Abstract Large quantities of residual cooking oil are being increasingly generated in various sectors, as it is often improperly disposed of and causes serious environmental problems. A commonly used alternative is the use of lipases in enzymatic hydrolysis, since it is rather attractive to several sectors, in addition to allowing the use of products generated thereof, such as: free fatty acids, diacylglycerols, monoacylglycerols and free glycerol, moreover, it is capable of operating in mild temperature and pressure conditions. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate alternatives for the hydrolysis of residual frying oil by evaluating the efficiency of different types of supports and heating systems using free and immobilized forms of lipase from Burkholderia cepacia (BCL) and Porcine pancreas (PPL) as biocatalyst. Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), niobium oxide (Nb2O5) and chitosan (CHIT) were evaluated as support for immobilizing BCL and PPL lipases, and superior results were found regarding the hydrolytic activity of immobilization derivatives using PHB and Nb2O5. Among the heating systems under evaluation, the highest percentage of residual oil hydrolysis was found using the ultrasound system for both free and immobilized lipases, reaching 57.91% hydrolysis for lipases immobilized on Nb2O5 and 61.11% hydrolysis for the derivative immobilized on PHB. The operational stability of both biocatalysts was evaluated using similar half-life time values for both. Thus, it was observed that the ultrasound system was efficient in improving lipase performance in the hydrolysis of free fatty acids, once this unconventional heating system is quite promising for accelerating such enzymatic reactions.

Abstract The objective of this study was to reduce the effects of cryoinjury caused in bovine semen by cryopreservation. Ejaculates were collected from Nellore bulls and subjected to freezing in C (control), ozone (15, 30, and 60 µg mL-1 of ozone), quercetin (25, 50, and 100 µg mL-1 of quercetin), and carnosine groups (100, 200, and 300 ng mL-1 of carnosine). Samples were evaluated post-thaw (M0) and post-rapid thermoresistance test (M30) for sperm kinetics (total motility, progressive motility, curvilinear speed, linearity and amplitude of lateral head displacement) and cell structure viability (plasma membrane integrity, acrosomal integrity, mitochondrial potential, membrane fluidity, and lipid peroxidation). There were no differences (P > 0.05) between the control, quercetin, and carnosine-treated groups for the parameters evaluated at M0 and M30. In turn, supplementation with ozone resulted in lower values for sperm kinetics (P < 0.05) and lower mitochondrial potential at M30 (P < 0.05). Quercetin and carnosine at the concentrations used did not promote significant gains in frozen semen, nor did they demonstrate cytotoxicity. We expected to obtain positive results with the use of ozone. Nonetheless, the addition was harmful to the parameters of sperm kinetics, and its effect was not observed as a possible pro-antioxidant. We believe that the fact that the gas did not harm the sperm structure opens avenues for tests with lower dosages, since, by reducing its concentration, we could minimize the damage to sperm kinetics.

High Chromium Cast Iron (HCCI) has demonstrated its effectiveness as a potential material for applications in severe environments due to its remarkable wear resistance attributed to the volumetric fraction of carbides in the microstructure. This study investigates a novel high-alloyed composition of white cast iron named High Entropy White Cast Iron (HEWCI), which merges the concepts of HCCI and high entropy alloys. Specifically designed chemical compositions incorporating Vanadium (V), Molybdenum (Mo), and Nickel (Ni) were employed to enhance its wear resistance properties. The solidification path, microstructural characterization, and wear responses of HEWCI were evaluated. XRD and SEM techniques were carried out for characterization purposes. Linearly reciprocating ball-on-flat sliding wear tests were conducted using a high-frequency reciprocation rig (HFRR) tribometer, assessing wear volume, linear wear rate, specific wear rate (κ), and coefficient of friction (COF). The results revealed microstructural refinement and precipitation of new carbides through V, Ni, and Mo additions. This approach demonstrates that adding carbide-forming elements and refining the microstructure are promising strategies for enhancing wear performance in HEWCI alloys.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Tissue repair and skin wound healing are complex processes that involve a series of dynamic events, including coagulation, inflammation, granulation tissue formation, wound contraction and tissue remodeling. The need to care for patients with difficulties in wound healing is a growing challenge and requires innovative strategies. One approach that stands out in the treatment of these injuries is low-power laser therapy. This study aims to demonstrate the applicability and results of a low-power laser therapy protocol in the management of skin wound healing. Methods: This is a retrospective case review study reporting the use of laser in the treatment of skin wounds in a single center. Results: We evaluated the results of the implementation of this low-power laser therapy protocol and reported five cases of patients with skin wounds that did not improve with conventional treatment. The lesions were located in different places, with lesions on the trunk, upper limb and lower limb. The five cases showed a good response to laser therapy, evolving with wound healing in a short period of time, with an average healing time of 48 days. Conclusion: It is concluded that low power laser therapy when applied to skin wounds suggests a beneficial, promising action and has the potential to increase the therapeutic options available to the surgeon, however as we report a number of five cases, further studies are needed for check laser efficiency on wounds.

