“The evangelicals” as our “others”: on religion, rights and democracy

Abstract: In this paper, I problematize the boundaries of the opposition “we” and “the evangelicals”, operationalized in conflicts in which militants and academics are implicated in the political guidelines mobilized by members of the “evangelical bench” and related to gender and sexuality. Such problematization takes place from three narrative excerpts, two “ethnographic” and one “lawyer”. The analytical treatment of these excerpts aims to a) locate the “religiosities” among the experiences that constitute social relations of class, gender, sexuality etc.; and b) to thematize the connections between these “religiosities”, especially the “evangelicals” ones, and the processes of production of rights and the democratic experience. Thereby, the opposition “we” and “the evangelicals” is called into question as it is located within the conflicts around the boundaries of democracy.
