The leishmaniosis is a parasitic disease caused by a protozoan from the genus Leishmania spp., wich is considered in expansion in Brazil. In 2002 it was notify the first autochthonous human case of American tegumentary leishmaniasis (ATL) in a district of Porto Alegre, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Presently, 17 human cases were notified until November 2005, and there are many suspect cases, waiting for the diagnostic confirmation, converting this State in a risk area for the ATL. In the urban area, the dog plays an important role, acting as a source of infection and reservoir of this protozoan. Therefore a serological evaluation was done in 200 domicilliary dogs in a 1 km radius from 3 autochthonous human cases that occurred at the Rincão Road, located at the region of Lomba do Pinheiro, Porto Alegre district, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. The Indirect immunofluorescent reaction (IFR) was used for the serologic diagnosis of the dogs. The seroprevalence of Leishmania spp. antibodies was 3,5% (7/200), considering that from all the positives, 6 were male individuals and 1 was a female. Using the Fischer's Accurate Test for the statistical analysis, it was observed a significant association (p = 0,0484) between positives to the IFR and the gender of the animals. It was evidenced that males are 7 times (odds-ratio = 7,624) more predisposed to this infection than the females. The human presence plus the detection of Leishmania spp. antibodies in the canine population, demonstrates that the participation of the dogs occurs in the epidemiologic cycle of this disease in the urban focus from the Rincão Road

Através da realização do estudo podemos concluir que 3,5% dos cães estudados apresentaram positividade na IFI; a soro-positividade baixa associada ao fato de os animais positivos terem sido assintomáticos, não descartam o seu papel como fonte de infecção e potencial risco à saúde pública. Assim sendo, os resultados encontrados evidenciam a possi-bilidade da existência do protozoário na população canina da região, tornando necessárias novas pesquisas, utilizando técnicas diagnósticas mais sensíveis, para comprovação dos resultados obtidos

Difilobotriose é causada em humanos pela infecção com vermes adultos do gênero Diphyllobothrium adquiridos pelo consumo de peixe cru ou mal cozido. Diphyllobothrium latum foi confirmado pelo exame dos proglotes grávidos e típicos ovos operculados nas fezes. O paciente havia comido crustáceos e peixes. É o relato do primeiro brasileiro infectado.

Diphyllobothriasis is caused in humans by infection with adult tapeworms of the genus Diphyllobothrium acquired by consuming raw or undercooked freshwater fish. Diphyllobothrium latum was confirmed by examination of the gravid proglottids and typical operculated eggs in the stool. The patient had a history of eating crustaceans and fish. This is the case report of the first Brazilian infected.

Screening sorológico e avaliação de fatores de risco para a transmissão de Toxoplasma gondii foi conduzido em 2.126 gestantes no sul do Brasil. Entre as gestantes avaliadas, 74,5% (n=1.583) mostraram anticorpos específicos contra Toxoplasma gondii. O contato com o solo foi o maior fator associado à infecção.

Serological screening and evaluation of exposure factors for Toxoplasma gondii transmission were conducted in 2126 pregnant women from southern Brazil. Specific antibodies against Toxoplasma gondii were presented by 74.5% (n=1583) of the pregnant women evaluated. Contact with soil was found to be the major factor for infection.

A população estudada foi composta por 2.126 gestantes atendidas em unidades do Sistema Único de Saúde da região noroeste do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Após o screening sorológico inicial ocorreu o acompanhamento das gestantes, durante o pré-natal, e de seus bebês. Foram realizadas dosagens de IgG, IgM, IgA, Avidez de IgG, inoculação em camundongos, PCR e coleta de placenta e de cordões umbilicais para realizar a técnica de imuno-histoquímica além de avaliações clínicas. Das gestantes avaliadas, 74,5% eram IgG reagentes e 3,6% IgM reagentes. Nas avaliações oftalmológicas, foi observada lesão em dez gestantes e uma criança apresentou lesões oftalmológicas e calcificações cerebrais. A presença de IgM específico anti-T.gondii, durante toda a gestação não caracterizou a fase aguda recente da infecção, fazendo-se necessária a realização de testes complementares. Ressalta-se a importância do acompanhamento de neonatos de mães com sorologia compatível com a infecção mesmo sem sinais e sintomas sugestivos de toxoplasmose congênita.

This study followed up 2,126 pregnant women cared for at SUS day-care clinics (Public Health Insurance System) of the northwest of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. After serological screening we performed a follow up of all pregnant women and their babies. Serologic tests included: IgG, IgM, IgA and IgG avidity levels, mice inoculation and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) also placentas and umbilical materials were tested using immunoperoxidase as well as clinical evaluation. Of all the pregnant women screened, 74.5% were reactive to toxoplasmosis, and 3.6% presented IgM seropositivity. At ophthalmic evaluation ten women had ocular lesions and one infant presented eye lesions and brain calcification. The presence of anti-T.gondii specific IgM throughout the entire pregnancy did not characterize acute phase infection, for this, complementary tests were necessary. The importance is underscored for attendance of the newborn of mothers presenting serology compatible with this infection even in the absence of signs and symptoms of congenital toxoplasmosis.

A detecção de Toxoplasma gondii no sangue venoso e na placenta de gestantes pela reação de polimerase em cadeia pode facilitar o diagnóstico pré-natal da toxoplasmose congênita. Foram avaliadas gestantes IgM-reagentes e os seus filhos. Além das dosagens de IgG, IgM, IgA e reação de avidez de IgG (MEIA), foram realizadas a técnica de imunoperoxidase e a inoculação em camundongos. De cada amostra foi efetuada amplificação gênica com primers do gene B1 e novos primers do gene TGR (chamados ABGTg7 C1 e N1). É preciso observar que o tratamento poderia ser responsável por uma diminuição da infecção. Desta forma, o diagnóstico negativo confirmaria a eficiência do tratamento preventivo na replicação parasitária no útero. A reação de polimerase em cadeia mostrou-se sensível e específica; evidenciou a presença de um a dez taquizoítas; pode ser utilizada com segurança e confiabilidade, além de tornar rápido o diagnóstico da toxoplasmose congênita, sendo, assim, ferramenta importante na avaliação pré-natal.

The Toxoplasma gondii detection in venous blood and placenta of pregnants by polymerase chain reaction may facilitate the diagnosis of congenital toxoplasmosis. We evaluated pregnants with reagent immunoglobulin M (IgM) and their children. Beyond serological toxoplasma-specific immunoglobulins G (IgG), M (IgM), A (IgA) and IgG avidity (MEIA), we did immunoperoxidasis and mice inoculation. Genomic amplification with gene B1 primers and new TgR primers (called ABGTg7 C1 and N1) was conducted for each sample. It's necessary to observe that treatment probably is responsible for the infection decrease, that manner, negative results would confirm uteri therapeutic efficiency. PCR was sensitive and specific, it identified one to ten tachyzoites. Besides being a fast form of congenital toxoplasmosis diagnosis, it may be used safely and trustly, as an important tool for congenital evaluation.
