Resumo A região Neotropical se destaca por possuir a maior riqueza de anfíbios do mundo. Cerca de 625 espécies de anuros são conhecidas na Mata Atlântica. As regiões montanhosas do sudeste do Brasil, denominadas Serra do Mar e Serra da Mantiqueira, são áreas muito importantes para a diversidade de anuros no país, pois abrigam estratos remanescentes da Mata Atlântica que possuem diversas espécies endêmicas. O presente estudo visa ampliar o conhecimento sobre os anuros da Serra da Mantiqueira, especificamente das altas bacias dos rios Preto e Grande. A área de estudo compreendeu 10 centros amostrais. Realizamos 38 campanhas, com duração de dois dias cada. Nesse período, utilizamos a busca ativa como pistas visuais e auditivas. A busca passiva foi composta por armadilhas de queda. Análises bioacústicas foram usadas para determinar as espécies crípticas. A suficiência do esforço amostral foi estimada através da curva de acumulação usando Bootstrap e Jackknife-1 como estimadores. Durante o estudo foram encontradas 55 espécies, sendo 40 delas na bacia do Rio Preto e 44 na bacia do Rio Grande. Vinte e nove espécies foram encontradas em ambas as bacias. A família Hylidae foi predominante, seguida por Leptodactylidae. Além de espécies da Mata Atlântica, o local abriga componentes típicos do bioma Cerrado e brejos de altitude com simpatrias inesperadas. Este inventário amplia a área de ocorrência de Scinax duartei, espécie considerada ameaçada. Embora adjacente ao parque nacional mais antigo do Brasil, a composição de espécies de anuros dessa área era desconhecida até então.

Abstract The Neotropical zone stands out for having the greatest richness of amphibians in the world. About 625 species of anurans are known on Atlantic Forest. The southeastern mountainous regions of Brazil called Serra do Mar and Serra da Mantiqueira, are very important areas for the diversity of anurans in the country because they shelter remaining strata of the Atlantic Forest that have several endemic species. The present study aims to expand the knowledge about the Serra da Mantiqueira anurans, specifically from the Rio Preto and Rio Grande upper basins. The study area comprised 10 sample centers. We realized 38 campaigns, lasting two days each. During this period, we used active search as visual and auditory cues. The passive search was comprised of pitfall traps. Bioacoustic analyses were used to determine the cryptic species. The sufficiency of the sampling effort was estimated through the accumulation curve using Bootstrap and Jackknife-1 as estimators. During the study 55 species were found, 40 of them in the basin of the Rio Preto, and 44 in the basin of the Rio Grande. Twenty-nine species were found in both areas. The Hylidae family was predominant, followed by Leptodactylidae. In addition to species of the Atlantic Forest, the place houses typical components of the Cerrado biome and altitudinal swamps with unexpected sympatries. This inventory expands the area of occurrence of Scinax duartei, a species considered threatened. Although adjacent to the oldest national park in Brazil, the composition of anuran species of this area was unknown until then.

Resumo A fertilização com lodo de esgoto desidratado pode acelerar o processo de recuperação de áreas degradadas devido à concentração de nutrientes, favorecendo o desenvolvimento de plantas pioneiras tais como Acacia auriculiformis A. Cunn. ex Beth (Fabales: Fabaceae) e de seus insetos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os insetos mastigadores, polinizadores e predadores e seus índices e relações ecológicas em plantas de A. auriculiformis fertilizadas com lodo de esgoto desidratado, em área degradada, durante 24 meses. O delineamento foi inteiramente casualizados com dois tratamentos (com e sem adubação com lodo de esgoto desidratado) e 24 repetições (uma repetição = uma planta). O maior número de insetos mastigadores Parasyphraea sp. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Nasutitermes sp. (Blattodea: Termitidae) e Tropidacris collaris (Stoll, 1813) (Orthoptera: Romaleidae), de desfolha, e do índice ecológico abundância de Coleoptera e de Orthoptera foram maiores em plantas de A. auriculiformis fertilizadas do que nas não fertilizadas com lodo de esgoto desidratado. Plantas de A. auriculiformis, com maior quantidade de galhos/árvore, apresentaram maiores abundâncias de Coleoptera e Orthoptera, riqueza de espécies de insetos polinizadores, desfolha e números de Parasyphraea sp. e T. collaris, e as com maior folhas/galho os de riqueza de espécies de Coleoptera e Diabrotica speciosa (Germar, 1824) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). Por tanto, a utilização de A. auriculiformis, adubada com lodo de esgoto desidratado, é promissora na recuperação de áreas degradadas devido ao aumento dos índices ecológicos de insetos mastigadores, polinizadores e aranhas na área.

