ABSTRACT Background: Mansonia mosquitoes transmit arboviruses to humans. This study describes the karyotypes and C-banding of Mansonia humeralis, Mansonia titillans, Mansonia pseudotitillans, and Mansonia indubitans. Methods: From the 202 larvae, the brain ganglia were dissected (n=120) for the preparation of slides. Twenty slides with well-distended chromosomes for each species (10 for karyotyping and 10 for C-banding) were selected for further study. Results: The haploid genome and the average lengths of the chromosomal arms differed in relation to the centromere between species, and intraspecific differences also occurred in the distribution of the C-bands. Conclusions: These results are useful for better understanding of the chromosomal variability of Mansonia mosquitoes.

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar as características do sono em crianças e adolescentes portadores de diabetes melito tipo 1 (DM1) e sua relação com o controle glicêmico. Métodos: Estudo transversal realizado em um hospital público de São Paulo. A amostra foi composta de 86 portadores de DM1 entre 10 e 18 anos, aderentes à insulinoterapia, com monitoração mínima de três glicemias capilares ao dia e função tireoidiana normal. Foram avaliados os dados clínicos, antropométricos e laboratoriais de cada paciente. Utilizaram-se a Escala de Sonolência Diurna Pediátrica (ESDP) e o Questionário de Cronotipo de Munique (QCTM). Resultados: A média de hemoglobina glicada (HbA1c) foi 9,2±2,1%, sendo maior em adolescentes. A média do escore da ESDP foi 13,9±4,7. Pacientes com HbA1c<7,5% tiveram menor escore na ESDP e maior duração do sono em dias de semana do que pacientes com HbA1c≥7,5%. Verificaram-se correlações negativas da HbA1c com valores do cronotipo e com duração do sono em dias de semana e correlação positiva da HbA1c com jet lag social. Pacientes com tempo de DM1 menor que três anos tiveram maior prevalência de sonolência diurna. A análise de regressão apontou que, quanto maior a HbA1c e menor o tempo de diagnóstico de DM1, maior a chance de sonolência diurna, independentemente de idade e sexo. Conclusões: Pacientes com HbA1c mais elevada apresentaram mais sonolência diurna, cronotipo matutino, menor duração do sono em dias de semana e maior jet lag social. O menor tempo de diagnóstico de DM1 e HbA1c≥7,5% aumentaram a chance de maior sonolência diurna.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate sleep characteristics of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and their relationship with glycemic control. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at a public hospital in São Paulo, Brazil. It included 86 patients with T1DM, aged between 10 and 18 years old, who were on insulin therapy, had performed at least three measurements of capillary blood glucose throughout the day, and had normal thyroid function. The clinical, anthropometric, and laboratory data of each patient were evaluated. The Pediatric Daytime Sleepiness Scale (PDSS) and the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire (MCTQ) were used to assess the sleep characteristics. Results: The mean level of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) was 9.2±2.1%, and it was higher in adolescents than in children. The mean score of PDSS was 13.9±4.7. Patients with HbA1c<7.5% had lower PDSS scores and longer sleep duration on weekdays than patients with HbA1c≥7.5%. HbA1c levels were negatively correlated with chronotype values and sleep duration on weekdays and positively correlated with social jet lag. Patients who had had T1DM for less than three years had a higher prevalence of daytime sleepiness. The regression analysis showed that higher HbA1c (≥7.5%) and shorter time since the diagnosis of T1DM increased the chance of daytime sleepiness, regardless of age and sex. Conclusions: Patients with higher HbA1c had more daytime sleepiness, a morning chronotype, shorter sleep duration on weekdays and a more significant social jet lag. The shorter diagnosis time for T1DM and greater levels of HbA1c increased the chance of daytime sleepiness.

