Two meter retinoscopy - a screening method for ambliogenic factors in pre-verbal children of Curitiba

SUMMARY

Two-meters retinoscopy is a new method designed to screen and detect pre-verbal children presenting ambliogenic factors in a way similar to photorefraction, but less expensive and easy to perform.

To evaluate this method we perform two meter retinoscopy in 6-36 month-old children from day e are centers in Curitiba.

A population-based sample of 1445 children was screened with this technique. In 263 children we did a complete ophthalmologic examination to define those who presented with true ambliogenic factors.

Fifty children were screened positive by two meter retinoscopy, in 40 we found ambliogenic factors. Ten were considered false-positives. Only 3 false-negatives where missed by this method.

Sensibility and specificity were calculated and were 93 and 95% respectively. Positive and negative predictive values were 80 and 98% respectively.

In conclusion, two-meters retinoscopy is a safe method used to screen effectively preverbal children with ambliogenic factors.
