BACKGROUND Leishmaniasis, a neglected disease caused by the parasite Leishmania, is treated with drugs associated with high toxicity and limited efficacy, in addition to constant reports of the emergence of resistant parasites. In this context, snake serums emerge as good candidates since they are natural sources with the potential to yield novel drugs. OBJECTIVES We aimed to show the antileishmanial effects of γCdcPLI, a phospholipase A2 inhibitor from Crotalus durissus collilineatus snake serum, against Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis. METHODS Promastigotes forms were exposed to γCdcPLI, and we assessed the parasite viability and cell cycle, as well as invasion and proliferation assays. FINDINGS Despite the low cytotoxicity effect on macrophages, our data indicate that γCdcPLI has a direct effect on parasites promoting an arrest in the G1 phase and reduction in the G2/M phase at the highest dose tested. Moreover, this PLA2 inhibitor reduced the parasite infectivity when promastigotes were pre-treated. Also, we demonstrated that the γCdcPLI treatment modulated the host cell environment impairing early and late steps of the parasitism. MAIN CONCLUSIONS γCdcPLI is an interesting tool for the discovery of new essential targets on the parasite, as well as an alternative compound to improve the effectiveness of the leishmaniasis treatment. RESUMO Introdução: No Brasil, há um número considerável de pessoas com surdez, usuárias de língua de sinais, as quais deveriam ter acesso à igualdade de oportunidades. Apesar disso, a língua de sinais ainda é desconhecida por parte da população brasileira, especialmente os que trabalham em órgãos públicos, negando seus direitos de igualdade. Assim, em geral, vários profissionais, entre esses os guardas municipais, não estão preparados para a diversidade. Objetivo: Investigar o conhecimento dos membros da guarda municipal (GM) de Curitiba a respeito dos surdos, da Língua Brasileira de Sinais (Libras) e das práticas de atendimento diante da necessidade de interagir com cidadãos surdos. Método: Trata-se de um estudo transversal de natureza mista, cuja coleta de dados se deu por meio da aplicação de um questionário semiestruturado, respondido por 50 policiais da GM, com perguntas a respeito do conhecimento deles sobre os surdos e a língua de sinais e das práticas de atendimento realizadas por membros da corporação com pessoas surdas. Os dados foram tabulados e analisados em percentuais quantitativos e eixos de análise qualitativa, sob a Análise do Conteúdo de Bardin. Resultados: Os resultados demonstram que os participantes possuem conhecimento limitado da surdez e da Libras. Conclusão: A maioria dos integrantes da GM da cidade possui uma visão de surdos e da Língua Brasileira de Sinais baseada em uma perspectiva orgânica da surdez. Além disso, foi possível observar que, durante as práticas de atendimento desses servidores públicos com um cidadão surdo, muitos não conseguiram interagir nem se comunicar.

ABSTRACT Introduction: In Brazil, there is a considerable number of deaf people, sign language users, who should have access to equal opportunities. However, sign language is unknown by the most Brazilian population, especially those who work in public institutions, and deny the deaf their rights to equality. Therefore, several professionals, among them, the municipal guards, are not prepared for the diversity. Purpose: to investigate the knowledge of the Municipal Guards (MG) from Curitiba about the deaf, Brazilian Sign Language (Libras),and their service practices when they need to interact with deaf citizens. Method: It´s a mixed crosscut study; data were collected by the application of a semi-structured questionnaire answered by 50 municipal guards, with questions on their knowledge about the deaf, the sign language and the service practices conducted by their corporation towards deaf people. Data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively by means of Bardin’s Content Analysis. Results: The results demonstrate that participants have a limited knowledge of deafness and Libras. Conclusion: Most members of the Municipal Guard have a view of deaf people and the Brazilian Sign Language based on an organic perspective of deafness, and it was also observed that during their service practices towards deaf people, many of them could not either interact or communicate with them.

