Management efficacy of a low vision servisse

SUMMARY

Purpose:

To check the efficacy of the ophthalmological, educational and rehabilitational procedures that are offered by the Low Vision Service of the Ophthalmology Department of the Hospital das Clínicas, UNICAMP.

Methodology:

Ninety (90) students/patients, from 7 to 18 years and 11 months, have been studied between February and June 1997, using the descriptive transverse survey. Ophthalmological reevaluation and confirmation of compliance with the optical aid prescription and orientations were made through questionnaires, application of the chi-square and Fisher tests.

Results:

The congenital bilateral macular chorioretinitis has shown to be the most frequent pathology (46.7%). The age group between 7 - 10 years has shown compatibility between age and schooling (100.0%); among the 11-14 year-old, 30.7%) have shown delay in schooling. Regarding the aid, 85.6% of the persons complied with the prescription; 78.4% of the students utilized non-optical aid. Regarding the offered orientation, 94.4%) of the teachers accepted the optical aid.

Conclusion:

Teachers were receptive to the research proposal and were stimulated by the very students and their parents. Regarding compliance with optical aids 85.6%o of the educators required more suggestions about visual deficiency and its implications.
