Is surgery for proliferative vitreoretinopathy following perforating ocular injury justifiable?

RESUMO

Objetivo:

Determinar o prognóstico e a satisfação dos pacientes com trauma ocular perfurante que foram submetidos à cirurgia para proliferação vítreo-retiniana (PVR).

Métodos:

Prontuários de sessenta pacientes foram reavaliados para caracterizar a taxa de sucesso cirúrgico anatômico e funcional. Trinta pacientes foram selecionados de modo aleatório e questionados por telefone.

Resultados:

Houve melhora visual para a maioria dos pacientes. Trinta e cinco pacientes (58,3%) apresentavam a retina colada no final do seguimento. Em média, 2,89 cirurgias foram realizadas por olho. Dezenove (63,3%) pacientes afirmaram que voltariam a operar novamente e 14 (46,6%) que o ganho de campo periférico foi de beneficio.

Conclusão:

Essa forma de tratamento deve ser oferecida e a decisão final deve ser tomada pelo paciente bem orientado e seu médico.

SUMMARY

Objective:

To determine the outcome and satisfaction of ocular trauma patients with perforating injury that underwent surgery for proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR).

Methods:

Charts of sixty patients who were reviewed to assess anatomic status and visual outcome. Thirty patients chosen at random were contacted by telephone.

Results:

Vision improved in most patients. Thirty five (58.3%) patients had an attached retina. A mean of 2. 89 PVR operations were performed per eye. Nineteen (63.3%) patients stated that they would still have had surgery and 14 (46.6%) that the peripheral vision gained was of benefit.

Conclusion:

This form of treatment should be offered to patients and the decision to proceed with surgery should be made by a well-informed patient.
