Proximity and mobility in inabiting in the urban periphery: an entropy experience in property guardians

Abstract

Inhabiting the urban periphery circumscribes the population that experiences difficulties in mobility and accessibility to transport services, where distance and time are at the mercy of the urban layout imposed by the dispersed housing model. This study analyzes the entropic experience in the proximity and mobility of the so-called “property guardians”. For this, the case of Jardines de La Calera, in the peri-urbanization of the metropolis of Guadalajara, Mexico, was reviewed; a population made up of owners and workers who care for the properties. Methodologically, a qualitative-quantitative exercise was carried out, through the analysis of thematic content, surveys, and structured interviews, using statistical instrumentation and the qualitative snowball technique. It was found that there are guards who assign times of up to 30 minutes walking to get to the boarding points of public transport, which usually takes between 30 and 45 minutes in the best of cases, and up to an hour of time between a unit and other. In short, the entropy in the proximity-mobility nexus circumscribes insufficiencies in infrastructures, transport systems and basic equipment, which compromise the reduction of travel times and risks, and discourage possible increases in the consumption of private vehicles.