RESUMO Introdução: O reparo tecidual e a cicatrização de feridas cutâneas são processos complexos que envolvem uma série de eventos dinâmicos, incluindo coagulação, inflamação, formação de tecido de granulação, contração da ferida e remodelação tecidual. A necessidade de cuidar de pacientes com dificuldades na cicatrização de feridas é um desafio crescente e requer estratégias inovadoras. Uma abordagem que se destaca no tratamento dessas lesões é a laserterapia de baixa potência. Este estudo tem como objetivo demonstrar a aplicabilidade e os resultados de um protocolo de laserterapia de baixa potência no manejo da cicatrização de feridas cutâneas. Métodos: Trata-se de estudo retrospectivo de revisão de casos relatando o uso de laser no tratamento de feridas cutâneas em um centro único. Resultados: Avaliamos os resultados do uso de laserterapia de baixa potência e relatamos cinco casos de pacientes com feridas cutânea que não apresentaram melhora com o tratamento convencional. As lesões eram localizadas em sítios diversos, com lesão no tronco, membro superior e membro inferior. Os cinco casos apresentaram uma boa resposta com a terapia a laser, evoluindo com a cicatrização das feridas em um curto período de tempo, com período médio de cicatrização de 48 dias. Conclusão: Conclui-se que a laserterapia de baixa potência quando aplicada sobre feridas cutâneas sugere uma ação benéfica, promissora e tem um potencial para aumentar as opções terapêuticas disponíveis para o cirurgião, porém, como relatamos um número de cinco casos, há necessidade de mais estudos para verificar a eficiência do laser em feridas.

ABSTRACT Flower stems of the Heliconiaceae family are gaining more and more space in the Brazilian market of ornamental plants and further knowledge about quality, productivity, and postharvest management is necessary. The objective of the present study was to evaluate heliconiaceae cultivated in full sun in the central-west region of Brazil in terms of agronomic traits and to determine the post-harvest durability of floral stems submitted to cold storage. Accessions of Heliconia bihai cultivar Caribea, H. bihai cultivar Iris Red, and H. rauliniana were evaluated. Quantitative and qualitative morphological characteristics and the total number of flower stems produced and number of marketable stems were obtained. Postharvest longevity was tested in a cold chamber at 16 ºC and 19 ºC and at ambient temperature of 26 ºC. Morphological characteristics such as the length, diameter and fresh mass of flower stems, inflorescence length, and postharvest durability of the inflorescences were the most affected. The most important variables were the quality of flower stems, productivity of marketable stems, and postharvest durability. The studied heliconias presented agronomic characters within the commercialization standards, highlighting H. bihai (Caribea) which presented the highest productivity. The best storage temperature for all accessions evaluated was 16 °C.

