Machado de Assis' critical ideas

This article, "Machado de Assis' critical ideas", dated of 1951 and published in 1952, addresses the interest and importance of Machado as a critic, at that time a less studied facet of Dom Casmurro's author. The article identifies Machado's main reflections on his own work and also on literature in general. It is based on a quite exhaustive survey of his ideas, found in his critical work, dealing with topics such as realism; universalism, nationalism and local color; the theater and the dramatic scene; and travel literature. This is the homage Machado de Assis em linha pays to the Machadian José Aderaldo Castello, who died in 2011 at the age of 90.