Abstract Fertilization with dehydrated sewage sludge can speed up the recovery process of degraded areas due to nutrients concentration, favoring the development of pioneer plants such as Acacia auriculiformis A. Cunn. ex Beth (Fabales: Fabaceae) and the emergence of insects. This study aimed the evaluation of chewing, pollinating insects, predators, their ecological indices and relationships on A. auriculiformis plants fertilized with dehydrated sewage sludge. The experimental design was completely randomized with two treatments (with and without dehydrated sewage sludge) and 24 repetitions. The prevalence of chewing insects Parasyphraea sp. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Nasutitermes sp. (Blattodea: Termitidae), and Tropidacris collaris (Stoll, 1813) (Orthoptera: Romaleidae), defoliation, and ecological indices of abundance of Coleoptera and Orthoptera were observed on fertilized A. auriculiformis. Acacia auriculiformis plants, with a superior number of branches/tree, revealed greater abundance of Coleoptera and Orthoptera, species richness of pollinating insects, defoliation, numbers of Parasyphraea sp. and T. collaris. The ones with larger leaves/branches displayed greater abundance of species richness of Coleoptera and Diabrotica speciosa (Germar, 1824) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). Therefore, the use of A. auriculiformis plants, fertilized with dehydrated sewage sludge, is promising in the recovery of degraded areas due to the ecological indices increase of chewing and pollinators insects and spiders in the analyzed area.

Abstract Sapindus saponaria L. (Sapindaceae) is a pioneer species used in programs to recover degraded areas. The trees also assist in the pest control of some insects due to the composition of saponins on their leaves. In addition, these chemical components are important to pharmaceutical product production. The objective was to evaluate the impact of spatial distribution, indices and ecological relationship of arthropods on S. saponaria leaves to preserve the balance of biodiversity. Aggregated distribution of arthropods was observed; the numbers of phytophagous arthropods were higher on the adaxial leaf face than on the abaxial part. Only Aleyrodidae (Hemiptera) had a higher presence on the abaxial leaf face of S. saponaria saplings. Abundance, diversity, and species richness of natural enemies correlated positively with phytophagous and pollinators insects. On the other hand, the number of Lyriomyza sp. mines correlated negatively with Pseudomyrmex termitarius (Smith) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). All this information can assist and guide integrated pest management programs.

Resumo Sapindus saponaria L. (Sapindaceae) é uma espécie pioneira utilizada em programas de recuperação de áreas degradadas. As árvores também auxiliam no controle de alguns insetos pragas devido à composição de saponinas em suas folhas. Além disso, esses componentes químicos são importantes para a produção de produtos farmacêuticos. O objetivo foi avaliar o impacto da distribuição espacial, índices e relações ecológicas de artrópodes nas folhas de S. saponaria, a fim de preservar o equilíbrio da biodiversidade. Observou-se distribuição agregada; os números de artrópodes fitófagos foram maiores na face adaxial da folha do que na parte abaxial. Apenas indivíduos de Aleyrodidae (Hemiptera), tiveram maior presença na face abaxial das folhas, em mudas de S. saponaria. Abundância, diversidade e riqueza de espécies de inimigos naturais correlacionaram-se positivamente com insetos fitófagos e polinizadores. Por outro lado, o número de minas de Lyriomyza sp. correlacionou-se negativamente com o de Pseudomyrmex termitarius (Smith) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). Todas essas informações podem ser usadas para auxiliar e orientar programas de manejo integrado de pragas.