RESUMO O objetivo com o trabalho foi avaliar a viabilidade econômica da suplementação de L-arginina em dietas para matrizes suínas durante a fase de lactação. Um estudo de caso descritivo foi realizado para identificar a viabilidade econômica da suplementação de L-arginina na ração de lactação, em relação à dieta controle, sobre o desempenho produtivo de matrizes suínas hiperprolíficas e suas leitegadas. O estudo foi realizado em uma granja comercial localizada no estado de Minas Gerais. Analisou critérios de viabilidade como o produto físico marginal (MPPg) e margem bruta (GM) no cenário de eficiência técnica e econômica, que foram comparados com o GM no grupo controle. A eficiência técnica foi estabelecida em 0,71% de L-arginina no consumo diário de ração de acordo com trabalho de campo prévio realizado pelos autores, enquanto a eficiência econômica obtida neste estudo foi de 0,43% de suplementação. A relação entre o preço da L-arginina e o preço de venda dos leitões determinou diretamente a viabilidade econômica, comparado ao grupo controle. Assim, considerando inicialmente o preço de um leitão como R$ 9,76/kg, o custo da L-arginina não deve exceder 6,61 vezes esse valor; isto é, estima-se em até R$ 64,50. Portanto, ao preço final de L-arginina de R$ 54,88, um leitão deve ser vendido ao preço de R$ 8,30/kg para tornar a suplementação de L-arginina na dieta de matrizes suínas em fase de lactação economicamente viáveis.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the economic viability of L-arginine supplementation in diets for sows during the lactation phase. A descriptive case study was carried out to identify the economic viability of the supplementation of L-arginine in the lactation ration, in relation to the control diet, on the productive performance of hyper prolific sows and their litters. The study was carried out on a commercial farm located in the state of Minas Gerais. It analyzed feasibility criteria such as the marginal physical product (MPPg) and gross margin (GM) in the scenario of technical and economic efficiency, which were compared to the GM in the control group. Technical efficiency was established at 0.71% of L-arginine in daily feed intake according to previous fieldwork by the authors, while economic efficiency obtained in this study was 0.43% supplementation. The relationship between the L-arginine price and the sale price of the piglets directly determined the economic viability, compared to the control group. Thus, initially considering the price of a piglet as R$ 9.76/kg, the cost of L-arginine should not exceed 6.61 times this value; that is, it is estimated at up to R$ 64.50. Therefore, at the final price of L-arginine of R$ 54.88, a piglet should be sold at a price of R$ 8.30/kg to make the supplementation of L-arginine in the diet of lactation-phase swine economically possible.

Objetivou-se avaliar o desempenho, glicerol sérico e umidade da cama de pintos de corte recebendo rações com diferentes níveis e fontes de glicerina. Foram utilizados 1300 pintos de corte machos Cobb 500, num arranjo fatorial 4x3+1, com delineamento inteiramente casualizados, sendo quatro níveis de inclusão (17,5; 35,0; 52,5 e 70,0g/kg) de três glicerinas (bruta de soja (GS), bruta mista (GM) e semipurificada (GPUR) nas dietas isonutritivas e um tratamento sem glicerina, sendo que para as fontes e níveis de glicerina foram teste de Student-Newman-Keuls e análise de regressão, respectivamente; e para o tratamento, teste de Dunnett. Utilizou-se quatro repetições e 25 aves por parcela. O consumo de ração foi influenciado (P<0,05) pelas fontes de glicerina, sendo a GM a fonte que promoveu menor consumo nas aves, porém, não houve diferença dos tratamentos em relação ao controle. Não houve diferença significativa para o ganho de peso. Houve interação dos níveis e fontes de glicerina para a conversão alimentar. Para a GS, a melhor conversão alimentar com a inclusão de 50,35g; para a GM, houve uma piora linear com o aumento da inclusão de glicerina. Houve interação para a concentração de glicerol sérico nas aves, obtendo aumento linear nas aves que ingeriram a GS e GPUR, e redução linear para a GM. O ganho de umidade da cama foi influenciado pelas fontes de glicerina, sendo que a mista apresentou menor umidade. As glicerinas estudadas podem ser incluídas nas rações para pintos de corte até 70,0g/kg, sem prejudicar o desempenho dos animais.