RESUMO: O reaproveitamento de camas aviárias na criação de frangos de corte é uma prática muito utilizada no Brasil. Essa prática reduz custos de produção e contribui na conservação do meio ambiente. As técnicas atuais utilizadas na desinfecção de camas aviárias reaproveitadas, como adição de cal, enleiramento e lona na superfície, não garantem a eliminação de microrganismos patogênicos porque não geram quantidade suficiente de amônia. O gás amônia, em concentrações elevadas, tem efeito biocida. Bactérias Gram negativas, como as Salmonelas e Escherichia coli, podem ser transmitidas de um lote para outro através do reaproveitamento da cama, ocasionando prejuízos para a saúde das aves e dos humanos que consomem alimentos contaminados por estes agentes. Este trabalho avaliou a eficácia do método lona na superfície com injeção de gás amônia no controle de microrganismos Gram negativos. Os resultados obtidos demostraram que esse método controlou os microrganismos Gram negativos num período de 48 horas em camas de frangos de corte reaproveitadas. Assim, essa nova metodologia de desinfecção de camas de aviário permitirá sua reutilização de forma prática e segura, melhorando a saúde das aves e dos consumidores dos produtos avícolas.

ABSTRACT: The current techniques used in the disinfection of reused poultry litter, such as lime addition, windrowing and plastic cover on the surface, do not guarantee the elimination of pathogenic microorganisms, causing damage to the environment and animal health. Gram negative bacteria, i.e., Salmonella and Escherichia coli, can be transmitted from one batch to another through reused litter, causing health damage to broilers and humans that consume food contaminated by these agents. Our study assessed the effectiveness of the methods plastic cover on the surface (PCS) and plastic cover on the surface with ammonia gas injection (PCSAI) in the control of Gram negative bacteria. The results obtained, both in laboratory conditions (Experiment 1) and in the field (Experiment 2), demonstrate that the method PCSAI with 0.22% ammonia gas had a significant reduction (P<0.05) of Gram negative bacteria in the period of 48 hours This new methodology for disinfecting poultry litter will allow its reuse in a practical and safe way, improving the preservation of the environment, of the health of broilers and consumers of poultry products.

RESUMO A adaptação edafoclimática das variedades e/ou clones de cana-de-açúcar pode garantir maior produtividade de forragem para a alimentação animal. Para tanto, foi elaborado um experimento no campus de Seropédica da Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro, para avaliação de duas variedades (RB867515 e RB969017) e dois clones (RB058046 e RB098022) de cana-de-açúcar, sob um delineamento de blocos casualizados, com sete repetições. Foram avaliadas variáveis biométricas, perfilhos m-1, índice de área foliar (IAF), Grau Brix e índice de maturação (IM), além das produtividades de forragem e total durante o cultivo do ciclo de cana-planta. O plantio foi realizado em 08/10/2018 e a colheita em 13/09/2019, aos 323 dias após plantio (DAP). Os dados foram analisados pelo software R, sob blocos ao acaso, e medidas repetidas no tempo para as variáveis biométricas, perfilhos m-1, IAF, Grau Brix e IM. As médias foram comparadas pelo teste Tukey (p < 0,10). O clone RB098022 apresentou 20,2% mais perfilhos m-1 que ambas as variedades. Aos 296 DAP ambos os clones e a variedade RB969017 apresentaram IM maiores que 0,85, caracterizando-os como de ciclo mais precoce do que a variedade RB867515 (IM = 0,91 aos 323 DAP). Maiores produtividades e semelhantes de forragem e total foram verificadas para o clone RB098022 e a variedade RB867515 (médias de 141,6 e 151,2 Mg ha-1, respectivamente). Todos os materiais genéticos se adaptaram às condições edafoclimáticas durante o cultivo decana-planta, sendo recomendado a utilização do clone RB098022 e da variedade RB867515 para a alimentação animal na região da Baixada Fluminense. ABSTRACT The edaphoclimatic adaptation of sugarcane varieties and clones can ensure higher forage productivity for animal feed. An experiment was conducted at the Seropédica campus of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro for the evaluation of two varieties (RB867515 and RB969017) and two clones (RB058046 and RB098022) of sugarcane under a randomized block design with seven replications. Biometric variables, tillers m-1, leaf area index (LAI), Brix degree, maturation index (MI), as well as forage and total yields, were evaluated during the cultivation of the sugarcane-plant cycle. Sugarcanes were planted on 10/08/2018 and harvested on 09/13/2019, totaling 323 days after planting (DAP). The data were analyzed using the R software, under randomized blocks and repeated measurements in time for biometric variables, tillers m-1, LAI, Brix Degree and MI. Means were compared using the Tukey test (p < 0.10). Clone RB098022 presented 20.2% more tillers m-1 than both the other varieties. At 296 DAP, both clones and the variety RB969017 presented MI higher than 0.85, indicating them as an earlier cycle than the variety RB867515 (MI = 0.91 to 323 DAP). Higher and similar forage and total yields were obtained with clone RB098022 and variety RB867515 (means 141.6 and 151.2 Mg ha-1, respectively). All sugarcanes adapted to edaphoclimatic conditions during plant cane cultivation, and it is recommended to use the clone RB098022 and the variety RB867515 for animal feed in the Baixada Fluminense region.

