  • A escrita nas formas do trabalho docente Artigos

    Gomes-Santos, Sandoval Nonato

The production of writing at school is a highly respected object of study for several of the domains in the field of language and education. Pursued under different theoretical perspectives and disciplinary traditions, most of the academic reflection on the subject writing, in Brazil, has been concerned with the learning processes of writing by pupils of various age groups, levels of literacy, and schooling within specific sociocultural and institutional contexts. Along a different, but complementary, direction, the present study focuses on the ways in which writing is constituted in the teaching practice, and through which is becomes a taught object (Dolz; Ronveaux; Schneuwly, 2007). To such end, the article is based on a corpus comprised of audio and video recordings of episodes of the teaching of writing produced in different institutional and sociocultural contexts. The way in which the relation is established between the objects of teaching, the professional gestures, and the didactic devices is analyzed (Aeby Daghé; Dolz, 2007; Gomes-Santos; Almeida, 2009; Schneuwly, 2000; 2001). From a theoretical and methodological viewpoint, the questions of the study are illuminated by the contribution of researches on the description of the modes of organization and functioning of language in school interactions, and by studies that center on the specifically didactic dimension of those interactions. The investigation of writing in the practices of teaching has enriched the reflection about the didactic devices needed at the heart of the teaching/learning practices in order to develop active ways to facilitate the access to symbolic goods.

This article aims to bring forward the creative dimension of the teaching knowledges mobilized by a literacy teacher, and is based on the concept of teaching knowledges as developed in the cultural-historical theory. The study was conducted in a public school of the State of Rondônia under an ethnographic approach. The work analyzes two episodes extracted from the school everyday life in order to exemplify how the teaching knowledges are changed and re-created when facing the challenges presented by the pedagogical practice. The results help to understand that the day-to-day teaching practice cannot be described simply as the reproduction of models or proposals used by other professionals. On the contrary, when teacher and class meet there is always an element of originality that demands the creation of forms of intervention specific for that group, under the conditions of that context. Following the work of the teacher during the period of the research made it possible to understand that there are countless possibilities of conduction of the pedagogical work, and that the reasons behind the teachers' choices are grounded in knowledges constructed throughout their experiences of formation and professional activity. It is concluded, therefore, that the pedagogical practices must be known and studied in order to be understood, more than judged, having in mind the contribution of these studies to teacher education.

Marques, Denise Travassos; Pachane, Graziela Giusti

The objective of this study is to highlight the need for better teacher training with respect to the Education of Youngsters and Adults (EJA) and, more specifically, regarding the elderly, a group marked by multiple exclusions and strongly present in EJA classes. The study was based on a survey of the literatures on the Education of Youngsters and Adults, the elderly and teacher education, on the reflection on documents such as the Brazilian Constitution and the Statute of the Elderly, and on the analysis of the experience conducted by the Secretariat for Education of the City of Campinas (SP) through FUMEC (the Campinas Foundation for Community Education). After offering some ideas on the expansion of the number of elderly people in current society, on the prejudices related to growing old, and on the struggle for the rights of the elderly, we focus on the importance of the role of the educator to reverse the state of obscurity to which the elderly is relegated both in the social and in the educational spheres. To that end, we conclude for the need for ruptures regarding the image of the pedagogue and of the field of education in society, strongly linked to the childhood, with the aim of including themes related to the elderly and aging in the pedagogy curricula, as well as of stimulating the debate about the elderly, particularly those from the popular classes, in the field of educational research.

Bassarewan, Aicha Binte Umar; Silvestre, Simone Michelle

East Timor is a new country of the Third Millennium. As a nation with a largely illiterate society of strong oral traditions, it faces many challenges in an era of globalization. Considering the importance of reading to human life, its teaching and learning must be developed from the first years of schooling of East Timorean children, taking into account the socio-cultural and linguistic reality of the country. A case study at Nularan Public School No. 1, in Díli, East Timor on the teaching and learning of reading during the first three years of schooling showed that both the guidelines of the curriculum program and the reference books employed by the school in its work with the students fail to promote the development of reflective reading, and to offer situations in which the child can expose her ideas or communicate having the text as a theme of a group discussion. It is then proposed that the processes of teaching and learning of reading at primary schools should be closely monitored and evaluated, and also that investments should be made in the qualification of human resources, as well as in didactic material and school infrastructure. It must be noted that it is not enough to have quality education inscribed in laws and in the Constitution itself: it is the work of the competent agencies that will achieve the goal of offering to East Timoreans an education in which they grow as active subjects of their discoveries and knowledge, so that they may gain access to a better life for themselves and for the community to which they belong.
  • Escolarização no Brasil: articulando as perspectivas de gênero, raça e classe social Artigos

    Ferraro, Alceu Ravanello

The article presents results of an experiment in articulating the dimensions of gender, race, and social class in the study of the dynamics of schooling in Brazil based on the micro-data of the 2000 Demographic Census. The level of schooling is measured from the average years of study successfully completed by the population aged 10 or more. The study reveals that these three dimensions produce effects that cannot be simply added to each other, because they follow different logics. As we move from the older generations to the younger, women go from a situation of inferiority to one of superiority in terms of average years of schooling, whereas the black population maintains a position of inferiority in relation to the white population across all age groups, although with some reduction in the degree of inequality. In their turn, educational inequalities as related to the professional occupation, taken here as an indication of social class, appear as the most pronounced, both in male and female populations, and among blacks and whites. The text therefore reinforces the importance and possibility of articulating in the study of schooling the dimensions of gender, race, and social class, as recommended in the literature on the subject.

