Si bienhemos establecido diálogos entre las representaciones visuales (pinturas) y escritas (Memorias) de las batallas de Espinosa, se deben hacer algunos llamados de atención. El primero, tanto las pinturas como las Memorias fueron realizadas como mínimo treinta años después de los acontecimientos: la primera edición de las memorias es de 1876.
