Clinical study of mental work of 62 epileptic adolescents

Sixty two neurologically normal epileptic adolescents were studied. Psychological research emphasized data relating to school achievement. Cases of high school achievement were considered as related to type of seizures (presence or absence of convulsions), duration of illness, frequency of crises and electroencephalographic pattern. In a second part, cases of low school achievement were also studied in relation to the same variables. The results, according to statistical analysis, allow the authors to draw the following conclusions: 1) in 31 cases (50%) school achievement was low; 2) type of crises, duration of illness and frequency of fits have not interfered significantly with school achievement; 3) higher achievement was obtained by patients presenting normal EEG; patients with diffuse electroencephalographic anomalies were among those with lowest achievement; 4) when cases of lowest school achievement were considered alone, patients with convulsive symptoms, lesser duration of illness and more frequent crises were found to be predominant.
