Abstract Knowledge Translation (KT) provides technologies that can be used to operationalize the collaboration between university and society for evidence-informed policy-making in response to health needs. Based on the formation of a working group (one of the available KT technologies) and to understand the health needs of Primary Health Care (PHC) workers in the city of São Paulo, this study aimed to report the experience of problematization and instrumentalization carried out with researchers, managers and PHC workers of the city of São Paulo. The Historical and Dialectical Materialism oriented the process of emancipatory workshops with the participants. The problems faced by the workers were raised and workshops and seminars were held to provide knowledge according to the needs of the group of participants. In the process of understanding the health needs of PHC workers the participants related the forms of work organization to the workers' wear out, which was emphasized by the group. The formation of the group was strategic to reach the objective and also to direct the research on the answers to the health needs of workers in the area, the next stage of the KT.

Abstract Propolis is a resinous product collected by honeybees with a complex chemical composition. Sodium carboxymethylcellulose is a polymer commonly used in wound care. The goal of the present work was to produce and characterize NaCMC membranes loaded with extract of Brazilian brown propolis (CMC-P). Flavonoids and phenolic acids were identified in the propolis extracts, where the main identified substance was kaempferide. The brown propolis extracted was active against S. aureus. The low swelling capacity and high gel fraction of CMC-P would be the consequence of propolis (responsible for a hydrophobic barrier) filling the pores of the membrane. Propolis could be anchoring the NaCMC chains (as observed by FTIR) due to interaction between components, which is corroborated by the CMC-P sample degrading less than the CMC sample (>400ºC). There was non-linear diffusion release kinetics for most phenolic substances of the propolis extract. The CMC-P sample presents potential as a dressing material.

Resumo A periodontite apical persistente (PAP) é uma condição que envolve uma resposta inflamatória e imunológica causada principalmente por infecções polimicrobianas de origem anaeróbia no sistema de canais radiculares, tornando o resultado e o acompanhamento do tratamento do canal radicular intimamente relacionados à resposta do hospedeiro. O reparo da periodontite apical pode estar associado a polimorfismos genéticos. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a associação entre os polimorfismos genéticos do HIF1A (rs2301113 e rs2057482) com a PAP em pacientes brasileiros. Indivíduos com pelo menos 1 ano de acompanhamento após o tratamento do canal radicular (TCR) foram agendados para consulta de acompanhamento. Sessenta e quatro indivíduos com sinais/sintomas de PAP e 84 indivíduos com dentes tratados endodonticamente e tecidos perirradiculares saudáveis (cicatrizados) foram incluídos no presente estudo. O DNA genômico foi extraído da saliva e utilizado para a genotipagem do HIF1A por PCR em tempo real. O genótipo e as frequências alélicas foram comparados por teste c2 ou exato de Fisher e odds-ratio foi implementado por meio do software Epi Info 3.5.2. Todos os testes realizados foram estabelecidos com a=0,05. Não houve associação entre alelo e distribuição genotípica para polimorfismos do HIF1A e PAP (p> 0,05). Os polimorfismos genéticos em HIF1A não foram associados à periodontite apical persistente.

Abstract Persistent apical periodontitis (AP) is a situation involving an inflammatory and immune response caused mainly by anaerobic polymicrobial infection of the root canal system and the outcome and follow-up of the root canal treatment has been reported as intimately related to host response. The apical periodontitis repair might be associated with genetic polymorphisms. This study aimed to evaluate the association between HIF1A genetic polymorphisms (rs2301113 and rs2057482) with PAP in Brazilian patients. Subjects with at least 1 year of follow-up after root canal therapy (RCT) were recalled. Sixty-four subjects with signs/symptoms of PAP and 84 subjects with root canal-treated teeth exhibiting healthy perirradicular tissues (healed) were included. Genomic DNA was extracted from saliva and used for HIF1A genotyping by real-time PCR. Genotype and allele frequencies were compared by c2 or Fisher’s exact tests and odds ratio was implemented, using Epi Info 3.5.2. All tests were performed with an established alpha of 0.05. There was no association between allele and genotype distribution for HIF1As polymorphisms and PAP (p>0.05). The genetic polymorphisms in HIF1A were not associated with persistent apical periodontitis.

