Conceived as a way to reciprocate the participation of all collaborators of the Brazilian Archives of Cardiology, the ABC Award reaches its seventh edition, honoring five original articles published this year, plus than the most-cited original article in the last two years, as well as paying fair tribute to the most active reviewer for the year 2011.

The winning articles were selected by 30 national experts, chosen from among the main Archives reviewers, taking into consideration the aspects of research originality and relevance, design methodology, impact of results on its area of knowledge and the clarity and appropriateness of conclusions.

In the first four editions, ABC Awards were given to 10 original articles related to each of the major areas of knowledge in cardiovascular sciences. In the last three years, we selected five original contributions, regardless of the studies' areas of investigation. During this period, the award was presented to three original articles in the area of arterial hypertension1-3, three articles on heart failure and cardiomyopathies4-6, three articles related to cardiovascular surgery7-9, two articles in basic and experimental research10,11 , and one article in the areas of arrhythmia12, epidemiology13, exercise and rehabilitation14 and coronary failure15, respectively.

Regarding the articles that received the ABC Award in 2011, different aspects of cardiology have been addressed. Nastari et al6 analyzed the intramyocardial adrenergic activation in chagasic cardiomyopathy in comparison to coronary artery disease, by quantifying norepinephrine in myocardial tissue. The clinical and echocardiographic results in the immediate and long-term postoperative period of Ebstein's anomaly repair using the cone reconstruction technique were studied by da Silva et al7. The two basic and experimental research projects selected, developed by Brito Filho et al10 and Nascimento et al11, included the evaluation of hemodynamic effects of right ventricular overload promoted by selective obstruction of the pulmonary vasculature in pigs10 and the role of nitric oxide/L-arginine pathway in the vascular response of obese mice on a high-fat diet11. Finally, the epidemiological study of Fernandes et al13 evaluated the prevalence of dyslipidemia in 2,720 adult patients and correlated its occurrence with physical exercise in childhood, adolescence and adulthood.

As in previous years, the five selected original contributions came from dissertations or doctoral theses defended in postgraduate programs of our country, demonstrating the great importance of these programs for the dissemination of scientific research in Brazil.

The ABC Awards of this year also paid homage to the original article with the highest number of citations in international journals over the past two years. The study by Carvalho et al16, published in 2009, which addresses the validation of the Portuguese version of the "Minnesota Living with Heart Failure" questionnaire to assess quality of life has currently 20 citations in journals with an international impact.

The context presented here demonstrates the great diversity and relevance of national scientific production in cardiovascular sciences, which has the Brazilian Archives of Cardiology as its main dissemination vehicle. Hence, we perceive the consolidation of the ABC Scientific Publication Award as an important event, in terms of encouragement and recognition of Brazilian cardiologic science.