Abstract Management programs and efficient techniques are necessary to recover degraded ecosystems. The sewage sludge is rich in nitrogen (N) and with the potential to fertilize Sapindus saponaria L. (Sapinales: Sapindaceae), used in the recovery of degraded areas; this can affect the insect fauna. The study's objective was to evaluate, for 24 months, the abundance of chewing insects, dipterans, pollinators, and predators on S. saponaria plants fertilized with or without dehydrated sewage sludge in a degraded area. The experimental design was completely randomized (with the same characteristics) with two treatments (with or without dehydrated sewage sludge) and 24 replicates, each with one plant. The abundance of Anastrepha sp. (Tephritidae), Cerotoma sp. (Chrysomelidae), Curculionidae, Musca domestica L. (Muscidae), Mantis religiosa L. (Mantodea: Mantidae), Oxyopidae, Salticidae, Tettigoniidae (Orthoptera), and Teudis sp. (Anyphaenidae) was higher on fertilized plants. The abundances of Teudis sp. and Tmarus sp. (Thomisidae) and M. religiosa and Teudis sp. were positively correlated with chewing insects and Diptera, respectively. The population increase of insects and spiders on S. saponaria plants fertilized with dehydrated sewage sludge (bigger crowns) has shown to be suitable for recovering degraded areas with a higher number of niches and better food quality, improving the ecological indices of the area.

Resumo A degradação de ecossistemas torna necessário programas de manejo e técnicas eficientes para recuperá-los. O lodo de esgoto é rico em nitrogênio e com potencial para adubar Sapindus saponaria L. (Sapinales: Sapindaceae), utilizada na recuperação de áreas degradadas, mas isto pode afetar a fauna de insetos. O objetivo foi avaliar, durante 24 meses, abundância de insetos mastigadores, dípteros, polinizadores e predadores em plantas de S. saponaria fertilizadas ou não com lodo de esgoto desidratado, em área degradada. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualisado com dois tratamentos (com ou sem lodo desidratado de esgoto) e 24 repetições, cada uma com uma planta. A abundância de Anastrepha sp. (Tephritidae), Cerotoma sp. (Chrysomelidae), Curculionidae, Musca domestica L. (Muscidae), Mantis religiosa L. (Mantodea: Mantidae), Oxyopidae, Salticidae, Tettigoniidae (Orthoptera) e Teudis sp. (Anyphaenidae) foi maior em plantas adubadas. A abundância de Teudis sp. e Tmarus sp. (Thomisidae) e M. religiosa e Teudis sp. foi, positivamente, correlacionada com as de insetos mastigadores e Diptera, respectivamente. O aumento populacional de insetos e aranhas em plantas de S. saponaria, adubada com lodo desidratado de esgoto (maiores copas), mostra ser adequado para a recuperação de áreas degradadas, tendo essas plantas um maior número de nichos e com alimento de melhor qualidade, melhorando os índices ecológicos na área.

Resumo Os terpenóides, também chamados terpenos ou isoprenóides, são uma família de produtos naturais encontrados em todos os organismos vivos. Muitas plantas são produtoras destes metabolitos secundários, que constituem uma grande parte dos óleos essenciais. Uma das características mais importantes é que os compostos são voláteis, têm odor e podem ser utilizados numa variedade de aplicações em diferentes segmentos industriais ou na medicina tradicional. O Brasil tem uma flora rica e diversificada que pode ser utilizada como fonte de pesquisa para a obtenção de novas moléculas. Dentro desta flora, vale a pena mencionar a Caatinga como um bioma exclusivamente brasileiro que possui plantas adaptadas a uma série de condições climáticas e, portanto, um armazém de compostos a serem descritos. As infecções fúngicas são doenças cada vez mais comuns, devido a isso existe uma grande procura de novos agentes com baixa toxicidade e efeitos secundários. Os cientistas devem procurar novas moléculas que exibam atividade antifúngica para o desenvolvimento de novos medicamentos contra as infecções fúngicas. Esta revisão visa analisar dados científicos dos principais estudos publicados que descrevem o uso de terpenóides e as suas aplicações biológicas como antifúngicos. isoprenóides vivos secundários essenciais voláteis tradicional portanto descritos comuns antifúngicos

