APPROPRIATION AND ERASURE AS ARTISTIC PROCESSES: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF TREE OF CODES BY JONATHAN SAFRAN FOER

ABSTRACT

The printed book has not been made obsolete by the introduction and dissemination of e-books. Instead, this phenomenon pushed printed media to explore its potential. Currently, thanks to advances in graphic technology, new possibilities in printed media arise, making the full out of the creation of literary books. One of them is Tree of Codes by Jonathan Safran Foer. The author has appropriated the work The Street of Crocodiles by Bruno Schulz by removing parts of the original through incisions in the paper, which resulted in a work produced entirely through erasing parts of the original. This article analyses the creation process of Tree of Codes by tracing parallels with examples of appropriation and erasure in the arts.
