonstrating an improvement in the after-test in relation to the values found in the pre-test. Discussion: the practical Pilates® Method one of the tends if to present as an important ally in the promotion of the health and indicating possibility of profits in that if it relates to the improvement in the profile of the standards of resistance of force of the practitioners of the activity