Soroprevalence for Hepatitis C virus is reported as 2.12% in Northern Brazil, with about 50% of the patients exhibiting a sustained virological response (SVR). Aiming to associate polymorphisms in Killer Cell Immunoglobulin-like Receptors (KIR) with chronic hepatitis C and therapy responses we investigated 125 chronic patients and 345 controls. Additionally, 48 ancestry markers were genotyped to control for population stratification. The frequency of the KIR2DL2 and KIR2DL2+HLA-C Asp80 gene and ligand was higher in chronic infected patients than in controls (p < 0.0009, OR = 3.4; p = 0.001, OR = 3.45). In fact, KIR2DL3 is a weaker inhibitor of NK activity than KIR2DL2, which could explain the association of KIR2DL2 with chronic infection. Moreover, KIR2DS2 and KIR2DS2+HLA-C Asp80 (p < 0.0001, OR = 2.51; p = 0.0084, OR = 2.62) and KIR2DS3 (p < 0.0001; OR = 2.57) were associated with chronic infection, independently from KIR2DL2. No differences in ancestry composition were observed between control and patients, even with respect to therapy response groups. The allelic profile KIR2DL2/KIR2DS2/KIR2DS3 was associated with the chronic hepatitis C (p < 0.0001; OR = 3). Furthermore, the patients also showed a higher mean number of activating genes and a lower frequency of the homozygous AA profile, which is likely secondary to the association with non-AA and/or activating genes. In addition, the KIR2DS5 allele was associated with SVR (p = 0.0261; OR = 0.184).The ancestry analysis of samples ruled out any effects of population substructuring and did not evidence interethnic differences in therapy response, as suggested in previous studies.

Observaram-se as percepções sociais de pacientes a respeito de profissionais como minimizadores ou maximizadores de stress experimentado em Unidade de Terapia Intensiva. A situação em Unidade de Terapia Intensiva facilita o aparecimento de fenômenos que alteram as percepções subjetivas no modo de lidar com os assuntos de saúde/doença. Aplicou-se um inventário de avaliação de estressores em Unidade de Terapia Intensiva que continha perguntas sobre quem seria o responsável pelo stress experimentado. Inferiram-se relações entre profissionais da equipe de saúde e dimensões da experiência: individual (paciente), interindividual (paciente e outras pessoas) e intergrupal (paciente e profissionais). Foram 85 participantes; utilizaram-se correlações de Pearson e qui-quadrado. Os aspectos mais estressantes foram os ligados à dimensão individual, enquanto os menos estressantes estiveram relacionados à estrutura física e relações intergrupais. A figura considerada mais estressante foi a "equipe", indicando certa diluição de responsabilidade. Houve mais ênfase nos aspectos físicos do que psicossociais na Unidade de Terapia Intensiva.

We observed patients' social perceptions about professionals as minimizers/ maximizers of stress experienced in an Intensive Care Unit. Our assumption was that the situation of an Intensive Care Unit contributes to the appearance of phenomena that change subjective perceptions in order to deal with health/disease matters. The method consisted of applying a questionnaire to evaluate stressful factors in an Intensive Care Unit, and it included certain questions about who would be responsible for provoking the specific stresses experienced. We analyzed relationships between these professionals and some of the dimensions of that experience: individual (patient), inter-individual (patient and other people) and intergroup (patient and professionals). There were 85 participants and we employed the Pearson´s correlation and chi-square tests. The most stressful aspects were those related to the individual dimension, while the least stressful were related to physical structure and intergroup relations. We observed that the team was the figure most associated with stress, which points to a certain dilution of responsibility. There was more emphasis on the physical than the psychosocial aspects in an Intensive Care Unit.