Abstract Sporothrix spp. are the major dimorphic fungus associated with a type of subcutaneous mycosis, sporotrichosis. The limitation of antifungal availability and the past reports of in vitro resistance of Sporothrix spp. clinical isolates makes it important to search for new compounds with antifungal activities. In this study, we therefore evaluate the in vitro activities of complexes coordinated with Co(II) and cobalt chloride hexahydrate against clinical isolates of Sporothrix spp. Broth microdilution test was performed as per M38-A2 from CLSI (2008) in duplicate for 31 clinical isolates of Sporothrix spp. (27 S. brasiliensis e 04 S. schenckii stricto sensu). The antifungal activities of the complexes coordinated with Co(II) and cobalt chloride hexahydrate were detected at a concentration range of 32-128 µg/mL for all isolates. None of the compounds demonstrated any cytotoxicity (to macrophage cells) at the concentration of 200 µg/mL. The activity against Sporothrix spp. recorded in this study instigate the continuity of experimental studies with Co(II) to search for the mechanisms of antifungal action as well as to evaluate its interaction with the commercial antifungal drugs.

Resumo Este artigo analisa a qualidade de legendas interlinguais traduzidas automaticamente e pós-editadas no par linguístico EN/PT-BR. A análise aplicou o FAR model, um Modelo de Avaliação da Qualidade de Tradução, às legendas em PT-BR do trailer do filme The Red Sea Diving Resort, no Brasil: Missão no Mar Vermelho, correlacionando-o com dados empíricos coletados com tradutores (avaliação da qualidade) e com a audiência (recepção). Os dados de recepção foram coletados com alunos da graduação, que foram divididos em dois grupos: o grupo controle, que assistiu ao trailer com as legendas disponibilizadas pela Netflix; e o grupo experimental, que assistiu ao trailer com as legendas pós-editadas. Os dados de avaliação da qualidade foram coletados com tradutores que assistiram ao trailer com as legendas pós-editadas. Os instrumentos de coleta foram uma escala Likert de 5 pontos, um questionário e protocolos verbais guiados. Os dados coletados com os participantes foram correlacionados com as categorizações de erros do FAR model (Equivalência Funcional, Aceitabilidade e Leiturabilidade). Os resultados indicaram que as legendas pós-editadas possuem qualidade boa em termos de significado e normas da língua-alvo; entretanto, os parâmetros técnicos tiveram qualidade inferior, o que afetou a apreciação do trailer conforme relatado pela maioria da audiência. Devido à amostra reduzida, são necessários estudos empíricos adicionais para a obtenção de padrões mais sólidos de avaliação da qualidade de legendas pós-editadas.

Abstract This paper analyzes the quality of machine-translated interlingual subtitles, which were post-edited in the language pair EN/PT-BR. Our analyses applied the FAR model, a Translation Quality Assessment Model, to the PT-BR subtitles of The Red Sea Diving Resort movie trailer, correlating it to empirical data collected with translators (quality assessment) and audience (reception). Reception data was collected with undergraduate students, which were divided into two groups: the control group that watched the subtitled trailer available on Netflix; and the experimental group that watched the trailer with post-edited subtitles. Quality data was collected with translators and they watched the trailer with post-edited subtitles. We used a 5-point Likert-type scale, a questionnaire and a guided think-aloud protocol to collect our data. Data collected with both translators and students were correlated with the FAR model error scores (Functional Equivalence, Acceptability and Readability). Our results indicate that the post-edited subtitles had good quality in terms of meaning and target language norms; however, the technical parameters had lower quality, which affected the trailer appreciation as reported by most of the audience. Due to the small sample size, further empirical studies are required to obtain solid standards for assessing the quality of post-edited subtitles.

