This study aimed to evaluate the effect of gamma irradiation (GI) on the physicochemical, technological, antioxidant and microbiological characteristics of different whole sorghum flours (WSF), as well as to characterize the profile of chemical constituents by paper spray mass spectrometry (PS-MS). The doses applied interfered in the staining characteristics of the evaluated flours, providing the darkening of the same. For the other physicochemical, technological, and antioxidant parameters, no significant influence of the process was observed. The fingerprint obtained in both ionization modes had not been influenced by irradiation, being flavonoids, phenylpropanoids, amino acids, benzoic acid derivatives, carboxylic acids, and sugars tentatively identified. In microbiological terms, there was a reduction of molds, yeasts, and Bacillus cereus in irradiated WSF compared to control (non-irradiated). Therefore, the application of low doses of gamma irradiation represents an advantageous alternative for the conservation of WSF and maintenance of bioactive compounds identified by the PS-MS technique.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to implement and assess hearing health interventions for school students, using Dangerous Decibels® Program activities in partnership with the Young Doctor Project, approaching noise-induced hearing loss prevention. Methods: the study encompassed 41 students, aged 12 to 14 years, from two schools in inland São Paulo and a social institution for public school students. Activities were based on the Young Doctor Project and the Dangerous Decibels® Brazil Program. The students answered a questionnaire administered in three situations: before the intervention (pre), right after the intervention (post), and 4 months after the intervention. The ANOVA, Friedman (p < 0.001), and Tukey´s (p < 0.05) statistical tests were used. Results: the 41 students who participated in the program were protagonists of knowledge, spreading the content they learned to another 954 students in the three schools through cultural workshops. The analysis of program effectiveness revealed improved results right after the intervention and 4 months afterward. Conclusion: combining these two programs encouraged the protagonism of young people to increase their involvement with the community. Moreover, the students changed their attitude toward potentially dangerous sounds.

RESUMO Objetivo: implementar e avaliar intervenções em saúde auditiva para escolares, utilizando as atividades do Programa Dangerous Decibels ®, em parceria com o Projeto Jovem Doutor, abordando aspectos preventivos da perda auditiva induzida por níveis de pressão sonora elevados. Métodos: participaram do estudo 41 escolares, com idade entre 12 e 14 anos, de duas escolas no interior de São Paulo e uma Instituição Social direcionada a estudantes de escolas públicas. As atividades foram baseadas no Projeto Jovem Doutor e no programa Dangerous Decibels ® Brasil. Os escolares responderam a um questionário aplicado em três situações, antes da intervenção (pré), logo após a intervenção (pós) e quatro meses após a intervenção. Foram utilizados os testes estatísticos ANOVA, FRIEDMAN; p<0,001 e TUKEY; p<0,05. Resultados: os 41 escolares que participaram do programa atuaram como protagonistas do conhecimento, multiplicando o conteúdo aprendido através das oficinas culturais, envolvendo 954 escolares das três escolas. Ao analisar a eficácia do programa, observou-se melhora nos resultados logo após a intervenção e, também, após 4 meses. Conclusão: a união desses dois programas incentivou o protagonismo juvenil, objetivando o maior envolvimento dos estudantes junto da comunidade. Foi possível observar a mudança de atitude dos escolares frente aos sons potencialmente perigosos.