RESUMO O desenvolvimento de cultivares mais tolerantes à seca é essencial para a manutenção da produção agrícola mundial. Objetivou-se realizar uma seleção precoce de genótipos de Coffea arabica tolerantes à seca, avaliando-se sua divergência funcional por meio de análises morfológicas, anatômicas e fisiológicas. Mudas de 14 genótipos foram submetidas ao estresse hídrico imposto pela irrigação por 18 dias. Foram medidos parâmetros de crescimento e anatômicos, potencial hídrico foliar e trocas gasosas. Em condições irrigadas e seca prolongada (18 dias), a divergência entre os genótipos foi determinada principalmente por características morfológicas, como área foliar, diâmetro do caule e, consequentemente, massa seca da parte aérea. Sob seca moderada (14 dias), parâmetros como potencial hídrico, espessura da cutícula, densidade estomática, número de vasos do xilema e eficiência do uso da água foram importantes para a divergência do grupo com maior capacidade de manter seu estado hídrico. Os genótipos 1,2,4,11 e 12 possuem características que contribuíram para a manutenção do estado hídrico, como maior espessura de cutícula, densidade estomática, menor número de vasos xilemáticos e espessura do floema, maior comprimento de raiz e maior eficiência de uso de água. A divergência funcional combinando análises morfológicas, anatômicas e fisiológicas em resposta à seca moderada indicou a seleção precoce dos genótipos 1, 2, 4, 11 e 12 como mais tolerantes à seca durante a fase de muda.

ABSTRACT The development of more drought-tolerant cultivars is essential for the maintenance of global agricultural production. This study aimed to perform an early selection of drought-tolerant Coffea arabica genotypes by evaluating their functional divergence using morphological, anatomical and physiological analyses. Seedlings of 14 genotypes were subjected to the drought stress imposed by irrigation for 18 days. Growth and anatomical parameters, leaf water potential and gas exchanges were measured. Under irrigated conditions and prolonged drought (18 days), the divergence among the genotypes was determined mainly by morphological traits, such as leaf area, stem diameter and, consequently, shoot dry mass. Under moderate drought (14 days), parameters such as water potential, cuticle thickness, stomatal density, number of xylem vessels and water-use efficiency were important for the divergence of the group with the highest ability to maintain its water status. The genotypes 1, 2, 4, 11 and 12 have characteristics that contributed to the maintenance of water status, such as greater cuticle thickness, stomatal density, smaller number of xylem vessels and phloem thickness, bigger root length and greater water-use efficiency. The functional divergence combining morphological, anatomical and physiological analyses in response to the moderate drought indicated the early selection of the genotypes 1, 2,4, 11 and 12 as more drought tolerant during the seedling stage.

Abstract: Cerrado is the second largest biome in Brazil and majorly contributes to the country's grain production. Previous studies on soil metagenomics from the Cerrado revealed an outstanding microbial diversity. In this study, the abundance of pathogenic fungi was analyzed using metagenomic sequences of the Cerrado soils under native vegetation, and under agriculture with no-tillage and conventional tillage. In total, 128,627 sequences of fungi were identified, with 43,439 representing pathogenic fungi and were distributed as follows: native 17,301 (40%), no-tillage 13,780 (32%), and conventional tillage 12,358 (28%). We identified 41 pathogenic fungal species associated with human and animal infections. The data analysis revealed that the native soils had a higher relative abundance of fungal sequences, similar to pathogenic species sequences, in relation to the total eukaryotic sequences, than the conventional tillage and no-tillage treatments, which observed a reduction in fungal abundance because of anthropogenic activities.

Abstract With the COVID-19 pandemic, many diagnostic tests (molecular or immunological) were rapidly standardised, given the urgency of the situation, many are still in the process of being validated. The main objective of this study was to review the aspects of the diagnostic kits approved in Brazil and their application in the different federative units to gather epidemiological information. In order to achieve these objectives, a survey was carried out on the data available at the regulatory agency (ANVISA) and in the literature. The main countries that have registered products in Brazil are China (51.4%), Brazil (16.6%), South Korea (9.2%), USA (8.8%) and Germany (3.6%). The methodologies of these products are based on the detection of nucleic-acid (15.8%), antigen (13%) and antibody (71.2%). In the immunological tests, it was verified that the sensitivity ranged from 55 to 100% and the specificity from 80 to 100%. The percentage of cases in the samples tested in Brazil is elevated in almost all federative units since eight states showed 40% of positive cases in tested samples, while 18 states displayed between 20 and 40%. In conclusion, this review showed that Brazil is dependent on external technology to respond to pandemics, epidemics and endemics disease and needs to improve its biotechnological scheme to solve further diseases outbreaks.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the construction of the Jirau hydroelectric plant on the anopheline species, in Porto Velho, Rondônia, Brazil. For this, sampling was carried out in 23 locations in the pre (2004) and 23 after construction (2018) phases in the hydroelectric dam's coverage area, performed by human landing catch between 6:00 pm and 10:00 pm. We found 14 anopheline species. In the pre-construction phase, An. darlingi (73%) was the most abundant and after construction An. braziliensis (31.5%) was the most abundant. The T test indicated that there were no differences in the indexes – diversity (H '), richness (Sjack 1), equitability (J’) and dominance (d) of anophelines species - evaluated between the phases (p > 0.05). The spatio-temporal distribution of An. darlingi proved to be wide, with the highest density values observed in March ( x ¯w = 27.1) in the pre-construction phase and in the months of May ( x ¯w = 4) and July ( x ¯w = 3.1), post-construction. Differences in hematophagic activity peaks were observed between species and between phases. According to the data obtained in this study, the construction of the hydroelectric plant had little influence on the composition of anopheline species, however changes were observed in the spatio-temporal distribution of the An. darlingi and in the pattern of hematophagic activity of the species, which directly influenced the dynamics of malaria in the region.