Abstract Terpenoids, also named terpenes or isoprenoids, are a family of natural products found in all living organisms. Many plants produce terpenoids as secondary metabolites, and these make up a large part of essential oils. One of most important characteristic is that the compounds are volatile, have odor and can be used in a variety of applications in different industrial segments and traditional medicine. Brazil has a rich and diverse flora that can be used as a source of research for obtaining new molecules. Within the Brazilian flora, it is worth mentioning the Caatinga as an exclusively Brazilian biome where plants adapt to a specific series of weather conditions and therefore become a great storehouse of the terpenoid compounds to be described herein. Fungal infections have become increasingly common, and a great demand for new agents with low toxicity and side effects has thus emerged. Scientists must search for new molecules exhibiting antifungal activity to develop new drugs. This review aims to analyze scientific data from the principal published studies describing the use of terpenes and their biological applications as antifungals. The record of new occurrences of species is of paramount importance for the study of neotropical biodiversity, needing to be allied to a set of well-defined morphological characters. Hence, with a focus on Amazonian biodiversity, the object of our study is the genus Metaxya (Metaxyaceae). Metaxya C. Presl. has a wide distribution in Tropical America and in Brazil are recorded four of the six recognized species in the genus: M. lanosa A. R. Sm. & Tuomisto, M. rostrata (Kunth) C.Presl, M. scalaris Tuomisto & G.G.Cárdenas and M. parkeri (Hook. & Grev.) J. Sm. Thus, our aim was to revisit and look for diagnostic morphological traits for each species, adding one more point of view of species recognition, therefore, contribute to the understanding of the geographic distribution of this group. To achieve these aims, around 1,450 Metaxya samples deposited in the herbaria of national and foreign institutions were analyzed. This work presents brief morphological descriptions of species occurring in the Brazilian Amazon, comments on the morphological differences between species and their phylogenetic relationships. Additionally, we provide an identification key, new occurrences of M. rostrata for the States of Rondônia and Roraima, also M. scalaris for the Antilles and the first citation of M. parkeri for the Cerrado biome. Finally, we indicate here an isolectotype of M. parkeri in the collection of the Kew Botanical Garden (K).

O registro de novas ocorrências de espécies é de suma importância para o estudo da biodiversidade neotropical, precisando estar aliado a um conjunto de caracteres morfológicos bem definidos. Nesse sentido, com foco na biodiversidade Amazônica, o objeto do nosso estudo é o gênero Metaxya C. Presl. (Metaxyaceae). Este gênero apresenta uma ampla distribuição na América Tropical e no Brasil há relato de ocorrência de quatro das seis espécies atualmente reconhecidas no gênero: M. lanosa A. R. Sm. & Tuomisto, M. rostrata (Kunth) C.Presl, M. scalaris Tuomisto & G.G.Cárdenas e M. parkeri (Hook. & Grev.) J. Sm.. Assim, nosso objetivo foi revisitar e buscar características morfológicas diagnósticas de cada espécie que sejam mais intuitivas e que adicione mais um ponto de vista acerca do reconhecimento das espécies, e assim contribuir no entendimento da distribuição geográfica desse grupo. Para isso, foram analisadas cerca de 1.450 exsicatas de Metaxya depositadas nos herbários de instituições nacionais e do exterior. Neste trabalho são apresentadas breves descrições morfológicas das espécies ocorrentes na Amazônia brasileira, comentários sobre as diferenças morfológicas entre as espécies e suas relações filogenéticas. Adicionalmente, apresentamos uma chave de identificação, além de novas ocorrências de M. rostrata para os Estados de Rondônia e Roraima, de M. scalaris para as Antilhas e a primeira citação de M. parkeri para o bioma Cerrado. Também é indicado aqui um isolectotipo de M. parkeri na coleção do Jardim Botânico do Kew (K).

ABSTRACT Objectives: Currently, not much is known about the interactions between voice and growth hormone (GH). We have described large kindred with isolated GH deficiency (IGHD) due to a GHRH receptor mutation, resulting in severe short stature and high-pitched voice. These IGHD individuals have little interest in GH treatment, as they consider themselves “short long-lived people”, rather than patients. Interestingly, they report normal general quality of life, but they rate their Voice-Related Quality of Life (V-RQOL) as low. Here, we assessed the social and auditory-perceptual impacts of artistic-intervention voice therapy with semioccluded vocal tract exercises (SOVTE) and choral singing, on their voices. Material and methods: Seventeen GH-naïve adult IGHD individuals were enrolled in a single-arm interventional pre-post study with 13 weekly sessions of choir singing over 90 days. Outcome measures were V-RQOL scores, self-assessment of voice, and auditory-perceptual analysis (GRBAS scale, G: grade of the severity of dysphonia; R: roughness; B: breathiness; A: asthenia; and S: strain). Results: Marked improvements in total (p = 0.0001), physical (p = 0.0002), and socioemotional (p = 0.0001) V-RQOL scores and in self-assessment of voice (p = 0.004) were found. The general grades of vocal deviation (p = 0.0001), roughness (p = 0.0001), breathiness (p = 0.0001) and strain (p = 0.0001) exhibited accentuated reductions. Conclusions: Voice therapy with semioccluded vocal tract exercises and choral training improved social impact and perceptual voice assessments in IGHD subjects and markedly improved their voice-related quality of life. This is particularly important in a setting where GH replacement therapy is not widely accepted.

