Já nesse ensaio ela compara Machado de Assis a Shakespeare, ideia que retomará e desenvolverá com mais ênfase em The Brazilian Othello of Machado de Assis (1960), e também vê no nosso autor uma chave para a compreensão do Brasil. This is the translation, by Hélio de Seixas Guimarães, of a text published in 1952 by Helen Caldwell, a pioneer in Machadian studies abroad. Here, the essayist compares Machado de Assis to Shakespeare, a topic she would develop more extensively in The Brazilian Othello of Machado de Assis (1960), and also reads the author as a key to the understanding of Brazil. The issue of the belonging and reach of the writer's work is visible from the first lines and to the end of the article the North American scholar examines a curious topic: the presence of the teacher in Machado's novels and short stories.Resumo em Português:

The paper discusses the deviation, conducted by Machado de Assis in Iaiá Garcia, from the expectations of the sentimental narrative and the comparison established between the two love triangles: Jorge, Estela and Luís Garcia, on the one side, and Estela, Jorge and Iaiá Garcia, on the other. Considering the action of the passions and the slave system in the conduct of characters, it analyzes the confrontation between the conventions of love passion and the institution of marriage as a tool for social mobility.Resumo em Português:
Este artigo discute o procedimento estilístico-literário da citação na obra de Machado de Assis, em particular no conto "O alienista". Nele, Machado faz uma pequena emenda nos versos do canto XXXIII do "Inferno" da Comédia, de Dante Alighieri. Essa alteração, defende-se aqui, está ligada ao sistema discursivo do beletrismo local que, por sua vez, modaliza o fazer literário machadiano, que acaba rebaixando a "alta" literatura para poder seguir ainda com o fazer literário.Resumo em Inglês:
This article aims at discussing Machado de Assis' literary and stylistic procedures while quoting other authors, especially in the short story "O alienista". In this work, the writer makes a small correction to a few lines from canto XXXIII of the Divine Comedy's "Inferno", by Dante Alighieri. Our argument is that this correction is linked to the local belletrist discursive system, which in its turn softens Machado's writing, as it downgrades works of "high" literature in order to allow itself to still be seen as literary.Resumo em Português:
Este artigo propõe apresentar algumas questões concernentes ao estudo do aspecto interdiscursivo da escritura machadiana, compreendido aqui como a relação com discursos já-escritos empreendida a partir do espaço da biblioteca. Partiremos de uma sucinta apresentação do percurso histórico da biblioteca pessoal de Machado, a fim de tecer algumas considerações sobre a aproximação entre escrita e leitura, para, em seguida, analisarmos o que chamamos de biblioteca ficcional, isto é, a maneira pela qual a escritura ficcionaliza e relaciona-se com os discursos já-escritos. Nesse movimento, percebe-se que essa interdiscursividade acaba por problematizar as condições de enunciabilidade e de legibilidade da própria obra literária, apontando para o caráter preponderantemente crítico da ficção de Machado de Assis.Resumo em Inglês:
This article aims at presenting some questions regarding the study of the interdiscursivity in Machado's writing, taken here as the relationship with already written discourses, constructed through the space of the library. Having as a starting point a concise exposition of Machado's private library historical course, in order to consider the association between writing and reading, we intend to analyze afterwards what we identify as a fictional library, that is, the manner in which writing fictionalizes these already written discourses and establishes a relationship with them. Thus, we notice that the interdiscursivity brings questions to the enunciability and the legibility of the literary work, revealing the prevailing critical aspect of the Machado de Assis' fiction.Resumo em Português:

O pragmatismo autoritário da narração serve, entretanto, para comprovar uma perspectiva monista: a "alma exterior" termina absorvendo a "alma interior", de modo que a identidade do sujeito depende totalmente do "olhar que vem de fora". Assim, nós seríamos identificáveis apenas por meio daquilo que exteriorizamos. In "O espelho," the main character takes the narration into his hands and, based on an episode of his own life, explains his ambitious theory on the "two souls." The authoritarian pragmatism of the narration serves, however, to prove a monist perspective: the "exterior soul" ends up absorbing the "interior soul", so that the identity of the subject totally depends on the "look that comes from the outside." Therefore, we ourselves would be identifiable only by means of what we exteriorize. Through this functionalist perspective, the soul itself is fused with the person's status, and the subject's interiority expresses itself by means of nothing but a vague critical acidity, which anchors the fragile ironic conscience.Resumo em Português:

A reinterpretation of a proclamation by the narrator of Dom Casmurro; instead of taking chapter XCVII at face value as an erratum, I suggest that, rather than constituting a rupture, it constitutes one manifestation of a larger phenomenon within Machado’s works, ushering in and hastening the work’s end. If we agree with the old tenor Marcolini that life is an opera, then, we might label this gesture a “finale allegro”.
