Dam construction and its effects on rural communities: an analysis from the Novo Alagamar Resettlement

Abstract

This paper analyzes the effects and transformations on the socio-productive dynamics of rural communities affected by dam constructions in the northeastern semiarid region. In the analysis proposed here, the empirical universe is the family farmers of the Novo Alagamar Resettlement, located in the municipality of Jaguaretama, Ceará state, who suffered a compulsory displacement process due to the implementation of the Castanhão dam. The research was conducted with a qualitative approach, from interviews, transcription, and data analysis. It was found that farmers affected by resettlement suffered different implications for their livelihoods and productive activities, resulting from the deterritorialization process. However, by facing uncertainties, violations, and difficulties, these farmers also articulated old knowledge from the previous life with new knowledge arising from change, generating a process of permanent reterritorialization.
