Tal rede envolve temas persistentes tais como o da predestinação, o utilitarismo, o gnosticismo, a teoria da evolução e o assim chamado darwinismo social spenceriano. Abstract This article calls attention to the undercurrents of a close knit web of theological, philosophical, and biological hypotheses appearing in the novels and short stories of Machado de Assis. This web, once made apparent, is consistently displayed throughout the author's works, and blends seamlessly with major targets of the author's irony: Humanitism, Predestination, Utilitarianism, Gnosticism, among others. It is worth asking, when such themes are deeply woven, whether Quincas Borba's Humanitism deserves to be taken more seriously.Resumo em Português:

Resumo A obra de Machado de Assis tem sido analisada a partir de diferentes perspectivas, de diferentes campos do saber. Uma possibilidade teórica de análise da obra machadiana é da perspectiva dos estudos de religião e da teologia, considerando que já tem sido amplamente observado como Machado utilizou à farta o texto bíblico em vários de seus contos, romances e crônicas, quase sempre com sentido irônico. O presente artigo visa a apresentar como em "Na arca", que aparece em Papéis avulsos, de 1882, Machado apresenta sua versão do episódio bíblico do dilúvio na perspectiva do midraxe, uma (de muitas) abordagem hermenêutica judaica do texto bíblico. Mas o midraxe machadiano não é explicativo, como o judaico. Antes, é irônico, explorando as misérias e falhas humanas.Resumo em Inglês:
Abstract Machado de Assis's work has been analyzed from different perspectives and fields of knowledge. One possibility of theoretical analysis of the Machadian work is from the perspective of religious studies and theology, especially when considering that Machado’s extensive – and almost always ironic – use of biblical texts in his short stories, novels and chronicles has been widely observed. This articles aims at showing how in "Na arca," (In the ark), which is part of the 1882 publication, Papéis avulsos, Machado presents his own version of the biblical narrative of the flood in the perspective of midrash, one (of many) Jewish hermeneutical approaches to the biblical text. However, the Machadian midrash is not explanatory, just like the Jewish one. Rather, it is ironic, exploring human wretchedness and human failures.Resumo em Português:
Resumo A personagem Marocas, do conto "Singular ocorrência", inscreve-se na linha das personagens femininas intrigantes de Machado de Assis. O texto não informa sua profissão, mas incita o leitor a encontrá-la, por exclusão. Marocas a abandona, para dedicar-se a um homem casado. Tudo "parece" ir bem, até que, em noite de ausência do amante, ela procura outro homem. Tudo "parece" ir bem, pois o leitor conhece a história da personagem a partir do diálogo de dois homens parados numa esquina do Rio de Janeiro. A personagem é filtrada por esse diálogo. Este artigo tem como propósito discutir a construção dessa personagem e pensar, seguindo essa construção, o que esta nos diz dos homens que dialogam. A discussão realizada neste texto se esteia nas ideias de Lacan, sobretudo a de desejo.Resumo em Inglês:
Abstract Marocas, a character in the short story, "A Singular Occurrence," inscribes herself in the line of Machado de Assis’s intriguing female characters. Although her profession is not stated by the text, it urges the reader to find out by the process of elimination. Marocas leaves her profession to dedicate herself to a married man. Everything "seems" to be fine until the night her lover is absent and she seeks another man. Everything "seems" to be fine, because the reader becomes acquainted with her story by reading the dialogue between two men talking on a street corner in Rio de Janeiro. The character is filtered by this dialogue. The purpose of this article is to discuss the construction of the character and based on this construct consider what it tells us about the dialoguing men. The discussion is premised on Lacan's ideas, especially on desire.Resumo em Português:
Resumo Em muitas obras literárias, o homoerotismo se manifesta através de um olhar seduzido, revelado pela sensibilidade de um artista. A contemplação do corpo belo produz um efeito erótico, sob o olhar daquele que procura a perfeição na arte. Este ensaio discute as representações do masculino e as relações de amizade na obra Dom Casmurro, de Machado de Assis, a partir da descrição homoerotizada que Bentinho, o narrador, realiza de seu amigo Escobar.Resumo em Inglês:
Abstract In many literary works, the homoeroticism emerges from a seductive gaze, which is revealed through the sensitiveness of an artist. Contemplating the attractive body triggers an erotic effect when viewed by someone who seeks perfection in art. This essay discusses the representations of masculinity and friendships in Machado de Assis’s Dom Casmurro, based on narrator Bentinho’s homoerotized description of his friend Escobar.Resumo em Português:
Resumo Até que ponto o campo de produção erudita influi na distinção e na marginalização dos escritores? Analisa-se essa operação no mercado de bens simbólicos abordado por Bourdieu, onde a busca pela arte "pura" leva ao distanciamento estético entre objeto e público. Discute-se a análise desse sociólogo em paralelo à teoria da estética da recepção, quando o horizonte de expectativa permite interpretações no campo de produção literária. A aparição de Machado de Assis em meio a uma sociedade analfabeta e constituída por intelectuais francófilos é problematizada, por colocar em xeque a existência ou o tipo de campo de produção erudita que se forma em um país em que a presença da literatura é desacreditada pelos próprios intelectuais.Resumo em Inglês:
Abstract To what point does the field of erudite production influence the distinction and marginalization of writers? This operation is analyzed in the market of symbolic goods discussed by Bourdieu, where the search for "pure" art leads to the aesthetic distance between the work and the public. This sociologist’s analysis is discussed in parallel with the Reception Aesthetics Theory, when the ambit of expectation enables interpretations in the field of literary production. The appearance of Machado de Assis in the midst of an illiterate society and constituted by Francophile intellectuals is problematized by questioning the existence or the type of erudite field of production that is formed in a country where the presence of literature is disparaged by its own intellectuals.Resumo em Português:
Resumo Este artigo aborda "O caso da vara", conto publicado por Machado de Assis em 1891, na Gazeta de Notícias, e posteriormente compilado no volume Páginas recolhidas (1899). O foco do ensaio é ponderar sobre alguns traços dramáticos do conto, fazendo notar a presença de elementos do trágico e do farsesco. A partir disso, o texto investe na historicização desses traços, tendo em vista o "caso" relatado, a violência contra uma escrava, e seu contexto de publicação, os primeiros anos da República. Desse movimento de análise, surge a hipótese de que o conto de Machado incitaria a reflexão sobre a passagem da Monarquia à República no Brasil, em suas íntimas relações com o fim (ao menos em termos políticos e jurídicos) da escravidão.Resumo em Inglês:
Abstract This paper addresses "O caso da vara" (The Cane), a short story published by Machado de Assis in 1891, in the newspaper, Gazeta de Notícias, and later compiled in the volume, Páginas recolhidas (1899). The focus of this essay is to ponder some of the dramatic traits in the short story and highlight the presence of elements of the tragic and the farce. Based on this, the text invests in the historicization of these traits, in view of the "case" reported, violence against a slave, and the context for its publication, the early years of the Brazilian Republic. From this analysis, the hypothesis arises the hypothesis that Machado’s short story would encourage reflection about Brazil’s shift from Monarchy to Republic in its intimate relationship with the end (at least in political and legal terms) of the slavery.Resumo em Português:
