Inhabiting between times and cities: A reading of Algún lugar (2009) by Paloma Vidal

Abstract

In Paloma Vidal's novel Algún lugar (2009), migration is presented as a determining issue that shapes the narrator's experience of time, space and bonds. The plot consists of the story of a journey that in principle is not a journey, but a move to Los Angeles to pursue a doctorate with a scholarship. The move is short-lived, as neither the narrator nor her partner is able to adapt to the city. But Vidal's novel is also the story of an inadequacy that runs counter to the expectations of the globalized world, where travel and sojourns abroad are presented as desirable goals. In parallel to the foreign journey, the narrator makes a journey inward and backward that generates in her a disconnection from her immediate context, a fact that will be echoed in the structure of the text.