Abstract Atractus badius has a long and controversial nomenclatural history due to both its antiquity and the brevity of its original description. This species was described based on two syntypes from Java. Later, a lectotype was designated and the distribution range restricted to the Guiana Shield. Although this species has been repeatedly recorded throughout Amazonia and the Andes, these records have been erroneously assigned to A. badius because of a considerable level of confusion in the literature. We found 13 additional specimens of this poorly known snake, expanding our knowledge on its morphological variability, phylogenetic relationships and distribution. In this paper, we report new localities and data on meristic, morphometric, coloration, scales micro-ornamentation, osteology and hemipenial morphology to A. badius. We also determine the phylogenetic position of A. badius as nested in a composite Guiana Shield clade. In addition, we discuss recent advances on the systematics of Atractus and comment on some ‘new arrangements’ with respect to previously recognized species groups and available morphological evidence. Finally, we highlight the importance of accurate voucher identification before promoting taxonomic changes or implementing nomenclatural acts derived from new phylogenetic hypotheses, and notably propose the synonymy of the recently described A. pyroni with A. roulei.

RESUMO O registro de novas ocorrências de espécies é de suma importância para o estudo da biodiversidade neotropical, precisando estar aliado a um conjunto de caracteres morfológicos bem definidos. Nesse sentido, com foco na biodiversidade Amazônica, o objeto do nosso estudo é o gênero Metaxya C. Presl. (Metaxyaceae). Este gênero apresenta uma ampla distribuição na América Tropical e no Brasil há relato de ocorrência de quatro das seis espécies atualmente reconhecidas no gênero: M. lanosa A. R. Sm. & Tuomisto, M. rostrata (Kunth) C.Presl, M. scalaris Tuomisto & G.G.Cárdenas e M. parkeri (Hook. & Grev.) J. Sm.. Assim, nosso objetivo foi revisitar e buscar características morfológicas diagnósticas de cada espécie que sejam mais intuitivas e que adicione mais um ponto de vista acerca do reconhecimento das espécies, e assim contribuir no entendimento da distribuição geográfica desse grupo. Para isso, foram analisadas cerca de 1.450 exsicatas de Metaxya depositadas nos herbários de instituições nacionais e do exterior. Neste trabalho são apresentadas breves descrições morfológicas das espécies ocorrentes na Amazônia brasileira, comentários sobre as diferenças morfológicas entre as espécies e suas relações filogenéticas. Adicionalmente, apresentamos uma chave de identificação, além de novas ocorrências de M. rostrata para os Estados de Rondônia e Roraima, de M. scalaris para as Antilhas e a primeira citação de M. parkeri para o bioma Cerrado. Também é indicado aqui um isolectotipo de M. parkeri na coleção do Jardim Botânico do Kew (K).

ABSTRACT The record of new occurrences of species is of paramount importance for the study of neotropical biodiversity, needing to be allied to a set of well-defined morphological characters. Hence, with a focus on Amazonian biodiversity, the object of our study is the genus Metaxya (Metaxyaceae). Metaxya C. Presl. has a wide distribution in Tropical America and in Brazil are recorded four of the six recognized species in the genus: M. lanosa A. R. Sm. & Tuomisto, M. rostrata (Kunth) C.Presl, M. scalaris Tuomisto & G.G.Cárdenas and M. parkeri (Hook. & Grev.) J. Sm. Thus, our aim was to revisit and look for diagnostic morphological traits for each species, adding one more point of view of species recognition, therefore, contribute to the understanding of the geographic distribution of this group. To achieve these aims, around 1,450 Metaxya samples deposited in the herbaria of national and foreign institutions were analyzed. This work presents brief morphological descriptions of species occurring in the Brazilian Amazon, comments on the morphological differences between species and their phylogenetic relationships. Additionally, we provide an identification key, new occurrences of M. rostrata for the States of Rondônia and Roraima, also M. scalaris for the Antilles and the first citation of M. parkeri for the Cerrado biome. Finally, we indicate here an isolectotype of M. parkeri in the collection of the Kew Botanical Garden (K).