Despite the efforts of the proponents of the teaching of Philosophy to have the subject back into the Secondary School curriculum, we watch nowadays its neglect in higher education. We observe that today, in this normalized society and in the educational sphere, the integral development of thinking is no longer valued, in favor of the transmission of a series of contents which supposedly allow the student to fit into the picture of technological progress and gain access to the labor market. Centering on this context, the present text intends to investigate the space in which the teaching of Philosophy evolves today. By sketching the contours of a problem that emerges in the university institutional spaces where the teaching of Philosophy still subsists, we have attempted to bring forward the bases on which Philosophy is taught. We have also sought to understand what are the consequences for the learning of philosophizing of the different ways to understand the teaching of Philosophy. A conclusion warranted by this study is that the teaching of Philosophy not only fails to give priority to the experience of thinking, but often denies the students the opportunity of doing and having this experience with the philosophical text, thereby contributing to impoverish this same experience of and with the philosophizing.

The notion of nature has played an important role in philosophy and also in Environmental Education. Contemporary philosophers such as Gianni Vattimo and Newton Aquiles von Zuben declare that the notion of a single nature has contributed to the growth of a dogmatic metaphysics that has crystallized political and religious totalitarianisms. Environmental Education in Latin America has constituted a theoretical field and a privileged public space for the diffusion of non-dogmatic, non-totalitarian, notions of nature in close relationship to cultural and social diversity. At a first moment of Environmental Education the notion of nature was linked to natural resources. However, after specific themes related to the contemporary discourses about nature, such as transgenetics and biodiversity, have gained the public sphere we argue that Environmental Education has been facing new theoretical, political, ecological, social, cultural and pedagogical challenges. In the present article we try to identify and analyze some of these challenges, having as our theoretical foundation the ideas of Italian thinker Gianni Vattimo, and of Brazilian philosopher Newton Aquiles von Zuben, on the aspects related to bioethics and to the political role of education in the formation of citizens. We conclude that the approach to nature present in contemporary discourses helps to open out the dialogue between Environmental Education and bioethics, and to materialize it in daily social and pedagogical practices, thus representing a concrete alternative to allow citizens to face up to the challenges brought about by biodiversity and the transgenics with scientific, ethical and political arguments.

The present article deals with theoretical-methodological questions of a doctoral research that applied the Foucauldian approach to the 16th-century Jesuit Letters. The research recovers important notions of Foucault's work, such as genealogy, power, knowledge, descent, and emergence, not as a simple literature survey, but as a way to problematize the object under investigation. With that, we have done of Foucault what he described having done of Nietzsche: a toolbox to help thinking about a problem that the philosopher himself did not investigate. In this way, the article seeks to show how the author devised a genealogical history of education based on the following question: what was the pedagogy with which the Western apprentice was educated before the "discovery" of Brazil, and how could this pedagogy be applied, denied, and adapted in colonial Brazil in the confrontation between Jesuits, Europeans, and Indians? It brings forward the notion of gathering someone else's child - a procedure employed by the Jesuits to recruit and educate the children of the heathen in 16th-century Portuguese America. Methodologically, it reveals the discursive/enunciative regularities of the Jesuit Letters (especially in the reports of Father Manuel da Nóbrega), which means taking them as something that crosses a domain of possible structures and unities, and thereby makes them appear as concrete contents in time and space. In other words, the study establishes how, in these letters, a given procedure for the act of teaching is imposed onto the educative practices of the 16th century.

This text takes Liberty, one of the flags of the French Revolution, as an emblematic figure of modern episteme, which gives support to the production of a particular moral subject. For that, it examines parts of doctoral theses presented in 2006 to the Graduate Program in Education Studies of the University of Vale dos Sinos (Unisinos). With Friedrich Nietzsche and Michel Foucault, it problematizes the concept of liberty, establishing war as the condition of possibility for the constitution of practices of freedom. It is concerned with showing some of the potential effects of these discourses upon education, and to such purpose takes the Nietzschean critique of freedom in its twofold character: the freedom to think, and the freedom to wish, both inscribed into the fundamental prejudice of the unity of consciousness. It makes use of Foucault's critique to the Enlightenment with its deep influence on modern ideals, and also firmly present in education. With his notion of practices of freedom, the article problematizes this modern emblem as a thinking resource that, far from functioning as a redemption of thought or will, is a possibility for the construction of our lives as an aesthetic work. With that, it seeks to reveal aspects of the modern episteme that, to this day, serve as the ground for the composition of the moral operated by education.