ABSTRACT Background: Women living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) (WLWH) are more likely to be infected with the oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV). We assessed the prevalence of high-risk (HR) (16/18/31/33/35/39/45/51/52/56/58/59/68/73/82), probable high-risk (pHR) (26/53/66), and low-risk (LR) (6/11/40/42/43/44/54/61/70) HPV types and their associated risk factors. Methods: This cross-sectional study of WLWH aged 18-64 years included one laboratory and eight HIV-specialty healthcare facilities in the pilot network. Descriptive statistics were used to assess sociodemographic and behavioral characteristics. Adjusted analyses were conducted to evaluate risk factors associated with HR and/or pHR HPV infection in WLWH. Results: From May/2021 to May/2022, 1,914 (92.5%) WLWH participated in the pilot study and had valid HPV-DNA results of self-collected vaginal samples. The median age of the participants was 45 years, 60.1% had ≥ 9 years of schooling, 80.5% were ≤ 18 years at first sexual intercourse, and 51.7% had > 4 sexual partners throughout life. The prevalence of any HPV type, HR HPV, pHR HPV, and LR HPV was 65.8%, 49.6%, 16.7%, and 40.0%, respectively. Age was inversely associated with pHR and/or HR-HPV (p < 0.001), and education level was inversely associated with HR-HPV (p = 0.003) types. Any HR or pHR was associated with being single (p = 0.029) and exchanging sex for drugs (p = 0.037). Conclusions: The prevalence of HPV, especially HR HPV, among WLWH is high in Brazil, highlighting the need for HPV screening in this population. Self-collection of vaginal samples is an important strategy for increasing testing access.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the contribution of oral and maxillofacial pathology laboratories (OMPLs) in Brazilian public universities to the diagnosis of lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). A cross-sectional study was performed using biopsy records from a consortium of sixteen public OMPLs from all regions of Brazil (North, Northeast, Central-West, Southeast, and South). Clinical and demographic data of patients diagnosed with lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCC between 2010 and 2019 were collected from the patients’ histopathological records. Of the 120,010 oral and maxillofacial biopsies (2010-2019), 6.9% (8,321 cases) were diagnosed as lip (0.8%, 951 cases), oral cavity (4.9%, 5,971 cases), and oropharyngeal (1.2%, 1,399 cases) SCCs. Most cases were from Brazil’s Southeast (64.5%), where six of the OMPLs analyzed are located. The predominant profile of patients with lip and oral cavity SCC was Caucasian men, with a mean age over 60 years, low schooling level, and a previous history of heavy tobacco consumption. In the oropharyngeal group, the majority were non-Caucasian men, with a mean age under 60 years, had a low education level, and were former/current tobacco and alcohol users. According to data from the Brazilian National Cancer Institute, approximately 9.9% of the total lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCCs reported over the last decade in Brazil may have been diagnosed at the OMPLs included in the current study. Therefore, this data confirms the contribution of public OMPLs with respect to the important diagnostic support they provide to the oral healthcare services extended by the Brazilian Public Health System.

Abstract This work is part of the review of methodological procedures for the analysis and classification of terrain susceptibility to shallow translational landslides, following the geo-hydro ecological approach. The pilot area is located in Nova Friburgo (RJ), specifically in the D’Antas Creek basin (53 km2). At this stage of the work, geomorphological parameters and indices were evaluated, including slope angle, curvature, drainage efficiency index (DEI) and topography position index (TPI), seen as relevant in regulating the hydrological and mechanical behavior of soils. The results obtained were intersected with an inventory of landslide scars (n = 382) referring to the extreme rainfall event in January 2011, which occurred in the highland region, called Região Serrana, of the state of Rio de Janeiro. This intersection allowed an evaluation between these parameters and the slopes rupture. The concentration of landslide area per class subsidized the establishment of weights for each of the adopted classes, based on the AHP method. A readjustment of the slope angle classes was proposed, as well as the inclusion of the standard curvature in the construction of the Hydro-Geomorphological Conditions Map. The results were promising, with a concentration of 88.74% (0.85 km2) of the landslide areas in the class of high erosive potential.