Resumo A bacia do rio Gravataí, uma das principais fontes de água da região metropolitana de Porto Alegre, está entre os dez rios mais poluídos do Brasil. No Brasil a qualidade da água é monitorada apenas através de parâmetros físico-químicos e microbiológicos e, nesse contexto, considerando a importância do uso de biomarcadores para complementar a análise da água, o presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a qualidade ambiental do principal afluente do Rio Gravataí, o arroio Demétrio, através de critérios físico-químicos, microbiológicos e citogenotóxicos, na nascente do arroio (P1), a montante e próximo à área com maior densidade urbana (P2) e a jusante e próximo ao ponto de encontro com o rio Gravataí (P3). Os resultados para a cor da água e para a concentração de cobre classificaram o arroio Demétrio como Classe 4 em geral, ou seja, esta água é adequada apenas para navegação e harmonia da paisagem. As principais alterações genotóxicas (micronúcleos e brotos nucleares) foram observadas no P2, no qual foram obtidos os maiores teores de cobre, além de ferro e manganês. Intervenções antrópicas foram observadas em P1 e P2; no entanto, devido à sua baixa concentração de metais, o P3, próximo ao rio Gravataí, manifestou uma melhoria na qualidade ambiental.

Abstract The Gravataí River basin, one of the main water sources of the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, is among the ten most polluted rivers in Brazil. Water quality is monitored only through physico-chemical and microbiological parameters in Brazil, and in this context, considering the importance of the use of biomarkers in complementing the analysis of water, the present study aimed to evaluate the environmental quality of the main affluent of the Gravataí River, Demetrio stream, through physico-chemical, microbiological, and cytogenotoxic criteria, at the stream source (P1), whereas samples P2 and P3 were obtained from the upstream near the area with the highest urban density and the downstream near the meeting point with the Gravataí River, respectively. The results for copper concentration and color classified the Demetrio stream as Class 4 in general, that is, the water is suitable only for navigation and to landscape harmony. The main genotoxic alterations (micronuclei and nuclear buds) were observed in P2, in which were obtained the highest levels of copper, in addition to iron and manganese. Anthropic interventions were observed in P1 and P2; however, due to its low metal concentration, P3, near the Gravataí River, manifested an improvement in environmental quality.

RESUMO Medidas de área foliar são utilizadas em estudos agronômicos para avaliar o crescimento vegetal, interceptação de luz, taxas fotossintéticas e transpiração das plantas, constituindo-se assim em importante indicador da produtividade das culturas, cujo método de avaliação deve ser rápido, preciso e de baixo custo. Neste estudo, objetivou-se comparar diferentes métodos indiretos para estimar a área foliar na pornunça (Manihot sp). A pesquisa foi realizada em condições de campo, de agosto de 2017 a janeiro de 2019 na região semiárida do Estado de Pernambuco, Nordeste do Brasil. Três métodos foram testados: dimensões lineares das folhas (comprimento, largura e número de lóbulos); imagem digital; e imagem digitalizada da folha. Foram analisadas 150 folhas saudáveis provenientes de 120 plantas de pornunça em diferentes estádios de crescimento. Os critérios utilizados para determinar os melhores modelos de regressão avaliados foram: alto coeficiente de determinação, baixo critério de informação de Akaike, baixa soma do quadrado de resíduos e alto índice de Willmott. Independentemente do método de determinação, os modelos potenciais apresentaram os melhores critérios de adequação para estimar a área foliar na pornunça. A imagem digital, utilizando o modelo potência (Y=CL0,77NL0,49, onde C e L são o comprimento e a largura da folha e NL o número de lóbulos na folha) foi o melhor método não destrutivo para estimar a área foliar nas plantas da pornunça.