This work aimed to evaluate the performance, serum glycerol and litter moisture of 1300 male Cobb 500 chicks fed diets containing different levels and sources of glycerin. A 4x3+1 factorial arrangement of treatments in a completely randomized design was used, with four inclusion levels of three glycerine (crude soybean (GS), gross mixed (GM) and semipurified (GPUR)) on isonutrient diets and one control treatment without glycerin. The methods of Student-Newman-Keuls test and regression analysis were applied for sources and levels of glycerin, respectively; and Dunnett test for treatment. It was used four replicates and 25 chickens per pen. Feed intake was affected (P <0.05) by the sources of glycerin, and GM was the source that promoted lower consumption in birds, however, there was no difference in the treatments when compared to control. Also there was no significant difference in weight gain. An interaction of levels and sources of glycerine to the feed conversion was seen.GS had the best feed conversion with the inclusion of 50,35g; GM had a linear worsening with increasing addition of glycerin. There was an interaction for the concentration of serum glycerol in birds, obtaining linear increase in birds consuming the GS and GPUR, and linear decrease for GM. The gain of litter moisture was influenced by the sources of glycerin, with a lower humidity for GM. The glycerine studied may be included in diets for broiler chicks until 70,0g/kg, without harming animal performance.

Os costões rochosos do litoral norte paulista, devido à sua constituição diversificada, sustentam uma grande diversidade de espécies animais e vegetais, além de proporcionar uma série de abrigos para proteção de muitos organismos. Em alguns destes costões ocorre a formação de microhabitats, entre eles os recifes de areia formadas pelo poliqueta Phragmatopoma lapidosa, que ocupam grande parte desta área. A paisagem diferenciada do local atrai um grande número de turistas, o que contribui para a deterioração das colônias que constituem esse recife, causando um desequilíbrio nos padrões de distribuição das populações desse ecossistema. Este trabalho visou levantar informações sobre a estrutura e dinâmica populacional de Eriphia gonagra, além de investigar uma ocupação diferencial do habitat por diferentes grupos etários deste caranguejo. Os caranguejos foram amostrados mensalmente, durante dois anos consecutivos, no costão rochoso da Praia Grande, Ubatuba, São Paulo, Brasil, em períodos de marés baixas de sizígia. A coleta ativa dos indivíduos foi efetuada em uma área de aproximadamente 1200 m2 por um período de duas horas na superfície rochosa e outras duas horas nos recifes de areia. Foi capturado um total de 1407 indivíduos, sendo 776 no recife de areia (SR) e 631 na superfície rochosa (RO). A maior parte dos jovens habita o recife, enquanto adultos encontram-se igualmente distribuídos nas duas áreas amostradas. Este estudo mostra que os recifes de areia podem ser considerados berçários de suma importância para o estabelecimento dos estágios juvenis de E. gonagra, que utilizam tais locais para proteção e alimentação. Muitos outros organismos (moluscos, equinodermos, poliquetas etc) se estabelecem sobre os recifes, sendo que essas áreas podem estar entre as mais importantes na manutenção da diversidade bêntica na região.

The structurally diverse rocky shores along the northern coast of the state of São Paulo, Brazil, support a varied fauna and provide refuges for many organisms. Some of these environments allow for extensive microhabitats, among them the sand reefs formed by the polychaete Phragmatopoma lapidosa, which occupy much of this area. The beauty of the landscape attracts large numbers of tourists, who contribute to the damage to the sand reef colonies, causing an imbalance in the patterns of population distribution and of this ecosystem. We describe the structure and population biology of the redfinger rubble crab Eriphia gonagra, and investigated the differential occupation of the habitat by each demographic category of this species. Crabs were sampled monthly for two consecutive years on the rocky coast of Grande Beach, Ubatuba, São Paulo, during spring low tides. Sampling was carried out over an area of approximately 1200 m2, during two hours on the rock surface and another two hours on the sand reefs. A total of 1407 crabs were collected; 776 on the sand reef (SR) and 631 on the rocky shore (RO). The majority of juvenile crabs inhabited the SR, while adult crabs were equally distributed in both microhabitats. This study showed that the SR is a natural nursery ground for the establishment of the early juvenile stages of E. gonagra, which use the reefs as a refuge and food resource. Many other organisms (mollusks, echinoderms, polychaetes etc.) settle on the reefs, and these areas may be among the most important in maintaining benthic diversity in the region.

