OBJECTIVE: In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic brought a work and stress overload to healthcare workers, increasing their vulnerability to mental health impairments. In response, the authors created the COMVC-19 program. The program offered preventive actions and mental health treatment for the 22,000 workers of The Hospital das Clinicas da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (HCFMUSP). This paper aims to describe its implementation and share what we have learned from this experience. METHODS: Workers were able to easily access the program through a 24/7 hotline. Additionally, a mobile phone app that screened for signs and symptoms of emotional distress and offered psychoeducation and/or referral to treatment was made available. Data from both these sources as well as any subsequent psychiatric evaluations were collected. RESULTS: The first 20 weeks of our project revealed that most participants were female, and part of the nursing staff working directly with COVID-19 patients. The most frequently reported symptoms were: anxiety, depression and sleep disturbances. The most common diagnoses were Adjustment, Anxiety, and Mood disorders. CONCLUSIONS: Implementing a mental health program in a multimodal intervention was feasible in a major quaternary public hospital. Our data also suggests that preventive actions should primarily be aimed at anxiety and depression symptoms, with a particular focus on the nursing staff.

An undergraduate organic chemistry experiment for oil extraction and biodiesel production using alternative biomass was developed, whereby oils of avocado, coconut and spent coffee grounds were obtained and submitted to transesterification reaction with CH3OH under NaOH catalysis. Avocado and coffee oils were obtained by typical extraction and coconut oil was obtained through water evaporation of coconut milk in a domestic microwave oven. The commercial oil of licuri (Syagrus coronate), a Brazilian native biomass, was also converted to biodiesel. All four oils and four biodiesels were characterized by 1H-NMR and FTIR, and a comparative study of these spectra reveled that FTIR analyses alone provides enough information to discriminate between oil and biodiesel and confirm transesterification reaction. Besides, the unsaturation degree of all oils was determined by 1H-NMR. A mechanistic proposal concerning the role of NaOH catalysis is presented, excluding the sodium methoxide formation.

In this study, the fatty acid (FA) composition of the Japanese grape (Hovenia dulcis) seed oil (JGSO) was firstly evaluated. It was found that the seed oil is rich in alpha-linolenic acid (LNA), containing approximately 425 mg LNA g-1 of total lipids. A fish diet supplemented with JGSO was prepared and supplied to Nile tilapia to investigate the FA composition of the fillets. For this, Nile tilapia were submitted to two feeding treatments: a control diet with 4.2% of soybean oil, and a diet supplemented with 4.2% of JGSO. The LNA, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) values increased significantly (406, 153 and 126%, respectively) with JGSO in the diet and with an increase in feeding time, while the nutritional quality indexes, n-6/n-3 ratio and index of thrombogenicity, decreased 2.8 and 1.4 times, respectively. Thus, the replacement JGSO in the diet raised the nutritional lipid quality in Nile tilapia.

ABSTRACT: Leaf-cutting ants are considered dominant herbivores in the Neotropical region and, therefore, the studies about their multiple effects on other organisms and ecosystem process are relevant. The present study aims to determine if Atta sexdens (Linnaeus, 1758) nests can affect the soil arthropods assemblage structure in an Atlantic forest fragment. Also, so as to determine the probable mechanisms that explain a possible modification in the arthropods fauna structure were tested two hypothesis: I) Litter Hyphotesis: A. sexdens reduce the litter availability in the nest proximities; II) Abiotic Factors Hyphotesis: A. sexdens modifies the microclimatic conditions around of its nidification site, producing a increasing of temperature and luminosity and reduction in relative air humidity. The study was conducted at the Reserva Ecológica de Guapiaçu, near Rio de Janeiro city, Brazil. We collected litter samples, at intervals of eight meters from edge of A. sexdens nests, along a linear transect of 32 meters, for the extraction of arthropods assemblage and to study the litter structure. We also measured the air and soil temperature, the luminosity and the air relative humidity where we collected the litter samples. We didn’t detect any effect of nest presence on richness, abundance and composition of soil arthropods in the forest fragment studied. Probably, these result was influenced because of A. sexdens nests studied don’t affect the litter availability and the microclimatic conditions around them. Thus, we conclude that the multiple effects that leaf-cutting ants can have on forest may be species dependent.

ABSTRACT In 2012, the first-generation protease inhibitors telaprevir (TVR) and boceprevir (BOC) were introduced in the Brazilian health system for treatment of chronic hepatitis C, after their approval by the National Committee for Health Technology Incorporation (CONITEC). However, these medicines were discontinued in 2015. The short period of use in therapy and their high cost require a discussion about the consequences for patients and for the health system of the early incorporation of new therapies. The article presents a qualitative analysis of the incorporation process of both medications in Brazil and the results of a multicenter study that included patients treated with BOC or TVR between January 2011 and December 2015 in five Brazilian cities. The study included 855 patients (BOC: n=247) and (TVR: n=608). The document analysis showed that CONITEC’s decision to incorporate BOC and TVR was based on results of phase III clinical trials that compared sustained virologic response (SVR) rates of patients treated with BOC and TVR with rates of those that received placebo. However, these studies included a low percentage of cirrhotic patients. The SVR rates observed in this multicenter study were worse than clinical trials pointed out (BOC: 45.6%; TVR: 51.8%), but similar to those achieved with previously adopted therapies. The discontinuation rate due to adverse events was (BOC: 15.4%; TVR: 12.7%). Based on these unsatisfactory results, the study brings a discussion that goes beyond the therapy outcomes, exploring the incorporation of these high-cost medicines and the related decision-making process, contributing to future decisions in medicine policies and in the treatment of chronic hepatitis C.