ABSTRACT Leaf area measurements are used in agronomic studies to evaluate plant growth, light interception, photosynthetic rates, and plant transpiration. It constitute an important indicator of crop productivity, for which the evaluation method must be fast, accurate, and of low cost. The objective of this study was to compare different indirect methods to estimate leaf area in pornunça (Manihot sp.). The research was carried out under field conditions from August 2017 to January 2019 in the semiarid region of Pernambuco State, Northeastern Brazil. Three methods were tested: linear dimensions of leaf (length, width, and the number of lobes), digital image, and leaf scanned image, analyzing 150 healthy leaves from 120 plants of pornunça at different growth stages. The criteria used to determine the best model(s) were a high coefficient of determination, low Akaike information criterion, low sum of squares of residuals, and high Willmott index. Independent of the method of determination, the power models showed the best criteria of adequacy for estimating the leaf area of the pornunça. The digital image, using the power model (Y=LW0.77NL0.49, where L and W are the leaf length and width, and NL is the number of lobes in the leaf) was the best non-destructive method for estimating the leaf area in pornunça plants.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo in vitro foi de avaliar a influencia do tempo de tratamento no desempenho de dentifrícios fluoretados nano-encapsulados na remineralizagao de lesoes cariosas iniciáis. Noventa e seis amostras de esmalte humano foram divididas em oito grupos (n = 12): 50% NanoF + 50% NaF livre, 100% NanoF, 100% NaF (controle positivo) e Placebo (controle negativo) com dois tempos diferentes (um e cinco minutos). Após a indugao da lesao cariosa, os espécimes foram submetidos a um modelo de ciclagem de pH por sete dias. A microdureza superficial foi medida antes e após a indugao da lesao cariosa e após o tratamento. O percentual de remineralizagao superficial foi calculado para cada tempo de estudo. Os dados foram analisados pelo ANOVA e ANOVA de medidas repetidas, seguida de Bonferroni (p <0,05). Diferengas de remineralizagao foram observadas nos dentifrícios de acordo com o tempo de tratamento utilizado. Formulagoes NanoF com 50% (tratamento de um minuto) e 100% (tratamento de cinco minutos) promoveram uma remineralizagao do esmalte, após o desafio cariogènico, quando comparado com o dentifricio placebo (p <0,05). Assim, o tempo foi considerado um fator importante para o sistema de liberagao de flúor. A nanotecnologia pode ser um sistema promissor de remineralizagao da cárie, por disponibilizar o flúor por maior tempo na superficie dentària.

ABSTRACT The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the influence of treatment time on the remineralization performance of nanoencapsulated fluoride dentifrices on initial carious lesions. Ninety-six human enamel samples were allocated to eight groups (n = 12): 50% NanoF + 50% free NaF, 100% NanoF, 100% NaF (positive control), and placebo (negative control), using two different treatment times (one and five minutes) for each dentifrice tested. After the carious lesion induction, the specimens were submitted to a pH remineralizing cycling model for seven days. Surface microhardness was measured before and after carious lesion induction and after treatment. The percentage of surface remineralization was calculated for each study time. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and ANOVA repeated-measures tests followed by the Bonferroni correction (p < 0.05). Remineralization differences were observed in the dentifrices analyzed according to the treatment time used. NanoF formulations with 50% (one-min treatment) and 100% (five-min treatment) promoted significant remineralization of enamel after the caries challenge when compared to the placebo dentifrice (p < 0.05). Thus, time was considered an important factor for the fluoride release system. Nanotechnology can be a promising system for caries remineralization as it makes fluoride available on the dental surface for a longer time.

Abstract Composite materials are employed as an alternative of conventional materials due their attractive properties, such as, environmental resistance and high strength-to-weight ratio. However, a limitation to the application of the composites is the low resistance to high temperatures, due their polymeric matrix. Alternatively, geopolymers are inorganic polymers used mainly instead Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) in civil engineering. They combine good mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and thermal stability, allowing the use as a thermal barrier. This work regards the combined application of composites and geopolymers through adhesive bonding. The main objective is to evaluate the effect of adhesive type and surface treatment on the adhesion between geopolymer and composite pultruded substrates. Pull off tests were carried out in composite-adhesive-geopolymer sandwich specimens. Different surface treatments were examined: unidirectional abrasion and bidirectional abrasion. Specimens were bonded either with an epoxy or a polyurethane adhesive. The influence of the geopolymer manufacturing process on the performance of the structure was also observed.