O presente trabalho foi conduzido em casa-de-vegetação do Departamento de Ciência do Solo da Universidade Federal de Lavras, no período de fevereiro a junho de 2002, com os objetivos de avaliar para o arroz (Oriza sativa L. cv. Jequitibá), cultivado em solos de várzea inundados, a resposta à adubação potássica e a contribuição das formas de K na nutrição, e estimar os níveis críticos do nutriente nos solos e na planta. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 4x5, com quatro repetições, sendo quatro solos de várzea [Neossolo Flúvico (RU), Gleissolo Háplico (GX), Gleissolo Melânico (GM) e Organossolo Mésico (OY)] e cinco níveis de saturação por K da CTC potencial (natural, 4, 6, 8 e 10%). As saturações naturais foram de 1,49, 1,65, 1,30 e 1,55% para os solos RU, GX, GM e OY, respectivamente. Inicialmente, amostras suficientes de 4 dm³ dos solos receberam correção com calcário para elevar a V a 50% e incubados por 30 dias. Em seguida, amostras de 3 dm³ dos solos receberam os tratamentos com potássio e uma adubação básica com macro e micronutrientes e foram incubados por mais 30 dias em vasos com capacidade para 5 dm³. No final desse período, os solos foram inundados onde se cultivaram duas plantas de arroz por vaso, nas quais avaliaram-se os teores foliares de K no florescimento e a produção de grãos no final do ciclo. Em subamostras obtidas dos solos dos vasos antes e após o cultivo, analisaram-se as formas de potássio: K total (Ktot), K não-trocável (Knt), K trocável (Ktr), K em solução (Ksol) e K disponível pelo extrator Mehlich 1 (K M1). Pelos resultados, verificou-se que o arroz respondeu em produção de grãos à adubação potássica em todos os solos estudados. Houve aproveitamento do Knt pela cultura, embora o Ktr tenha sido a forma que mais contribuiu no suprimento do nutriente. As saturações críticas por K para 90% da produção máxima foram 4,0, 8,1, 7,8 e 4,4% para os solos RU, GX, GM e OY, respectivamente. Da mesma forma, os níveis críticos foliares de K foram 9,6, 11,1, 10,2 e 11,5 g kg-1.

The present work was conducted in a greenhouse at the Department of Soil Science of the Federal University of Lavras, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, in the period of February to June 2002, to investigate the response to potassium fertilization by rice plants (Oriza sativa L. cv. Jequitibá) cultivated in flooded soils, the contribution of the K form on their nutrition, and to estimate the critic levels of the nutrient in the soils and in the plants. The experimental design utilized was the totally randomized, in the 4 x 5 factorial scheme, with four replications. Four flooded soils (Mesic Organosoil - OY, Melanic Gleysoil - GM, Haplic Gleysoil - GX, and Fluvic Neosoil - RU) and five levels of potassium saturation of the potential CEC (natural content, 4, 6, 8 and 10% of the pH - 7.0 CEC saturated with K) were used. Natural soil K saturations (percentage of pH-7.0 CEC) were 1.55 for the OY soil, 1.30 for the GM soil, 1.65 for the GX soil, and 1.49 for the RU soil. Initially, sufficient samples of 4 dm³ for all soils received limestone to elevate the V to 50% and were incubated for 30 days. Following that, samples of 3 dm³ received the potassium treatments and a basic fertilization with macro and micronutrients and were incubated for more 30 days, in vases with capacity for 5 dm³. In the end of this period, the soils were flooded, to receive two rice plants per vase, on which were measured the leaf content of potassium at the flowering period and the yield at the end of the cycle. In sub-samples obtained from the soils of the vases before and after cultivation, the forms of potassium total K (Ktot), nonexchangeable K (Kne), exchangeable K (Ke), K in solution (Ksol) and available K by the Mehlich-1 extractant were measured. From the results, it was verified that the plants responded in grain yield to the potassium fertilization in all the studied soils. There was uptake of Kne by the crop, however, it was the Ke form that contributed most to the supply of the nutrient.The critic saturation values of K to obtain 90% of the maximum production were 4.0, 8.1, 7.8, and 4.4% for the RU, GX, GM and the OY soils, respectively. On the same way, the critic leaf levels of K were 9.6, 11.1, 10.2 and 11.5 g kg-1.
