Number 3, Volume 26 of Acta Limnologica Brasiliensia Journal comprises ten articles on different communities, developed in several Brazilian regions, and addressing distinct processes. Four of these papers (01, 05, 08 and 10) are studies presented at the XIV Brazilian Congress of Limnology held in the municipality of Bonito, Mato Grosso do Sul state, in September 2013. Initially, we proposed to publish a thematic issue exclusively with papers presented at the congress. However, because of the characteristics of the works presented at the congress, which address different communities, regions and approaches that have characterized the Numbers published with manuscripts sent by spontaneous demand, we chose to prepare Numbers comprising both works of spontaneous demand and those presented at the congress. In this Number, the articles address distinct communities, such as macroinvertebrates, macrophytes and phytoplankton. The environments in which these studies were carried out are also different, and include streams, wetland and reservoir. The geographic regions studied are also widely distributed: from the southern end of the country (southern Rio Grande do Sul state), passing through the states of Santa Catarina, Parana and Sao Paulo, until the north region (Amazonas state). I also consider important to highlight other differences between the manuscripts in this Issue, but those that are recurrent in Acta and regard more applied or basic themes. In this Number, the article developed in a subtropical coastal lagoon addresses a more basic theme, evaluating the metabolism of the lagoon based on determinations of CO2 and O2. On the other hand, the work conducted in the "arc of deforestation" region presents wide practical applicability, because it assessed the environmental integrity of streams in water basins that have been submitted to extensive agriculture based on the community of odonatas. I also would like to underscore the study on the scientometric analysis about water quality. This paper reports the growing concern of the international scientific community with the amount and quality of water for human consumption, the economy, health, and the conservation of aquatic environments. Acta Limnologica Brasiliensia Journal has contributed to the theoretical and conceptual matters in Limnology and Ecology, besides contributing to the aspects related to the use and conservation of aquatic ecosystems, as illustrated in the manuscripts published in this Number. Unfortunately, in Brazil, federal, state and municipal agencies responsible for water resources management have given little attention to limnologists and the results of their research. Recently (October 1st to 3rd), the IV Seminar on Limnological Studies under Subtropical Climate was held in Florianopolis, Santa Catarina state, addressing the theme "Science in search of answers to the demands of society". In this event, limnologists demonstrated clear concern with the need to direct water management to the demands of society and the conservation of aquatic ecosystems. In addition, several researchers exposed their extension activities and their contribution to the solution of problems, suggesting that we are fulfilling our role as professionals and are not negligent about matters regarding water and aquatic environments. Acta has also been fulfilling its mission to contribute to a comprehensive ecological knowledge and to solve problems of society in relation to the water, with the publication of articles on basic and applied limnology.
