FREINET PEDAGOGY IN OAXACA: THE PROGRESO SCHOOL

ABSTRACT

For more than twenty-five years, the Progreso elementary school in San Juan Chilateca, Oaxaca, has been developing an educational project based on Freinet Pedagogy. The teaching staff has worked on the basis of a series of techniques such as assembly, conferences, correspondence, free texts, the diary, living calculation, the natural method, work corners, school radio, and collective workshops, all of which have led to significant and meaningful learning in the school community. The Progreso elementary school is an example that the public educational institution is a valuable option for the formation of autonomous, creative and cooperative personalities.
