Quantification and classification of construction and demolition waste in the municipality of Pelotas, RS

Construction is one of the economic sectors that has the largest impact in the environmental. One of the main impacts caused by this activity is the large amount of waste that is generated, which is disposed irregularly in most Brazilian municipalities, aggravating sanitation problems in urban areas. In order to address this problem, the Federal Government has undertaken some initiatives, including the creation of a resolution that establishes the development and implementation of an integrated waste management plan for the construction industry, based on the features of each region. The aim of this article is to present the results of a qualitative and quantitative assessment of the production of construction and demolition waste (CDW) in the municipality of Pelotas, RS, carried out with the support of a computer software. The results indicated that 315.08 m³ of CDW are produced daily in the municipality, at a per capita generation rate of 1.23 kg/inhabitant per year. The density of CDW found was 1.28 ton/m³ and gravimetric composition showed that 88% of CDW produced was Class A waste, which has a great potential for being reused and recycled.
