Surgical aspects in congenital cataracts

SUMMARY

Surgical results were studied in 117 eyes in three groups of children with congenital cataracts. The age varied from birth to 84 months old. Post operatory follow up ranged from 4 to 48 months (mean = 18 months).

For each group we performed a different surgical technique. In the first group we used the ECCE (with small incision + aspiration), in the second group the ECCE had a primary discision of the posterior lens capsule at the end of the intervention and in the third group a lensectomy "via pars plicata" was performed.

The etiology showed no influence in the surgical results. The age at time of surgery appeared to be a risk factor as younger children had greater rates of complications.

Post operative complications were present in 22% of the cases studied, most of them occurring shortly after surgery (during the first 6 months).

The most common complications observed during this follow up time were the opacification of the visual axis and secondary glaucoma. The statistical analysis showed no significant difference in the rate of incidence of post operative complications between the 3 groups of surgical techniques performed.
