    Cruz, Vera; Albuquerque, Cristina P.

This study analyses characteristics of the association between disability and/or developmental disorders and abuse among Portuguese children and youth. It also underscores the consequences of this association for special education. The sample consists of 198 children and adolescents with disabilities and/or developmental disorders that were abused. The data was collected using a checklist designed specifically for this study, completed by psychologists and social workers. The results showed that the most frequent type of abuse was a combination of two or more types of maltreatment, followed by neglect. The most frequent perpetrators were the parents, who were also the children's main caretakers. Abuse was identified early, usually at age 4, and mainly by institutions or services that were already following the families. A high percentage of physical and mental health problems, substance abuse and social inclusion difficulties in the parents of these children and adolescents was also observed. After identification of abuse, almost all of these children and families benefitted from some kind of intervention. In conclusion, since abuse usually occurs early and in families with multiple risk factors, we indicate the need for family intervention strategies and highlight the importance of early childhood intervention programs. The role that teachers play in screening abuse is also pointed out, as well as the relevance of setting up programs directed towards the acquisition of self-protection skills.

Speech has been regarded as a social communicative modality required for building relationships in different contexts and cultures. Nevertheless, this is not always a readily available resource, especially for those who have developmental disorders. In this sense, Augmentative and Alternative Communication resources and strategies have been used by nonspeaking students with disabilities as useful tools to achieve greater social participation in different environments. Therefore, the present study examined the interaction between teachers and a student with cerebral palsy before and after the use of Alternative Communication strategies in the classroom. The study had a quantitative and qualitative nature and was designed as an intervention study. There were four main stages: 1) filming before the introduction of the resources in the classroom, 2) training the school teachers 3) providing technical assistance regarding the use of alternative communication to the child's teacher 4) filming teacher-student interactions using these technological resources. The interactions were transcribed and grouped into links. In this research, a link means the initiator's behavior directed to the exchange partner and the response in sequence from the interlocutor back to the initiator. It was found that the established interactions presented a maximum of four links, with greater frequency for episodes of 1st and 2nd links. After the intervention, there were different contexts with the presence of interactions up to the 6th link, often greater frequency for episodes of 1st, 2nd and 3rd links. In addition, the teacher showed a tendency to use symbols only as a tool for evaluating and teaching concepts. This perception changed as the teacher became familiarized with the Augmentative and Alternative Communication technology resources.

This article examines and discusses the different forms of Specialized Educational Support offered to students with deafblindness, in Basic Education, in regular schools of the city of Salvador, Bahia, pointing out significant aspects, highlighted the barriers and opportunities to meet the special needs of these students . This work is part of a doctorate research in education and has a qualitative approach, the case study, taking as sample, four deafblind students, three of them are in elementary school, and one in a high school. The instrument for colect the information was an interview with the professionals and the data were organized using three categories: the dynamics of the Specialized Educational Support, the action of the professional development in the Specialized Educational Support and the connection between the Specialized Educational Support and the special needs of students with deafblindness. The results indicated: the absence of a planned action, leading an improvisations and fragmentation of the Specialized Educational Support; isolation of professionals. This situation originates in pedagogical actions disjointed between the regular classroom teachers and specialists; ignore the special educational needs of students with deafblindness with consequent invisibility of these students in school.

Vilaronga, Carla Ariela Rios; Caiado, Katia Regina Moreno

In Brazil, the processes by means of which people with disabilities access schooling are quite unique. Despite the specific policies and legislation that has been enacted in the field in recent years, states and municipalities have structured service delivery in different ways, setting up distinct educational proposals for students with disabilities. Based on this context, the aim of this study was to describe and analyze the trajectories and expectations of school experience for students with visual impairment, who attended a community course to prepare for university level exams, because they aspired to admission to higher education. Specifically in this text, the focus that was selected was the school career of students with visual impairments from early childhood through the end of middle school. The participants were four persons with visual disabilities who had concluded high school, attended community preparatory course for the college entrance exams in 2011 and planned to enter university. Understanding that we were addressing a synthesis of historical time and social place of the research subjects, we chose the life history approach. One of the issues discussed in this article relates to the consequences of policy changes in special education for the educational experience of this school, especially as regards the relationship between resource classes and regular classrooms. Reports about how unprepared schools and teachers are regarding enabling learning of educational content coincide with the memories of teachers and other school employees who have attempted to encounter their own strategies for teaching these students in the 1990s.

