Goat and sheep dairy productions in Goiás and Distrito Federal: an analysis of the competitiveness drivers

Abstract:

The production and processing of small ruminants' milk are alternative economic activities for small rural entrepreneurs and are expanding in Brazil. This article aims to identify the current situation of the goat and sheep dairy value chains in Goiás and Distrito Federal and analyze the competitiveness of these value chains, through a comparison of their competitiveness drivers with those of other Brazilian regions, where these chains are more structured. Therefore, a questionnaire was applied with 9 key agents of these chains, within the study region, and 28 from other locations. Through the analysis of the results, the goat and sheep dairy value chains in Goiás and Distrito Federal were characterized as competitive at the time of the study. However, the "firm's management", "technology and innovation", and "quality" drivers were advertised as probable limitations that need to be improved so that these chains remain competitive.
