Despite the remarkable development of academic research in Brazil in recent years, Brazilian sociologists have given little importance to education as a subject of research and thematic specialization. Formerly, the situation was different, when, in the fifties and sixties, Educational Sociology benefitted from production of knowledge. The article tries to broach the issue of this underrating, in the attempt to explain it from the social framework of direct university production, correlated to the internal organization of teaching and research, the "new" social division of academic work brought about by the University Reform of 1968 fostered by the military regime, which institude the Faculties of Education. As a related problem and throughout the explanation, the autor emphasizes dilletantism in teaching.