Cechin, Michelle Brugnera Cruz; Costa, Adriana Corrêa; Dorneles, Beatriz Vargas

The objective of this study was to identify procedures used for counting by children with intellectual disabilities and to analyze the effects of an intervention program focused on teaching arithmetic facts. Participants were three children between eight and 12 years from a public school in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, whose students come mainly from low socioeconomic families. Based on the review of the literature on the cognitive processes involved in the solution of addition problems and the implications for teaching, we evaluated the efficacy of an educational intervention model as a resource for advancing the use of counting procedures. A ten-meeting program was implemented. These meetings were held once a week and lasted approximately fifty minutes. The proposal consisted of direct, explicit, and systematic teaching by means of instruction sequences, based on the counting procedures used by the students, who were evaluated at two different times (pretest and post test). We found that there was improvement in the counting procedures used by the children after the intervention, revealing that the program was effective. Even brief interventions, such as the present study, can bring important benefits for children with intellectual disability. Such benefits will be the basis of their future knowledge.

The school inclusion paradigm points to the need for organizational restructuring of regular educational institutions. Therefore, a network of support and cooperation is necessary among the sectors of education, health and social care. This paper investigates what regular school teachers think about the collaboration of physiotherapists in this process. This is a qualitative study using an exploratory approach; data was collected using a questionnaire administered to 22 teachers from three randomly selected schools and analyzed according to categories. All teachers recognized the importance of health professionals participation to enable the inclusion of students with disabilities, and in the case of physiotherapists, all but one of the teachers stated this helps the inclusion of students with physical disabilities. With the sharing of information between teachers and therapists, and as orientation is carried out, physiotherapy can contribute to school inclusion, however, cooperation would be more effective if there were permanent conditions for debate, reflection and experience exchange among professionals working together in schools.

Bagarollo, Maria Fernanda; Ribeiro, Vanessa Veis; Panhoca, Ivone

Traditional perspectives consider that among the characteristics of autism is the inability or great difficulty these children have for engaging in play activities. However, assuming the historical-cultural perspective of human development - which conceives of subjects as social beings, culturally constituted in and through language - this statement is no longer sustainable, since play is a socially constituted activity. From this standpoint, this study aimed to analyze the peculiarities of play in a child with autism, immersed in rich experiences with other children, with toys and games. Data collection was carried out using video recordings of speech therapy sessions with a group of four autistic children. The focus was on one child's play activities (S1, four years). The recordings were transcribed and data was analyzed based on the microgenetic analysis perspective. The data showed that when autistic children experience positive social interactions, it is possible to develop play, imaginative processes and sequences of actions such as those observed in the group's social and cultural use of toys. We conclude that therapist intervention is critical during the interaction process, assigning meanings to the child's actions, enabling the possibility of constitution of cultural being and of interacting with others. This process helps build the basis for internalizations derived from playing with others. As observed, experiences outside the institution provided opportunities to play and develop during the process, albeit more slowly and more specifically.

The Brazilian Journal of Special Education was first published in 1992 and has been continuously evaluated internally by scholars of the Brazilian Association of Researchers in Special Education, and externally, by Capes and ANPEd. The last evaluation made by Capes indicated a Qualis A2 for the Brazilian Journal of Special Education. The aim of this article is to discuss these evaluations in order to improve the quality of the journal. The proposed evaluation focused on qualitative parameters presented by the Anped assessment, and statistical parameters available by SciELO. The result of this analysis is that the Brazilian Journal of Special Education has similar parameters to journals qualified as A1, and sometimes even higher than those. Discussion of quality improvement of the journal indicated: 1) the need to receive articles via internet through its peer review system; 2) assignment of coeditors to ensure the evaluation flow of submitted manuscripts; 3) investment in infrastructure, such as purchase of computers and software to improve editing and publishing.