Método Trata-se de um estudo de caso único, com abordagem qualitativa, desenvolvido por meio de análise documental e por entrevistas individuais com roteiro semiestruturado com dez docentes e 14 discentes entrevistados no período de fevereiro a maio de 2015. A análise dos dados foi realizada segundo os pressupostos da Análise Crítica do Discurso. Resultados Os dados revelaram a existência de tensões e ambivalências entre duas formas de relação entre teoria e prática. A primeira, relacionada à teoria-prática como unidade indissolúvel e a segunda à visão da teoria e prática como instâncias dicotômicas e predomínio da teoria precedendo a prática. Conclusões e implicações para a prática Há fragilidades na efetivação da articulação teórico-prática no currículo do curso de Enfermagem investigado, evidenciando a supremacia do paradigma cartesiano no ensino superior de Enfermagem. Dessa forma, torna-se premente instituir estratégias que viabilizem a indissociabilidade teórico-prática no currículo.

Results The data revealed the existence of tensions and ambivalences among two forms of relationship between theory and practice. The first, related to theory-practice as an indissoluble unit and the second, to the view of theory and practice as dichotomous instances and the predominance of theory preceding practice. Conclusions and implications for practice There are weaknesses in the implementation of theoretical and practical articulation in the curriculum of the Nursing course investigated, showing the supremacy of the cartesian paradigm in higher education in Nursing. Thus, it is urgent to institute strategies that enable the theoretical-practical inseparability in the curriculum.

RESUMO CONTEXTO: A desnutrição está associada a fatores clínicos, incluindo maior tempo de internação, aumento da morbimortalidade e custos hospitalares. OBJETIVO: Investigar a prevalência de desnutrição por diferentes indicadores nutricionais e identificar fatores que contribuem para a desnutrição em pacientes hospitalizados. MÉTODOS: Investigou-se indicadores antropométricos, laboratoriais, nutritional risk screening, avaliação subjetiva global (ASG), mini avaliação nutricional e consumo energético habitual (CEH). Utilizou-se os testes qui-quadrado, exato de Fisher, Mann-Whitney e análise de regressão de Cox univariada e múltipla, com nível de significância de 5%. RESULTADOS: Verificou-se 21,01% de desnutridos pela ASG; 34,78% com risco nutricional pelo NRS e 11,59% com baixo peso pelo índice de massa corporal (IMC). Não houve diferença estatisticamente significante da prevalência de desnutrição pela ASG (P=0,3344) e de risco nutricional pelo NRS (P=0,2286), entre os tipos de doenças. Os pacientes com risco nutricional apresentaram maior mediana de idade (64,5 vs 58,0 anos; P=0,0246) e menores valores medianos no CEH (1362,1 kcal vs 1525 kcal, P=0,0030); na circunferência de panturrilha (CP) (32,0 cm vs 33,5 cm, P=0,0405); na contagem de linfócitos (CL) (1176,5 cel/mm3 vs 1760,5 cel/mm3, P=0,0095); e maior percentual de baixo peso pelo IMC (22,9% vs 5,6%; P=0,0096). A CL foi associada ao risco nutricional (P=0,0414; HR=1,000; IC95%= 0,999; 1,000). CONCLUSÃO: O NRS foi mais sensível que outros indicadores no diagnóstico de desnutrição. Pacientes com risco apresentaram mais idade e valores menores de CEH, CP, IMC e CL. A baixa CL foi considerada fator associado ao risco nutricional pelo NRS.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Malnutrition is associated with clinical factors, including longer hospital stay, increased morbidity and mortality and hospital costs. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of malnutrition using different nutritional indicators and to identify factors that contribute to malnutrition in hospitalized patients. METHODS: We investigated anthropometric, laboratory standards, nutritional risk screening (NRS), subjective global assessment (SGA), mini nutritional assessment and habitual energy consumption (HEC). Chi-square, Fisher’s exact test, Mann-Whitney test and univariate and multiple Cox regression analysis were used, at 5% significance level. RESULTS: It was found 21.01% of malnourished individuals by ASG; a total of 34.78% with nutritional risk according to NRS and 11.59% with low weight (BMI). There was no statistically significant difference in the prevalence of malnutrition by ASG (P=0.3344) and nutritional risk by NRS (P=0.2286), among the types of disorders. Patients with nutritional risk were of higher median age (64.5 vs 58.0 years; P=0.0246) and had lower median values of HEC (1362.1 kcal vs 1525 kcal, P=0.0030), of calf circumference (32.0 cm vs 33.5 cm, P=0.0405) of lymphocyte count (1176.5 cell/mm3 vs 1760.5 cell/ mm3, P=0.0095); and higher percentage of low body weight according to the BMI (22.9% vs 5.6%; P=0.0096). Lymphocyte count was associated with nutritional risk (P=0.0414; HR= 1.000; IC95%= 0.999; 1.000). CONCLUSION: NRS was more sensitive than other indicators in the diagnosis of malnutrition. Patients at risk were older and had lower HEC values, calf circumference, BMI and lymphocyte count. Low lymphocyte count was considered a factor associated with nutritional risk by the NRS.

Abstract In the northern Minas region, the dry-warm climate predisposes coffee plants to the occurrence of leaf miners, mites, cercosporiosis, and leaf scald. Aiming for the development of a cultivar adapted to these conditions, Coffea canephora Pierre ex A. Froehner clones were selected through genetic parameters under an irrigated system, without agrochemicals. Eighteen agronomic traits were evaluated. The survival rate, number of nodes per plagiotropic branch, leaf miner infestation and cercosporiosis incidence were chosen as characteristics for selection of ‘Vitória Incaper 8142’, once they have shown superiority of the genetic parameters. The survival rate variable was used to rank the EMCAPA 8141 Robustão Capixaba clones. Clones V2, V4, V6, V13, RC7, and RC9 were selected as more tolerant to pests and diseases and can provide genetic improvements in conilon breeding program for region. The genetic dissimilarity identified between clones allowed suitable clone combinations to be proposed for use in future crosses.

Abstract Listeria is an unusual pathogen that causes neonatal infection with high morbidity and mortality. We present the case of a premature newborn whose mother had a rash during pregnancy; the newborn had severe early sepsis because of Listeria monocytogenes and histopathologically suggestive findings of the placenta. Obstetricians and neonatologists should suspect listeriosis in cases with compatible epidemiological history, clinical features, and examination findings of the placenta.

Abstract The objective of this study was to describe the genetic parameters, adaptability, and stability of clones from the Coffea canephora variety ‘Vitória Incaper 8142’, and the genetic divergence between them. Following 12 and 24 months of plant growth, several traits were evaluated, including stem diameter, plant height, canopy diameter, number of plagiotropic branches, and number of nodes per plagiotropic branch. The agronomic performance of four crops was determined using measurements of productivity, yield, percentage of floating grains, and grade of the beans. Variability was observed between the clones for the majority of the traits measured. The clones V7, V10, V12, and V13 were the most stable and displayed the highest degree of adaptation for the studied traits, and thus these clones will be used to establish a base population suited to the growing conditions in Alto Suaçuí, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Additionally, the genetic dissimilarity identified between clones allowed suitable clone combinations to be proposed for use in future crosses.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to describe the curriculum evaluation process implemented in 2009, in the Nursing School of UFMG. For this, researchers adopted the Context, Inputs, Process and Product Evaluation Model. The text consists of four parts: collective construction of the curricular proposal; design of curriculum evaluation; dimensions of the evaluation process; results of one of the strategies employed. The evaluation process has favored the collective analysis of the curriculum dimensions, even with teachers' participation lower than expected, the analysis of the impact of training in the labor market and the inclusion of students in the process. The adopted model, although having a rational character, has enabled reinventions in the assessment, with implications in the ways of educational subjectivity.

