TRANSLATING BOUMKŒUR, BY RACHID DJAÏDANI, INTO BRAZILIAN PORTUGUESE: AN OVERVIEW OF THE MAIN CHALLANGES

Abstract

This article is based on a research project entitled “Boumkœur, de Rachid Djaïdani: estudo e tradução para o português do Brasil” (2017) [“Analyzing and translating Boumkœur, by Rachid Djaïdani, into Brazilian Portuguese”]. For this project, conducted during a degree in Modern Languages at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF), I tried to offer an analysis and a translation of Djaïdani’s novel. The scope of this article is however considerably more limited insofar as I present a partial overview of the translation of three excerpts from Boumkœur, which are representative of issues concerning the translation of cultural marks, specific social dialects and poetic texts. In this analytical and translational work I opted for the practice of an “ethics of difference” (VENUTI, 2002) that aims at reconciling the concepts of “foreignization” and “domestication” (VENUTI, 2008).
