A recente indexação do Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society no Current Contents, a mais prestigiosa das publicações do Instituto de Informação Científica (ISI), assegura aos autores que publicam na revista que seus trabalhos serão lidos por colegas acadêmicos de todo o mundo. Se, por um lado, a indexação é o coroamento do esforço de muitos, que começou quando a SBQ decidiu publicar uma revista científica brasileira de Química em inglês, por outro, aumenta enormemente a responsabilidade dos autores, dos editores e dos árbitros. Dos autores, porque seus trabalhos terão maior visibilidade já que ocuparão as estantes das principais bibliotecas do mundo, e porque deles se espera, cada vez mais, contribuições originais para o aprimoramento da revista. Dos editores, porque terão a responsabilidade, independentemente de crises financeiras, de manter a periodicidade da revista, para que o JBCS não seja mais uma daquelas revistas latinoamericanas que como entram, saem do Current Contents. Mas, depende principalmente dos árbitros, porque caberá a eles manter a qualidade dos artigos e, em consequência, a continuidade do reconhecimento internacional obtido pela revista.

Muitos leitores estarão, a esta altura, perguntando o que significa uma revista científica brasileira, quando projeções hipotéticas apontam para um universo de 1.000.000 de revistas no ano 2000, e quando as principais agências brasileiras de fomento à pesquisa distinguem entre artigos publicados em periódicos nacionais e aqueles publicados em periódicos estrangeiros? Ora, a quantidade de revistas científicas indexadas de um país é um dos indicadores da maturidade de sua comunidade científica e é inadmissível que um país detentor da nona indústria química mundial não tenha uma revista de Química a altura de seu parque industrial.

Além disto, os comitês das agências brasileiras de fomento à pesquisa estão totalmente equivocadas e devem mudar seu procedimento quando distinguem revistas científicas com base em sua nacionalidade, quando o certo é considerar se as revistas são indexadas ou não, se utilizam ou não o processo de revisão pelos pares. Mas sendo o JBCS a única revista brasileira da área de Ciências Exatas indexada ao Current Contents, fica a certeza de que os Comitês das agências procederão corretamente daqui para frente.

A próxima etapa é conferir ao JBCS um fator de impacto compatível com sua qualidade e importância. Para que isto se concretize os editores conclamam autores e árbitros a continuarem dando o melhor de si à revista.

The recent decision by Current Contents, the most prestigious of the publications of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), to index the Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society (JBCS) assures the authors of the Journal that their articles will be read by academic colleagues throughout the world. This indexing represents the culmination of the combined efforts of many colleagues, which began when the Brazilian Chemical Society (SBQ) decided to publish a chemical journal in English. At the same time, however, indexing greatly enhances the responsibility of the authors, Editors and referees of the Journal. The authors’ responsibility derives from the greater visibility of their articles on library shelves worldwide and the ever-increasing necessity for original contributions that will enhance the prestige of the Journal. The Editors will be obliged to maintain the periodicity of the Journal despite local economic crises, to keep the JBCS from becoming just one more Latin American journal of ephemeral existence in Current Contents. Last, but not least, the referees will share a major portion of the responsibility for maintaining the high scientific standards of the papers published and, consequently, the continuity of the international recognition already achieved by the Journal.

Many readers will perhaps question the relevance of a Brazilian scientific journal when hypothetical projections suggest that, by the year 2000, there will be approximately one million journals in existence and when the major Brazilian research funding agencies discriminate between articles published in "national" and "international" journals. Evidently, the number of indexed scientific journals published in a country is an indicator of the maturity of its scientific community. In this regard, it is inadmissible that Brazil, a country that has the ninth ranking chemical industry in the world, does not possess a chemical journal of the same caliber.

Clearly, the basic criteria for ranking scientific journals should be whether the journal is indexed internationally and whether the articles accepted by the journal are subjected to rigorous, scientific peer review. Now that the JBCS has become the only Brazilian publication in the field of Exact Sciences indexed in Current Contents, the decision-making committees of Brazilian funding agencies will be required to reexamine and, presumably, rectify the current criterion of discriminating scientific periodicals of national origin.

The next important step will be for JBCS to achieve and maintain an impact factor compatible with its quality and importance. With this goal in mind, the Editors exhort both authors and referees to continue to dedicate their best to the Journal.
