A história das revistas científicas brasileiras está repleta de altos e baixos. Dentre as inúmeras que foram criadas, poucas conseguiram sobreviver ao tempo, por uma razão muito simples: a sociedade brasileira nunca considerou seus periódicos como arquivos de cultura e como instrumento para expressar a ciência feita no país. Uma das razões disto foi o padrão de cultura imposto pela colonização portuguesa, que nos obrigava a aceitar como de qualidade tudo o que vinha de além mar, amordaçando, assim, o nosso sentimento de liberdade. Por isto, o Brasil foi um dos últimos países a conhecer a tipografia. Vivemos boa parte da nossa existência como nação, como se não tivéssemos passado e com grandes dificuldades na sua construção. Felizmente, a realidade foi aos poucos se alterando. Aos mais pessimistas é bom lembrar que a República tem pouco mais de 100 anos e a Sociedade Brasileira de Química, menos de 25 anos. Não foram muitos os que acreditaram que a SBQ pudesse se manter viva por mais de dez anos e que pudesse criar e manter três revistas, duas destas indexadas aos principais bancos de dados da ciência mundial e uma voltada totalmente para a educação em Química. O prestígio da SBQ e de suas três revistas é uma prova de que se pode construir o passado, basta planejar a materialização do futuro. É dentro deste espírito que as novas mudanças no Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society estão sendo planejadas para o próximo milênio, já com a incorporação de novos editores. A renovação é uma das estratégias para assegurar a continuidade da revista.
Manter a periodicidade e o padrão de qualidade do JBCS não é uma tarefa das mais fáceis. Mas, vê-lo firmar-se internacionalmente e, principalmente, ter o reconhecimento da comu nidade química brasileira é muito gratificante. É uma prova de quc vale a pena o esforço.
Nessa oportunidade, no aniversário de 10 anos do JBCS, os editores agradecem o apoio que tiveram da Diretoria da SBQ,do Programa de Apoio a Publicações Científicas MCT/CNPq/FINEP, da FAPESP, da FUJB e, principalmente dos autores e dos assessores, que são, anonimamente, o filtro principal da qualidade da revista. A estes é creditado o sucesso do JBCS.

The history of Brazilian scientific journals is full of highs and lows. Few of the innumerous that were created managed to survive for any length of time, for a very simple reason: Brazilian society has never considered its' periodicals as cultural archives and as an instrument for expressing the science developed in the country. One of the reasons was the standard of culture imposed by the Portuguese colonization, and in this way gagging our feelings of freedom. Because of this, Brazil was one of the last countries to know the printing press. We have lived the best part of our existence as a nation, as if we did not have a past and with great difficulty in its'construction. Fortunately, the reality was changed little by little. For the more pessimistic it is good to remember that the Republic has a little more than 100 years, and that the Brazilian Chemistry Society has less than 25 years. There were not many people that believed that SBQ would survive for more than 10 years, and that it could create and maintain three journals, two of which are indexed in the most important scientific databanks in the world, and one being devoted to education in chemistry. The prestige of the SBQ and of its three journals is a proof that if you could construct the past, it is enough to plan the materialization of the future. lt is within this spirit that the new changes in the Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society are being planned for the next millenium, new editors have already been incorporated. The renewal is one of the strategics for ensuring the continuity of the journal.
To maintain the frequency and the level of quality of JBCS is not one of the easiest tasks, but to see it secure itself internationally and, principally, to have the recognition of the Brazilian chemical community is very satisfying. A proof that the dedication is worthwhile.
With this opportunity, on the 10th anniversary of JBCS, the editors wish to thank the support that they received from the administration of SBQ, from the program for support for scientific publications MCT/CNPq/FINEP, from FAPESP, from FUJB, and principally from the authors and the referees that are, anonymously, the filter for the quality of the journal. The success of the JBCS is credited to all those involved.