RESUMO Objetivos: avaliar os atributos da Atenção Primária à Saúde, na perspectiva dos profissionais de saúde, comparando os serviços no Distrito Sanitário Especial Indígena e nas Secretarias Municipais de Saúde. Métodos: trata-se de um estudo transversal, na região do Alto Rio Negro, Amazonas, com 116 profissionais. Os dados foram coletados por meio do Primary Care Assessment Tool. Fez-se a categorização dos escores (≥ 6,6) - forte orientação e (< 6,6) - baixa orientação. O Teste Qui-Quadrado e de máxima verossimilhança para análise dos cruzamentos. A comparação entre os profissionais o Teste de Kruskal-Wallis. Resultados: foi observado escore geral maior no Distrito Sanitário Indígena (7,2). A mesma tendência foi observada individualmente nos atributos essenciais e derivados. Conclusões: este trabalho poderá subsidiar estratégias que impactem positivamente no modelo de gestão e processos de trabalho na perspectiva do fortalecimento da Atenção Primária ofertada à população rionegrina.

Methods: a cross-sectional study in the Upper Rio Negro region, State of Amazonas, with 116 professionals. The data were collected through the Primary Care Assessment Tool. Scores were categorized (≥ 6.6) - strong orientation and (<6.6) - low orientation. The chi-square and maximum likelihood test for crossover analysis. The comparison between professionals the Kruskal-Wallis Test. Results: a higher overall score was observed in the Indigenous Health District (7.2). The same trend was observed individually in the essential and derived attributes. Conclusions: this work may support strategies that positively impact the management model and work processes from the perspective of strengthening the primary care offered to the population from Rio Negro.

Métodos: este es un estudio transversal en la región del Alto Rio Negro, Amazonas, con 116 profesionales. Los datos fueron recolectados a través de la Primary Care Assessment Tool. Las puntuaciones se clasificaron (≥ 6.6) - orientación fuerte y (<6.6) - orientación baja. La prueba de chi-cuadrado y de máxima verosimilitud para el análisis cruzado. La comparación entre profesionales de la prueba de Kruskal-Wallis. Resultados: se observó una puntuación general más alta en el Distrito de Salud Indígena (7,2). La misma tendencia se observó individualmente en los atributos esenciales y derivados. Conclusiones: este trabajo puede apoyar estrategias que impacten positivamente el modelo de gestión y los procesos de trabajo desde la perspectiva del fortalecimiento de la Atención Primaria ofrecida a la población de Río Negro.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Hemophilia is a coagulopathy caused by a deficiency in coagulation factors VIII (hemophilia A) or IX (hemophilia B). It is a chronic disease and, hence, impairs the quality of life (Qol) of the patients. This study aimed to evaluate the Qol of patients with hemophilia using the WHOQOL-bref and the Haemo-A-Qol instruments, its relation to the clinical condition and its sociodemographic variables. Methods: This is a cross-sectional, epidemiological study, comprising 17 patients with hemophilia, registered at the hemocenter, who met the eligibility criteria. Data were collected using three questionnaires: a semi-structured clinical evaluation form, the WHOQOL-bref and the Haem-A-Qol. Results: The average age was 30 years old, and most participants declared themselves to be single (58.82%), without children (64.70%) and employed (58.82%). Hemophilia A was observed in 14 patients and the most severe form of the disease was more prevalent (64.70%). The average score of Qol, estimated by the WHOQOL-bref questionnaire was 74.3; being "social relations" the domain with the highest average. The Haem-A-Qol measured an average of 36.2 and the domain with the highest result was "Family Planning". Conclusion: Hemophilia had a higher negative impact upon the physical, sports and leisure features in the sample subjects. The analysis of the questionnaires did not reveal statistical agreement between them. Based on this, the Haem-A-Qol is considered the most recommended to evaluate the Qol, as it addresses factors more specifically related to the disease. No statistical significance was observed between the scores of Qol, as for the presence of comorbidities, gravity of the hemophilia and positive serology for infections.

