ABSTRACT The expression ‘you need to know to conserve’ is a well-known cliche among biologists. Documenting the richness of a group of organisms is the first step towards understanding biodiversity and preparing efficient conservation plans. In this context, many efforts have been made to quantify the number of species on Earth and estimate the number of species still unknown to science. A few countries have complete and integrated databases estimating the approximate number of species recorded for their territory, particularly in the Global South. In Brazil, a country of continental dimensions, revealing the richness of the second most diverse clade of invertebrates (=Mollusca) has been a goal of taxonomists. Recently, in an unprecedented, collective, and integrated effort among Brazilian malacologists, it was possible to estimate how many valid species of molluscs are there in Brazil. In this effort, more than 30 mollusc experts joined together to update the Taxonomic Catalogue of the Brazilian Fauna (TCBF), a governmental website that allows a quick and real-time updating of all Metazoan. So far, more than 5,000 updates have been made in TCBF, indicating the presence of 3,552 valid species of molluscs in Brazil, distributed among the main clades as follows: Caudofoveata (10 spp.), Solenogastres (6 spp.), Polyplacophora (35 spp.), Scaphopoda (43 spp.), Cephalopoda (92 spp.), Bivalvia (629 spp.) and Gastropoda (2,737 spp.). The present study, in addition to demonstrating for the first time the richness of Brazilian molluscs, also presents the state of the art of this important phylum of invertebrates highlighting its most representative and neglected groups.

Abstract Introduction The Internet Gaming Disorder Scale – Short Form (IGDS9-SF) assesses the severity, harmful effects and/or consequences of excessive online and offline gaming. Its conciseness and theoretical foundations on current diagnostic criteria of gaming disorders make it a useful resource for clinical and screening settings. Objective To describe the process of cross-cultural adaptation of the IGDS9-SF to the Brazilian context. Methods The cross-cultural adaptation involved the steps of independent translation of the instrument, synthesis version, back-translation, pre-test and elaboration of the final version. Content validity assessment was conducted by a multidisciplinary committee of experts and consisted of both a quantitative analysis (calculation of content validity coefficients – CVC) and a qualitative analysis (assessment of the experts’ comments and suggestions). The pre-test sample consisted of 30 gamers with variable sociodemographic characteristics. Results The cross-cultural adaptation of the scale followed the proposed protocol, and the CVC was satisfactory (≥ 0.83) for all the structures and equivalences assessed. Most of the suggestions made by the experts were accepted (mainly adjustments and language standardization). The gamers who participated in the pre-test judged the scale easy to understand and did not suggest changes. Discussion The Brazilian version of the IGDS9-SF showed adequate content validity and is available for researchers and clinicians, as well as for the investigation of additional psychometric characteristics.

A flow-injection preconcentration system using detection by the thermospray flame furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (FIA-TS-FF-AAS) is proposed. Cd2+ are adsorbed on avocado seed activated carbon (ASAC) packed into a cylindrical mini-column and eluted using HCl solutions for the detection system. A 25–1 fractional factorial and Doehlert matrix design were employed to determine the optimum conditions for cadmium preconcentration (pH 7.68, buffer concentration (Tris/Tris-HCl) of 0.023 mol L-1, eluent concentration (HCl) of 2.0 mol L-1, the adsorbent mass of 100.0 mg and preconcentration flow rate of 4.8 mL min-1). The preconcentration method presents linearity within the range of 0.41-15.00 µg L-1, limits of quantification and detection of 0.41 and 0.12 µg L-1, respectively, preconcentration factor of 10.7, consumption of index of 0.93 mL and sample throughput of 26 h-1. The precision assessed as the relative standard deviation (RSD) were found to be 0.48, 0.90 and 2.30% for inter-day precision (n = 2), and 0.30, 0.44 and 2.48% for intra-day precision (n = 6) for respective cadmium concentration of 0.50, 5.00 and 15.00 µg L-1. The proposed method was applied satisfactorily in samples of cigarette (62.84 ± 11.28 µg kg-1), human hair (69.61 ± 2.38 µg kg-1) and water samples [lake (0.65 ± 0.01 µg L-1), tap and mineral].

