Traces of Modernism in O perfeito cozinheiro das almas deste mundo

Abstract

As an unpretentiously Dadaist art object, the diary written by those who frequented the garçonnière kept by Oswald de Andrade in 1918 consists of an inventive bricolage album, interspersing images with writing in a game full of puns. We locate this book-object as an anticipator of the multifaceted lineage of Modernism, through Miss Cyclone, a schoolgirl who defied the social norms of the time, exploring the anthropophagic structure present in O perfeito cozinheiro das almas deste mundo. The enigmatic figure of “Miss Cyclone”, at the same time muse and author of the diary, is also its reason for existence, and vice versa. We only know Cyclone through Oswald de Andrade, but would it be possible to observe and reconstruct Oswald through Cyclone? Studying her implies studying Oswald, but it is also possible to do the opposite. The main source used was the Diário da garçonnière, in addition to letters and biographies.
