TRANSLATIONS OF ALPHONSE’S DAUDET SHORT STORY “LA MENTEUSE” IN THE BRAZILIAN PRESS (1874-1952)

Abstract

The collection of the short stories Les Femmes d’artistes (1874) did not caught the attention of specialized criticism at the time it was release and even nowadays it occupies a secondary place in academic world, unlike other works by the French writer Alphonse Daudet (1840-1897). However, seven of the twelve stories that make up the register translated into Portuguese were found during an in-depth research carried out at the Hemeroteca Digital Brasileira, a collection of digitalized journals from the Fundação Biblioteca Nacional. Among them, the one that stands out from the others is “La Menteuse”, which had seven different translations, reproduced on the pages of Brazilian newspapers and magazines between 1884 and 1952. The present study investigates the agents and institutions responsible for the diffusion and reception of “La Menteuse” in France and Brazil, as well as the media in which the story circulated, in order to recover one of the countless parts that build the great mosaic on the circulation and reception of Alphonse Daudet’s work in Brazil.