This article has a theoretical character and presents some of Weber's ideas, with emphasis on those that can supply elements to reflect on the current state of education, more particularly based on his understanding of modernity. Disenchantment of the world is the key concept in his sociology, and is taken as the basis for a reflection about the meaning that science and the teacher can have today. A classic author, Weber's interpretation of the modern world brings to our consideration a variety of themes that influence markedly the thinking and practice of contemporary culture by its concern with understanding human actions and values. By studying the Western process of rationalization, he initiates debates in science, in ethics and, correspondingly, in education, allowing us to expand our comprehension of the meaning, significance, and role of our actions towards knowledge and teaching. The main object of education is to offer students contents that stimulate the freedom of thought. For that, the teacher needs to adopt a non-partisan ethics in the classroom, presenting contents unbiased by her/his political opinions and, if failing to do so, having the honesty to explain what she/he is doing. It is therefore of the utmost importance that the teacher should keep a "neutral" position, so that in and out of the classroom the students may reflect and question what they see, experiment and decide upon. Only then the conduct of the teacher will be consistent with the process of rationalization of our culture.

Understanding the modernity of Dewey's pedagogical proposal requires a careful appraisal of his concept of educative experience. Actually, his educational philosophy is grounded on a theory of experience, insofar as it rests upon a connection between personal experience and learning whose aim is the progressive enlargement of that experience. In the present article we make use of some of his main pedagogical works to characterize the concept of educative experience, starting with the distinction between educative experience and experience pure and simple. Whilst the fundamental dimensions of any experience are continuity and interaction, the educative experience is distinguished by the quality of these dimensions in promoting the subject's development, that is, the growth and widening of his/her previous experience. After clarifying this concept, we seek to understand its impact for the organization of an indirect teaching based on a cooperative search, and for conceptions of curriculum and the role of pupils and teacher. Still considering the centrality of the concept of educative experience, we try to unveil the deep nexus between progressive education and democratic education, whose key is the social reality of the intelligence heightened by democratic environments, apart from the nexus between education and democracy.

This paper employs new regionalism theory and regulatory regionalism theory in its analysis and theorisation of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) as a counter-hegemonic Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) regionalism. As (initially) the regionalisation of Venezuela's Bolivarian Revolution, ALBA is centred around the idea of a 21st Century Socialism that replaces the 'competitive advantage' with the 'cooperative advantage'. ALBA, as a set of multi-dimensional inter- and transnational processes, operates within and across a range of sectors and scales whilst the structural transformations are driven by the interplay of state and non-state actors. The Venezuelan government's Higher Education For All (HEFA) policy, which is being regionalised within an emergent ALBA education space, assumes a key role in the direct democratic and participatory democratic processes upon which a bottom-up construction of counter-hegemony depends. HEFA challenges the globalised neoliberal higher education agenda of commoditisation, privatisation and elitism. Rather than producing enterprising subjects fashioned for global capitalism, HEFA seeks to form subjectivities along the moral values of solidarity and cooperation.
  • A infância enquanto categoria estrutural Tradução

    Qvortrup, Jens

In northern countries, a symbol of the consolidation of a knowledge area is the publication of a handbook - in Portuguese, manual or compendium - whose chapters give a state-of-the-art overview of their respective subjects. In 2009, The Palgrave Handbook of Childhood Studies was published as recognition of the area of childhood studies. It is known that children were mainly investigated by psychology or by pedagogy and that social sciences have produced little about them, giving priority to studies on the family or the school. Just over twenty years, however, children become the focus of social studies of childhood, as social phenomenon. In this sense, there is the field that investigates children as social agents, producing culture, and childhood as category in the social structure, which increased significantly the production of knowledge about the social relations established between the children themselves (their peers) and with adults (intra and intergenerational relations) on their skills as actors in their lives, as social agents whose actions modify / transform the social worlds in which they are inserted. The text of Professor Jens Qvortrup, responsible for the foundation of the first research group in sociology of childhood (RC53) at the International Sociological Association (ISA), and one of the organizers of the Handbook, focuses childhood as a social structure. Published as first chapter of The Palgrave Handbook of Childhood Studies, the study shows childhood as a segment in a social structure and the applications of a structural perspective, i.e. inserted in the theoretical studies of childhood, the chapter outlines an approach that differs from both research on socialization and studies on child development, providing evidence for the conduct of research that have as their object childhood as a social category, so diverse and complementary to other categories. The reading of the text directs to other important themes, presented by different authors in the other chapters of the Handbook, which makes Brazilian researchers expect the full translation of the book.
