Instructions to authors

Editorial policy

The Journal of School of Nursing – University of São Paulo (Revista da Escola de Enfermagem da USP – REEUSP), maintained by the School of Nursing of the University of São Paulo, is an official agency for the dissemination of scientific knowledge in Nursing and related areas.

It accepts scientific articles that provide an original and unpublished contribution to the construction of knowledge, which represent advances for the clinical practice, teaching, or research in Nursing and health.

Since 2017, it has adopted the rolling pass system, with one volume per year, in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, making its articles fully available in the electronic version: https://www.scielo.br/reeusp.

All published articles will receive a DOI (Digital Object Identifier) number.

Article evaluation policy

All scientific texts submitted to REEUSP undergo peer review, preserving the anonymity of authors and reviewers, except for manuscripts deposited in preprint, whose authors can be viewed by the reviewers.

The name of the Associate Editor conducting the evaluation will be disclosed in each published article.

The Scientific Editor preliminarily analyzes the text and decides whether or not the manuscript will continue in the editorial process. If approved, the manuscript goes to an Associate Editor, who decides for continuity in the editorial process and sends it to two independent reviewers for their opinion. At the final stage, based on the evaluation of the reviewers and the recommendation of the Associate Editor, the Scientific Editor decides whether to approve or reject the manuscript.

Research ethics and integrity policy

REEUSP adopts the codes of ethical conduct and publication of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the "Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals," and the Vancouver style of reference citation.

Approval by the Research Ethics Commitee (CEP Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa) and Declaration of Informed Consent (TCLE Termo de Consentimento Livre e Esclarecido)

In research involving human beings, one must send:

  • a copy of the approval by the Research Ethics Committee (CEP) of the National Research Ethics Commission (CONEP Comissão Nacional de Ética em Pesquisa), in accordance with the regulations of the National Health Council (CNS) or equivalent agency in the country of origin of the research.
  • TCLE;
  • CEP approval and TCLE must be mentioned in Ethical Aspects of the manuscript.

In research involving animals, the approval of the Ethics Committee on the Use of Animals is required.

Anti-plagiarism policy

For similarity detection, REEUSP uses the iThenticate software, which analyzes the content of submitted manuscripts. Those who present similarity with others already published will be excluded from the evaluation process.

Incentive to Open Science

Data Repositories

REEUSP encourages the sharing of research data in Open Access repositories. It is understood as research data: models, methods, reports, software, procedures, questionnaires, statistics, that is, data that can be shared and potentially useful for the development of new research.

REEUSP supports the transparent and accessible sharing of knowledge by collaborative networks and adopts the FAIR (find, access, interoperate, and reuse data) principles. The published contents are under license from Creative Commons (CC-BY).

Preprints

The preprint consists of a version of the manuscript not yet peer-reviewed.

REEUSP follows the recommendations of Transparency and Openness Promotion (TOP) and accepts manuscripts deposited on non-commercial preprint servers, such as SciELO Preprints.

Instructions to the Authors

The manuscript can be submitted in Portuguese, English, or Spanish and must be exclusively addressed to REEUSP. Simultaneous submission of the manuscript to another journal, in whole or in part, is not permitted.

It must be submitted online to the ScholarOne system, accompanied by a letter to the Scientific Editor, highlighting the advances and contributions of the text compared to recent publications already published on the subject. In addition, it must inform the reasons why REEUSP was selected for submission.

All authors must present the ORCID registration number in their ScholarOne profile and inform it at the time of submission.

There is no limit on the number of authors, but the persons designated as authors must have participated substantially in the preparation of the manuscript and assume responsibility for its content. The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) recommends authorship to be based on substantial contributions:

a) on the conception or design of the study;

b) on the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data;

c) on the writing of the article or on its critical review;

d) on the final approval of the version to be published.

To indicate authors´contributions, it is recommended to use the CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy).

Thus, in the submission of the manuscript, the authors must write their names in full, inform in detail their contribution, sign and send the Statement of Responsability and Copyright.

If there is any conflict of interest, the authors must inform at the time of submission.

The conflicts of interests may be of a personal, commercial, political, academic of financial nature. The conflicts of interests may occur between authors, reviewers or editors.

The authors must indicate four possible reviewers for the evaluation of the manuscript. These must necessarily be doctors, who can be located in the Lattes Platform or ORCID according to the theme of the manuscript; they also must not have a conflict of interest and not belong to the institutions of any of the authors. The names may or may not be accepted by the Associate Editors.

REEUSP requests the completion of the Open Science Compliance Form – SciELO and the Data Availability Statement, which must be mandatorily attached to the ScholarOne system as complementary files for reviewer evaluation.

To carry out the deposit of Research Data, the authors must choose the repository they feel is best suited to share their data and conduct the deposit. Several open access repositories are available, such as: SciELO Data, Repositório de Dados Científicos da USP, and Harvard Dataverse.

The author must inform REEUSP what is the DOI number assigned to the research data and/or the preprint and the name of the server where it was deposited. The material must comply with the Creative Commons license for data sharing and be cited as “Data Availability” after the “Ethical Aspects” section of the manuscript.

The approved manuscript must be reviewed by a professional accredited by REEUSP and translated into English if the original language is Portuguese or Spanish.

Manuscript Qualification Strategies

REEUSP adopts qualification strategies for the publication of research studies, such as those of the World Health Organization (WHO), International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), and Enhancing the Quality and Transparency of Health Research (EQUATOR Network). These are resources that favor the potential of publication and its use in research references.

Below, some validated international protocols to be used according to the research design are presented:

Clinical Trials: CONSORT (Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials) and identification of Clinical Trial Registries validated by the criteria established by WHO and ICMJE, whose addresses are available on the website of ICMJE. The identification number must appear at the end of the abstract.

Observational Studies: STROBE (Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology).

Qualitative Studies: COREQ (Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research).

Note: Protocols of other types of studies are found in the EQUATOR Network and in the article by Larson EL, Cortazal M. Publication guidelines need widespread adoption. J Clinical Epidemiol. 2012;65:239-46. DOI: 10.1016/j.jclinepi.2011.07.008

Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses: PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses), for quantitative reviews, and ENTREQ (Enhancing Transparency in Reporting the Synthesis of Qualitative Research), for qualitative reviews.

Scoping Reviews: PRISMA-ScR (PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews: Checklist and Explanation).