Abstract INTRODUCTION: We assessed the clinical-epidemiological profile of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients in the Santos region (São Paulo state) with the highest AIDS prevalence in Brazil. METHODS Information was extracted from records of 409 AIDS-infected patients hospitalized between 2011 and 2016. RESULTS: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was diagnosed in 24.7% of patients during admission, and 39.6% of already diagnosed patients received highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) irregularly. The mortality rate was 19.1%, and the main secondary manifestations were neurotoxoplasmosis and tuberculosis. CONCLUSIONS: AIDS patients in the Santos region had high rates of late diagnosis and low treatment adherence.

ABSTRACT Brachiaria brizantha is a forage grass well adapted to tropical areas and cultivated in millions of hectares in Brazil. The apomictic mode of reproduction in this species, in addition to differences in ploidy between sexual and apomictic plants, impairs crossbreeding. The development of a methodology to transform apomictic cultivars will provide an option to introduce agronomic important traits to B. brizantha cv. Marandu. In addition, it will open the possibility to study in vivo the function of candidate genes involved in the apomictic reproduction. The objective of this work was to evaluate peeled seeds, isolated embryo from mature seeds, embryogenic calluses and embryogenic cell suspensions, as target explant for genetic transformation via biolistics. Plasmids bearing the marker genes gus and hptII under the control of the rice actin 1 promoter (pAct1-Os) or the maize ubiquitin 1 promoter (pUbi1Zm) were used. All the target-explants used were suitable for transient gene expression after bombardment, showing gus expression and resistance to hygromycin. Using embryogenic calluses and cell suspensions as target tissues, transgenic plants were regenerated and transgenes detected.

Este estudo investigou a relação entre problemas de comportamento externalizantes (PCE), internalizantes (PCI) e desses concomitantemente (PCEI) no início da adolescência (11 anos) e o consumo de substâncias (bebidas alcoólicas, tabaco e drogas ilícitas) aos 15 anos, utilizando dados da coorte de nascimentos de Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil, de 1993. Os problemas de comportamento foram avaliados pelo Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) aplicado às mães quando os filhos tinham 15 anos. O consumo de substâncias foi avaliado por meio de questionário sigiloso autoaplicado ao adolescente. A associação entre problemas de comportamento e uso de substâncias foi analisada por meio de regressão de Poisson com ajuste robusto da variância. Após ajuste para fatores de confusão, os adolescentes com PCE tiveram maior risco para consumo abusivo de álcool (RR = 1,74; IC95%: 1,21; 2,50) e para experimentação (RR = 1,78; IC95%: 1,42; 2,23) e uso de tabaco nos últimos 30 dias (RR = 2,38; IC95%: 1,64; 3,45). Os adolescentes com PCI tiveram maior risco de experimentar tabaco (RR = 1,54; IC95%: 1,22; 1,93) e de utilizá-lo nos últimos 30 dias (RR = 1,92; IC95%: 1,31; 2,83). Os adolescentes com PCEI apresentaram maior risco para experimentação (RR = 2,24; IC95%: 1,57; 3,21) e consumo de tabaco nos últimos 30 dias (RR = 3,01; IC95%: 1,63; 5,56), e menor risco de experimentação de álcool aos 15 anos (RR = 0,72; IC95%: 0,55; 0,94). Ações de saúde pública que atuem na redução dos problemas de comportamento no início da adolescência poderão diminuir o consumo de tabaco e de bebidas alcoólicas aos 15 anos.