RESUMEN El objetivo del presente estudio fue describir el proceso de evaluación del plan de estudios puesto en práctica en 2009 en la Escuela de Enfermería de la UFMG. Para ello, hemos adoptado el modelo de evaluación de contexto, insumos, procesos y productos. El texto consta de cuatro partes: construcción colectiva de la propuesta del plan de estudios; diseño de la evaluación del plan de estudios; dimensiones del proceso de evaluación; resultados obtenidos en una de las estrategias empleadas. El proceso de evaluación ha favorecdo el análisis colectivo de las dimensiones del plan de estudios; incluso con participación docente inferior a lo esperado; análisis del impacto de la formación en el mercado laboral e inclusión de los estudiantes en el proceso. A pesar de ser racional, el modelo adoptado ha permitido reinvenciones en los procesos de evaluación, con implicaciones en los modos de subjetivación docente.

RESUMO O objetivo é descrever o processo de avaliação curricular implementado em 2009, na Escola de Enfermagem da UFMG. Para isso, foi adotado o Modelo de Avaliação Contexto, Insumos, Processo e Produto. O texto consta de quatro partes: construção coletiva da proposta curricular; concepção da avaliação curricular; dimensões do processo de avaliação; resultados obtidos em uma das estratégias empregadas. O processo de avaliação tem favorecido a análise coletiva sobre as dimensões do currículo, mesmo com participação docente aquém do esperado, a análise sobre os impactos da formação no mercado de trabalho e a inserção dos discentes no processo. O modelo adotado, embora de caráter racional, tem possibilitado reinvenções nos processos de avaliação, com implicações nos modos de subjetivação docente.

New Mycobacterium leprae protein antigens can contribute to improved serologic tests for leprosy diagnosis/classification and multidrug therapy (MDT) monitoring. This study describes seroreactivity to M. leprae proteins among participants from three highly endemic leprosy areas in Brazil: central-western Goiânia/Goiás (GO) (n = 225), Rondonópolis/Mato Grosso (MT) (n = 764) and northern Prata Village/Pará (PA) (n = 93). ELISA was performed to detect IgG to proteins (92f, 46f, leprosy IDRI diagnostic-1, ML0405, ML1213) and IgM to phenolic glycolipid-I (PGL-I). Multibacillary (MB) leprosy had positive rates for PGL-I that were similar to those for proteins; however, some anti-PGL-I-negative subjects were positive for proteins, suggesting that adding protein antigen to PGL-I can enhance the sensitivity of MB leprosy detection. In MT, different degrees of seroreactivity were observed and ranked for MB, former patients after MDT, paucibacillary (PB) leprosy, household contact (HHC) and endemic control (EC) groups. The seroreactivity of PB patients was low in GO and MT. HHCs from different endemic sites had similar IgG antibody responses to proteins. 46f and 92f were not recognised by most tuberculosis patients, ECs or HHCs within GO, an area with high BCG vaccination coverage. Low positivity in EC and HHC was observed in PA and MT. Our results provide evidence for the development of an improved serologic test that could be widely applicable for MB leprosy testing in Brazil.

It is also a powerful pedagogical instrument for the qualification of nurses within the Brazilian healthcare system. In the teaching of infectious diseases, using the CIPESC® assists in analyzing the interventions by encouraging clinical and epidemiological thinking regarding the health-illness process. With the purpose in mind of developing resources for teaching undergraduate nursing students and encouraging reflection regarding the process of nursing work, this article presents an experimental application of CIPESC®, using meningococcal meningitis as an example.

La CIPESC® es un instrumento de trabajo del enfermero en Salud Colectiva que busca apoyar la sistematización de su práctica asistencial, gerencial y de investigación. Es también un instrumento pedagógico potente para la formación y calificación de enfermeros comprometidos con el SUS. En la enseñanza de las enfermedades transmisibles, el uso de la CIPESC® ayuda al análisis de las intervenciones realizadas, al estimular el razonamiento clínico y epidemiológico del proceso salud-enfermedad y de las necesidades de salud individuales, familiares y sociales. Con el propósito de desarrollar recursos didácticos para el currículo de Enfermería y estimular la reflexión sobre el proceso de trabajo de Enfermería, este artículo presenta el relato de una experiencia de aplicación de la CIPESC®, tomando como ejemplo la meningitis meningocócica.

A CIPESC® é um instrumento de trabalho do enfermeiro em Saúde Coletiva, que visa apoiar a sistematização de sua prática assistencial, gerencial e de investigação. É também, instrumental pedagógico potente para a formação e qualificação de enfermeiros comprometidos com o SUS. No ensino das doenças transmissíveis, o uso da CIPESC® auxilia a análise sobre as intervenções, ao estimular o raciocínio clínico e epidemiológico do processo saúde-doença e das necessidades de saúde dos indivíduos, famílias e grupos sociais.
