The profile of our editorial changes in this number. I will be continuing to share news with our readers whenever there is something new about the journal. The editorial of this number will bring a brief analysis of the papers here presented.

What can be highlighted in our second number of this year is the concern of our authors with the search for objectiveness in our methodologies and with the assessment of the efficacy of our procedures. This will definitely be determinant for our internacionalization and impact. There was great development regarding the outline of our research and case studies. We can still develop more, avoiding single case studies or single group studies (even if experimental) with no control; with the systematic application of pre and post tests in experimental and contingent control groups; with the use of more significant population samples; with the use of statistical tests that are more sophisticated and that have a higher fidelity.

Among our papers, Durante et al. (2005) present an important and epidemiological relevant study, about the analysis of otoacoustic emissions in 1000 infants. The results indicate that the level of these emissions is influenced by gender and ear. Another important result is that there is no difference between the emissions of newborns with and without auditory risk. The need for new considerations about the now existing criteria of auditory risk for newborns should be considered.

Delgado and Halpern (2005) present a study describing the process of breastfeeding (interview, assessment of oral and attachment signs) in very low weight premature infants. The results corroborate with previews findings about the influence of stomatognathic neuromotor maturity. The research contributes for considerations about maternal-child bonding.

The research of Ramos and Pereira (2005) about auditory processing and auditory sensibility to high frequency sounds was done with 32 children of the fourth grade of junior school. The results indicate that for most of the children deficits were not identified.

Oliveira et al. (2005) presented a study about the effectiveness of speech-language training in laryngectomized patients with tracheoesophageal prostheses. The research was done with 17 participants and included the comparison between pre and post training. Variations in the findings were validated by judges. The results point to a significant improvement of speech and of its melodic aspects.

The theme of the study proposed by Paula et al. (2005) refers to phonological awareness and literacy. There was an experimental group which was submitted to intervention and a control group. The results indicated that intervention, aiming at phonological awareness, favors the acquisition of the alphabetic code.

Cárnio and Santos (2005) also did a study based on phonological awareness as the basis of a speech-language stimulation program. The obtained results indicate that the procedure was effective in the literacy process.

Wertzner et al. (2005) propose a correlation study between the objective and perceptual assessment of the severity index of phonological disorder. In a universe of 50 subjects and 60 judges, a correlation between the two variables was found.

For Béfi-Lopes and Rodrigues (2005) the difficulties in oral language after childhood persist and are related to the reading and writing abilities, as well as with the future success of individuals with SLI. A study of an adolescent is presented in which the authors conclude that although the linguistic manifestations modified themselves after a period of time, problems with language and learning persist and have educational and social consequences.

Calais et al. (2005) present a study of nine cases with the functional assessment of the facial muscles of patients with facial paralysis after a cerebrovascular accident. The assessment of spontaneous, reflex and voluntary movements indicated that all patients presented voluntary and involuntary movements of the upper eyelids and forehead, but movements of the lips and nose were impaired in both situations due to the localization and extension of lesion.

The study presented by De Vitto et al. (2005) was done with two participants and refers to the auditory abilities in macrosomic syndromes. The results of this study indicate that little is known about the neurophysiology of hearing in this population and that the Speech-language and Hearing Science could contribute for the development of diagnosis and of the intervention process.

Almeida et al. (2005) present a case study of a girl with athetoid quadriplegia and her development using an intervention method based on adapted-Pecs and on PCS. The result of the procedure indicates that the adapted-Pecs was effective for the improvement of communication and educational abilities of the child.

Silveira and Brasalotto (2005) also present a case study, with five participants, with the purpose of assessing the efficacy of vocal rehabilitation procedures used with patients with idiopathic Parkinson disease. The method used was the LSTV, which demonstrated to be efficient for the improvement of articulation, vocal intensity and overall qualities, leaving the patients and their families satisfied.

The literature review proposed by Dreossi and Momensohn-Santos (2005) focused on the influence of the acoustic environment over learning.

Trindade et al. (2005) proposed - based on scores given to: hypernasality, nasal air emission and compensatory articulation deficits - an objective method to assess velopharyngeal function.

The book of Victoria Secaf about methodology and elaboration of a scientific text is reviewed by Bonatto and Samczuk (2005). In this review, besides pointing to the strictly methodological aspects of the book, other important issues are commented by the authors.

Finalizing, an important translation for our editorial, our own and for the Speech-language and Hearing Science development is presented by Sassi et al. (2005). This translation consists of a guide for the practice of ethics in scientific publication. The text is counseling for authors and scientific editors, having as a purpose to find practical ways to deal with ethical issues of scientific publication.

Regards,

Claudia.
