Dear reader,

The scientific production in Brazilian cardiology has undergone a significant increase in number of publications over the past few years. For this reason, Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia (Brazilian Archives of Cardiology), the largest and most important publication in its field in Brazil, has had difficulties in absorbing the large number of submissions it has received, and this has generated a major backlog of articles approved and waiting to be published.

Therefore, we have decided to double the number of pages of the journal until the problem is solved. From August to December 2006, you will receive the journal with twice the number of articles and, hopefully, within 6 months we will have eliminated the accumulation of papers approved in 2005 and in the first semester of 2006.

Since January 2006 measures have been taken to prevent this from recurring: articles have been reduced in size (maximum 5,000 words, which in some cases represents a reduction of more than 50% relative to papers previously approved), more rigorous acceptance criteria for approval of articles, publication of reviews by invitation only, and cancellation of articles with delays in revision by their authors. Starting in 2007, another 16 pages will be added to the journal which will allow approximately 3 more articles to be published per month.

Moreover, a new publication format has been created. As of this issue, the Archives will include "electronic pages". In this new section, articles on clinical updates within more specific themes, case reports, points of view, cardiovascular images, guidelines and letters will be published. These articles will be available via the Internet, at the journal’s website www.arquivosonline.com.br or at SciELO.

We hope these measures will improve the journal’s readability in 2007, as we aim to meet the demands of Brazilian Cardiology.