This study investigated the relationship between externalizing behavior problems (EBP), internalizing behavior problems (IBP), and combined externalizing/internalizing behavior problems (EIBP) in early adolescence (11 years) and substance use (alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drugs) at 15 years, using data from the 1993 Pelotas (Brazil) birth cohort. Behavior problems were assessed with the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), applied to mothers when their children were 15 years old. Substance use was assessed with a self-applied confidential questionnaire for the adolescent. The association between behavior problems and substance use was analyzed with Poisson regression with robust adjustment of variance. After adjusting for confounding, adolescents with EBP showed higher risk of alcohol abuse (RR = 1.74, 95%CI: 1.21; 2.50) and experimentation (RR = 1.78, 95%CI: 1.42; 2,23) and tobacco use in the previous 30 days (RR = 2.38, 95%CI: 1.64; 3.45). Adolescents with IBP showed greater risk of having tried tobacco (RR = 1.54, 95%CI: 1.22; 1.93) and of having used tobacco products in the previous 30 days (RR = 1.92, 95%CI: 1.31; 2.83). Adolescents with EIBP showed greater risk of trying (RR = 2.24, 95%CI: 1.57; 3.21) and consuming tobacco products in the previous days (RR = 3.01, 95%CI: 1.63; 5.56), and lower risk of having tried alcohol at 15 years of age (RR = 0.72, 95%CI: 0.55; 0.94). Public health measures aimed at reducing behavior problems in early adolescence can help reduce tobacco and alcohol consumption at 15 years.

Este estudio investigó la relación entre los problemas de comportamiento externalizantes (PCE), internalizantes (PCI), y los que se producían concomitantemente (PCEI), al comienzo de la adolescencia (11 años) y el consumo de sustancias como: bebidas alcohólicas, tabaco y drogas ilícitas a los 15 años, utilizando datos de la cohorte de nacimientos de Pelotas, Brasil, de 1993. Los problemas de comportamiento fueron evaluados por el Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), aplicado a las madres cuando los hijos tenían 15 años. El consumo de sustancias se evaluó mediante un cuestionario anónimo, realizado por el propio adolescente. La asociación entre problemas de comportamiento y el uso de sustancias se analizó mediante la regresión de Poisson, con un ajuste robusto de variancia. Tras el ajuste para los factores de confusión, los adolescentes con PCE tuvieron un riesgo mayor de consumo abusivo de alcohol (RR = 1,74; IC95%: 1,21; 2,50) y de probar estas sustancias (RR = 1,78; IC95%: 1,42; 2,23), además del consumo de tabaco en los últimos 30 días (RR = 2,38; IC95%: 1,64; 3,45). Los adolescentes con PCI tuvieron un mayor riesgo de probar el tabaco (RR = 1,54; IC95%: 1,22; 1,93) y de consumirlo durante los últimos 30 días (RR = 1,92; IC95%: 1,31; 2,83). Los adolescentes con PCEI presentaron un mayor riesgo de probar estas sustancias (RR = 2,24; IC95%: 1,57; 3,21) y consumir tabaco durante los últimos 30 días (RR = 3,01; IC95%: 1,63; 5,56), y menor riesgo de probar el alcohol a los 15 años (RR = 0,72; IC95%: 0,55; 0,94). Se requieren acciones de salud pública que actúen en la reducción de los problemas de comportamiento al principio de la adolescencia, puesto que podrían disminuir el consumo de tabaco y bebidas alcohólicas a los 15 años.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE This systematic review study aimed to assess the evidence available for the association between breastfeeding and behavior disorders in childhood and adolescence. METHODS The search was carried out in the PubMed, Lilacs, and PsycINFO databases up to December 2016. Inclusion criteria were as follows: prospective, retrospective and cross-sectional studies assessing the association between breastfeeding and behavior disorders in childhood or adolescence, using psychometric tests, carried out in humans and published in Portuguese, English, or Spanish. The search was performed in several stages by two independent researchers using pre-established criteria. RESULTS Eighteen studies met the inclusion criteria. Breastfeeding for a period equal to or higher than three or four months seemed to be inversely associated with total behavior and conduct disorders in childhood; however, the association remains unclear for other behavior disorders. Only four studies assessed behavior disorders in adolescence, and when an association was found, it was likely to be positive. The duration of breastfeeding seemed to be more important than the exclusive or non-exclusive pattern of breastfeeding. CONCLUSIONS Breastfed children for at least three to four months had fewer total behavior and conduct disorders in childhood. Further studies are needed to better understand this association, particularly in adolescence and involving other behavioral profiles.