BACKGROUND The emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants has become a major concern contributing to increased morbidity and mortality worldwide. OBJECTIVES Here we describe the replacement of the Gamma variant of concern (VOC) with Delta in the western Brazilian Amazon. METHODS In this study, we analysed 540 SARS-CoV-2 positive samples determined by qualitative real-time RT-PCR selected in the state of Rondônia between June and December 2021. The positive cohort was sequenced through next-generation sequencing (NGS) and each sample was quantified using real-time RT-qPCR, the whole genome sequence was obtained, SARS-CoV-2 lineages were classified using the system Pango and the maximum likelihood (ML) method was used to conduct phylogenetic analyses. FINDINGS A total of 540 high-quality genomes were obtained, where the Delta VOC showed the highest prevalence making up 72%, with strain AY.43 being the most abundant, while the Gamma VOC was present in 28%, where the P.1 strain was the most frequent. In this study population, only 32.96% (178/540) had completed the vaccination schedule. MAIN CONCLUSIONS This study highlighted the presence of Gamma and Delta variants of SARS-CoV-2 in RO. Furthermore, we observed the replacement of the Gamma VOC with the Delta VOC and its lineages.

Esta pesquisa qualitativa buscou compreender as experiências desses médicos brasileiros em seus primeiros meses de trabalho. Realizou-se análise temática dos conteúdos provenientes de entrevistas semiestruturadas, tendo como fio condutor os princípios da Atenção Primária à Saúde (APS) e como referenciais teóricos o saber da experiência e as políticas de saúde indígena. Emergiram três categorias relacionadas ao cuidado em saúde indígena: processo de trabalho, encontro entre culturas e formação médica. As experiências mostraram-se complexas e heterogêneas, com demonstração de satisfação e aprendizados. Conclui-se que o cuidado em saúde indígena demanda um olhar singular e diferenciado para os princípios da APS, devendo-se construir competências para atuação médica nesse contexto.

The More Doctors Program expanded access to medical care in the Brazilian indigenous contexts, as in the Yanomami Land (TY). This qualitative research sought to understand the experience of the Brazilian doctors in the TY in their first months of work since November 2018. The research conducted a thematic analysis of the contents from semi-structured interviews, having as its common thread the principles of Primary Health Care (PHC) and as theoretical frameworks, experiential knowledge and indigenous health policies. Three categories related to indigenous health care emerged: work process; encounter between cultures; medical training. The experience proved to be complex and heterogeneous, demonstrating satisfaction and learning. The study concludes that indigenous health care demands a singular and differentiated outlook at the principles of PHC, and that competencies for medical practice in this context must be built.

El Programa Más Médicos amplió el acceso a la asistencia médica en los contextos indígenas brasileños, como en la Tierra Yanomami (TY). Hasta noviembre de 2018, en la TY había exclusivamente médicos cubanos, cuando fueron substituidos por brasileños. La investigación cualitativa buscó comprender la experiencia de esos médicos brasileños en sus primeros meses de trabajo. Abstract: SCS125 is a late-maturing cultivar with a normal plant type, good resistance to lodging, resistance to blast, high yield, grains with long-thin shape, and good sensory and cooking properties either for parboiling or white rice. SCS125 has better yield and milling quality than SCS116 Satoru and SCS122 Miura.