ABSTRACT Low-Level Laser Therapy stimulates the proliferation of a variety of types of cells. However, very little is known about its effect on stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED). Objective This study aimed to evaluate the influence of different laser therapy energy densities on SHED viability and proliferation. Material and Methods SHED were irradiated according to the groups: I (1.2 J/cm2 - 0.5 mW – 10 s), II (2.5 J/cm2 – 10 mW – 10 s), III (3.7 J/cm2 – 15 mW – 10 s), IV (5.0 J/cm2 – 20 mW – 10 s), V (6.2 J/cm2 – 25 mW – 10 s), and VI (not irradiated – control group). Cell viability was assessed 6 and 24 h after irradiation measuring the mitochondrial activity and using the Crystal Violet assay. Cell proliferation was assessed after 24, 48, and 72 h of irradiation by SRB assay. Results MTT assay demonstrated differences from 6 to 24 hours after irradiation. After 24 h, groups I and IV showed higher absorbance values than those of control group. Crystal Violet assay showed statistically differences in the absorbance rate from 6 to 24 h after irradiation for groups III and VI. At 24 h after irradiation, Group III absorbance rate was greater than that of groups I, II, and IV. Group VI absorbance rate was greater than that of groups I and IV. SRB assay showed that the group I had higher rates than those of groups II, III, V, and VI, at 24 h after irradiation. After 48 h, group I exhibited the greatest cell proliferation rate followed by groups III, V, and VI. After 72 h, group III exhibited the lowest cell proliferation rate than those of groups II, IV, and V. Conclusions The Low-Level Laser Therapy energy densities used in this study did not cause loss of cell viability and stimulated SHED proliferation within the parameters described in this study.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

We report here on a new prozostrodontian cynodont, Botucaraitherium belarminoigen. et sp. nov., from the Late Triassic RiograndiaAssemblage Zone (AZ) of the Candelária Sequence (Santa Maria Supersequence), collected in the Botucaraí Hill Site, Candelária Municipality, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The new taxon is based on a single specimen (holotype MMACR-PV-003-T) which includes the left lower jaw, without postdentary bones, bearing the root of the last incisor, canine and four postcanines plus one partial crown inside the dentary, not erupted, and two maxillary fragments, one with a broken canine and another with one postcanine. The features of the lower jaw and lower/upper postcanines resemble those of the prozostrodontians Prozostrodon brasiliensis from the older HyperodapedonAZ and Brasilodon quadrangularis and Brasilitherium riograndensisfrom the same RiograndiaAZ. The inclusion of Botucaraitheriumwithin a broad phylogenetic analysis, positioned it as a more derived taxon than tritylodontids, being the sister-taxon of Brasilodon, Brasilitheriumplus Mammaliaformes. Although the new taxon is based on few cranial elements, it represents a additional faunal component of the Triassic RiograndiaAZ of southern Brazil, in which small-sized derived non-mammaliaform cynodonts, closely related to the origin of mammaliaforms, were ecologically well succeed and taxonomically diverse.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the frequency and types of limb abnormalities observed among patients with trisomy 18, or Edwards syndrome (ES). METHOD: The sample consisted of consecutive patients evaluated by a clinical genetics service in the period from 1975 to 2008. The results of the cytogenetic analysis, as well as the clinical data were retrieved from the medical records, with special attention to limb abnormalities findings. All the karyotype analysis was performed at the same laboratory. RESULTS: During the study period, 50 patients were identified, 33 (66%) of them females, with ages at the first evaluation ranging from 1 day to 16 years (median 14 days). The single lineage with free trisomy 18 was the most frequent chromosomal disorder (90%). Mosaicism was observed in 10% of the cases. Clenched fist with overlapping fingers was the predominant anomaly of the upper limbs (70%). Other common disorders included the single palmar crease (42%) and hypoplastic nails (36%). Radial abnormalities were found in 11 patients (22%). As for the lower limbs, hypoplastic nails were the most common abnormality (58%), followed by the rocker bottom foot with prominent calcaneus (50%). One patient had unilateral ectrodactyly as well. CONCLUSIONS: Despite the classical description, limb anomalies can be much variable in ES. Some patients may show unusual abnormalities, such as radial defects and ectrodactyly. These findings are extremely important for the clinical suspicion and early identification of patients with ES.

When engaged in work, adolescents may sometimes have their formal studies and self-development disturbed. Our purpose is to analyze the social representations' structure of students about work, and to compare the social representations of adolescents engaged and not engaged in work about work itself and about work associated to study. The theoretical-methodological reference has been the structural approach of Social Representations. The research locus was a secondary school in the West Region of São Paulo, having 724 students. Data collection was done by the technique of free evocations, applied for two inducing terms: work and to work and study. Data treatment used the software Evoc 2000. The results were: positive significances, related to the economic benefits and to the psicossocial and moral development resultant from working, predominated for the term work; on the opposite, the term to work and to study evocated negative aspects related to the double journey of work and study. We have concluded that adolescents' common sense relative to this matter is not different from the scientific concepts that elucidate the difficulties arisen from the double journey.

Since its inception in the 80's, capillary electrophoresis has matured into a well-established separation technique, actually encompassing a family of electrodriven techniques with distinct separation mechanisms and selectivity, performed in a single capillary column. In this work, the versatility of capillary electrophoresis in handling materials from a diversity of chemical classes and complex sample matrices is illustrated by representative applications in the clinical, forensic, cosmetological, environmental, nutritional and pharmaceutical areas, grouping together our own research interests and results.
