Theories of Moral Development and Medical Education: a Pedagogical Proposal Focused on the Student's Autonomy

Abstract:

The issue of teaching ethics to the health professions is far from being adequately settled. In the final analysis, the doubts permeate various areas, from deep inquiry into the nature of ethics to the questioning about the possibility of teaching the subject and the best way to do so. Although it is beyond the scope of this article to answer these questions -perhaps an entire life's endeavor - the authors briefly contextualize the moral development based on Elliot Turel's theory of sociomoral development, in a reflection on the possibility of implementing teaching practices grounded in such premises, together with a concept of education that situates the professor as a facilitator for the student's autonomy by means of the discussion of ethical issues among medical students.
