Movies for Medical Students: An Effective and Affective Resource in Humamstic Medical Education

Abstract:

Humanism is a critical trait for physician to learn for developing like professionals who are commited to understand and caring for their patients. Humanities and ats are educational resources that can be used to develop future physicians’ humanism. Movies are particular useful resouce for developing medical students’ affeticve domain (i.e. atitudes and beliefes). Teaching in the affective domain requires innovative instructional stategies that meet our learners’ nedds and with techniques that are current and fit the stuudents’ culture. These strategies must move beyond lecturing about theoretical concepts to using modalities that stir learners’ emotions, provide visual images, and promote thinking and reflexion. The authors’ approach invokes learners’ emotins, aids the construction of concepts through relefctions in groups, helps them lear new ways to strengten physician/patiant relationships and communication skills, and gives them a framework to reflect on and apply these importante concepts in their daily lives. This innovative learning process aims to encourage the future physicians to become self-directed learners and develop career commitments. This methodology can be used in several educational sets for medical students and requires theachers who are familiar to humanities and to the student centered learning process.