RESUMO Objetivo: avaliar a qualidade de vida dos idosos, compreendendo as representações sociais sobre quedas. Métodos: pesquisa de método misto convergente, realizada em domicílio, tendo como amostra 134 idosos. Utilizou-se questionário estruturado abrangendo variáveis sociodemográficas e presença de fatores que indicassem fragilidade e risco para queda. Para avaliação da qualidade de vida, utilizou-se Medical Outcomes Study Short-Form 36 e Teoria das Representações Sociais, abordagem estrutural de Abric, sendo os dados tratados por dicionário de termos equivalentes, processados no software Evoc 2000, convergindo analiticamente segundo Neuman. Resultados: identificou-se comprometimento da qualidade de vida nos aspectos físico, emocional e de capacidade funcional. Os elementos do possível núcleo central foram queda, medo e machucado-osso-quebrado. Considerações finais: prejuízos na qualidade de vida podem contribuir no aumento do número de quedas, que se mostrou um evento presente na vida do idoso através das evocações. Compreender as demandas individuais do idoso permite o planejamento de ações.

ABSTRACT Objective: to assess elderly people’s quality of life, understanding the social representations of falls. Methods: a convergent mixed methods research carried out at homes, with a sample of 134 elderly people. A structured questionnaire was used, covering sociodemographic variables and factors that indicated frailty and risk of falling. For quality of life assessment, Medical Outcomes Study Short-Form 36 and Theory of Social Representations, Abric’s structural approach were used, with data treated by dictionary of equivalent terms, processed in Evoc 2000, converging analytically according to Neuman. Results: quality of life impairment was identified in terms of physical, emotional and functional capacity. The elements of the possible central nucleus were fall, fear, and bruised-broken-bone. Final considerations: quality of life impairment can contribute to increase the number of falls, which has been shown to be an event present in elderly people’s lives through evocations. Understanding elderly people’s individual demands allows planning actions.

RESUMEN Objetivo: evaluar la calidad de vida de los ancianos, entendiendo las representaciones sociales de las caídas. Métodos: investigación de método mixto convergente, realizada en el domicilio, con una muestra de 134 ancianos. Se utilizó un cuestionario estructurado, cubriendo variables sociodemográficas y la presencia de factores indicativos de fragilidad y riesgo de caídas. Para la evaluación de la calidad de vida se utilizó el Medical Outcomes Study Short-Form 36 y Theory of Social Representations, enfoque estructural de Abric, con datos tratados por diccionario de términos equivalentes, procesados en el software Evoc 2000, convergiendo analíticamente según Neuman. Resultados: se identificó deterioro de la calidad de vida en los aspectos de capacidad física, emocional y funcional. Los elementos del posible núcleo central caían, miedo y huesos rotos, magullados. Consideraciones finales: las deficiencias en la calidad de vida pueden contribuir al aumento del número de caídas, que resultó ser un evento presente en la vida de los ancianos a través de evocaciones. ABSTRACT The objective was to determine the optimal dehydrated passion fruit pulp replacing ground corn in diets for goat kids. We used 24 crossbred castrated goat kids with initial body weight of 26.6±0.3 kg. The experimental period was 23 days, with 15 days of adjustment and acclimatization (mostly to the installation and diet). Kids were distributed in a randomized experimental design with four treatments of 0, 80, 160, or 240 g/kg of dehydrated passion fruit residue as a supplementary inclusion in the dry matter (DM) content of the diet. The statistical model considered the fixed effect of the included amount of residue from dehydrated passion fruit. Analysis of variance was conducted using the PROC GLM of SAS. Intakes of DM and total digestible nutrients (TDN) were not affected by residue inclusion. However, neutral detergent fiber (NDF) intake increased linearly. The inclusion linearly decreased intake of ether extract (EE) and non-fibrous carbohydrates (NFC). Crude protein (CP) intake was quadratically affected, with a greater value under treatment of 160 g/kg passion fruit. Dry matter and NFC digestibility decreased linearly with the amount of passion fruit included in diet. Fecal N and total N excretion values (in g/d and %N intake) increased linearly. Nitrogen balance and N retained values showed a quadratic increase, with greater values under the 160 g/kg inclusion. Time spent ruminating, DM and NDF eating efficiency, and g DM/bolus chewed were affected quadratically by inclusion of passion fruit residue. The replacement of ground corn with dehydrated passion fruit residue at a level of 160 g/kg is recommended for diets of goat kids to improve their NDF and CP intake and their N balance without affecting DM and TDN intakes.