Abstract An updated synthesis of cyanobacteria and algae information is presented for Brazil aiming to refine the data gathered to date and evaluate the progress of the biodiversity knowledge about these organisms in the country since the publication of the Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos do Brasil. The results of 2015 showed an increase of 1,250 species (35.7%) when compared to 2010, reaching a total of 4,747 species. The most diverse classes in species number were the Bacillariophyceae, Conjugatophyceae, Florideophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Dinophyceae and Euglenophyceae. Bacillariophyceae and Cyanophyceae had the highest increase in species number in the five-year interval. The Southeast and South regions were the most diverse, however, the Northeast, with the states of Piauí and Sergipe, and the Central-west region, with Mato Grosso, Goiás and Distrito Federal, also stood out in the national algal biodiversity scenario. Despite the shortage of taxonomists and limited infrastructure, the results showed a significant improvement in the knowledge regarding the diversity of cyanobacteria and algae in the country during the study period, starting to even out regional geographical differences caused by subsampling.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

With the objective to assess whether repeated non-toxic doses of sodium monofluoroacetate (MFA) induce resistance to poisoning by this compound, 18 sheep were randomly divided into two experimental groups of nine animals each. Sheep from Group 1 ingested non-lethal increasing doses of MFA for six periods: 0.05mg/kg for 5 days; 0.08mg/kg for 4 days; 0.08mg/kg for 4 days; 0.1mg/kg for 3 days; 0.1mg/kg for 3 days and 0.25mg/kg for 3 days. Between the first and second period of administration and between the second and third period the animals did not receive MFA for 10 consecutive days, between the third and fourth period and during the remaining periods of administration the sheep were left 15 days without ingesting MFA. Group 2 was not adapted to the ingestion of MFA and received a single dose of 1mg/kg of MFA at the same time that Group 1 was challenged. After challenge, seven sheep of Group 1 showed clinical signs of poisoning and one sheep recovered. In Group 2, all animals showed clinical signs of poisoning by MFA, however two sheep recovered. The mortality rate was 66.6% in Group 1 and 77.7% for Group 2. These results suggest that repeated administration of non-toxic doses of MFA does not protect against acute poisoning by this compound; therefore other alternatives of prophylaxis for poisoning by plants containing MFA should be searched, mainly the use of intraruminal bacteria that hydrolyze MFA.

Compostonat®, Rotenat® e Neempro proporcionaram r i negativas, declinando a população de A. gossypii. Natuneem®, Neemseto® e o óleo essencial de F. vulgare apresentaram r i positivas, aumentando a população.

(Arq Bras Cardiol. 2012; [online].ahead print, PP.0-0)
BACKGROUND: Despite superior diagnostic accuracy of high-sensitivity cardiac troponins, their prognostic value has not been validated against conventional cardiac troponins. OBJECTIVE: To test the prognostic value of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I (hs-cTnI), compared with conventional cardiac troponin T (cTnT) in the setting of non-ST elevation acute coronary syndromes. METHODS: At hospital admission, a plasma sample was collected from 103 consecutive patients with unstable angina or non-ST elevation acute myocardial infarction. In this sample, troponin was measured both by hs-cTnI and cTnT methods. Their prognostic value was compared as to the occurrence of major cardiovascular events, defined as a combination of death, nonfatal acute myocardial infarction or refractory unstable angina during hospitalization. RESULTS: During median hospitalization of 8 days (interquartile range = 5 - 11), the incidence of cardiovascular events was 10% (5 deaths, 3 non-fatal myocardial infarctions and 2 non-fatal refractory anginas). High-sensitivity troponin I significantly predicted cardiovascular events, with a C-statistics of 0.73 (95% CI = 0.59 - 0.87), similarly to cTnT (0.70; 95% CI = 0.55 - 0.84) - P = 0.75. The definition of positive cardiac marker that provided the best prognostic accuracy was hs-cTnI > 0.055 µg/L and cTnT > 0.010 µg/L, with equal sensitivity of 90% and specificity of 52% for both assays. Positive hs-cTnI was associated with 17% incidence of events, compared with 2% in patients with negative hs-cTnI (P = 0.02). CONCLUSION: High-sensitivity troponin I predicts cardiovascular events similarly to conventional troponin T in the setting of non-ST-elevation ACS.
OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the efficacy of cumulative doses (CDs) of 131I-iodide therapy (RIT) in differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The probability of progressive disease according to CDs was evaluated in patients < 45 years old and > 45 years old and correlated to tumor-node-metastasis (TNM), thyroglobulin values, histological types and variants, age, and zduration of the disease. RESULTS: At the end of a follow-up period of 69 ± 56 months, 85 out of 150 DTC patients submitted to fixed doses RIT had no evidence of disease, 47 had stable disease and 18 had progressive disease. Higher CDs were used in the more aggressive variants (p < 0.0001), higher TNM stages (p < 0.0001), and follicular carcinomas (p = 0.0034). Probability of disease progression was higher with CDs > 600 mCi in patients > 45 years old and with CDs > 800 mCi in patients < 45 years. CONCLUSION: Although some patients may still respond to high CDs, the impact of further RIT should be carefully evaluated and other treatment strategies may be warranted.
