It is a great pleasure to introduce this special issue of the Journal of the Brazilian Computer Society in honor of Jayme Luiz Szwarcfiter's 60th birthday. This issue comprises contributions from several influential members of the international community in the areas of theoretical computer science and discrete mathematics, including former collaborators and students of Jayme's. They all responded enthusiastically when we first approached them with an invitation to submit a paper to the special issue, and also subsequently through the various stages of paper review and final formatting. To all of them, our sincere thanks.

In preparing this special issue, we have attempted to sample from different aspects of Jayme's research interests, and have done our best to accommodate in the limited space of one single issue as representative a number of papers as possible. The opening paper is by Cláudio Leonardo Lucchesi, who gives a comprehensive view of Jayme's numerous achievements. This paper contains an account of Jayme's contributions to graph theory and to theoretical computer science, and provides for some of his papers an overview of the main ideas presented in them. The other papers in this issue—written by authors from Argentina, Brazil, Germany, Italy, Israel, Mexico, Poland, the United Kingdom, and the United States—stand witness to Jayme's international recognition, as well as to the scope of his research.

In our preparation of this special issue we have been greatly aided by several researchers (most of whom former students of Jayme's), who contributed their expertise in reviewing the papers. Our thanks to Andrea Richa, Edson Cáceres, Eduardo Laber, Fábio Protti, Iris Yan, Lucia Penso, Márcia Cerioli, Ricardo Corrêa, and Rommel Barbosa.

Our wish is that Jayme's dedication and achievements continue to be a source of inspiration to all of us for many years to come.
