O artigo analisa a implementação dos Contratos Territoriais de Estabelecimento (CTE's) na agricultura francesa. Criados em 1999, durante o Governo de Lionel Jospin, trata-se de um instrumento através do qual são introduzidas mudanças nas políticas agrícolas e nas estratégias adotadas pelos agricultores. Infelizmente, os CTE's não receberam o apoio social e econômico necessário e não se mostraram fortes o suficiente para resistir à oposição exercida pelo lobby das corporações agrárias (FNSEA e CNJA).

Abstract in English:

This article focuses on the implementation of Territorial Farm Contracts (TFCs) in French agriculture. These were set up during the government of Lionel Jospin, by the 1999 Agricultural Orientation Act in order to introduce changes in both farming policy and individual strategies of farmers. Unfortunately, the TFCs did not receive the necessary social and economic support to hold against the opposition from the lobby of French agrarian corporatives (FNSEA and CNJA).

No presente artigo, situamos a educação ambiental no contexto da gestão de Unidades de Conservação (UCs) e a sua relevância para a construção de processos democráticos que favoreçam a construção de sociedades sustentáveis. Apresentamos conceitos relevantes para a reflexão proposta, um breve histórico da construção de conselhos em UCs e algumas de suas premissas e indicadores de avaliação, como contribuição à prática de gestores de tais áreas protegidas.

In this article, we place the environmental education into the context of the management of conservation units (CU) and emphasize its relevancy for the implementation of democratic processes which contribute to the formation of "sustainable societies". We present important concepts to be reflected upon, a brief history of the formation of the UC councils and some of their premises and evaluation indicators, as a contribution to the practice of the managements of such protected areas.

Enfocaremos o Parque Nacional do Jaú e a Reserva de Desenvolvimento Sustentável de Mamirauá, nos quais grupos reivindicaram direitos jurídicos específicos baseados na etnicidade. Refletiremos sobre como a taxonomia população tradicional foi empregada para categorizar os residentes no interior e no entorno dessas áreas e como tal uso convergiu ou se distanciou de propostas conservacionistas.

In the present paper we analyse the Jaú Nacional Park and the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve, in which groups have claimed ethnic specific rights. We reflect about how the category of traditional people has been used to classify residents inside and around these natural protected areas, and whether or not this use has converged to the conservationists' proposals.

O presente artigo coloca-se como tarefa investigar os vínculos discursivos que se estabelecem em nossa sociologia da inautenticidade entre, de um lado, o lugar da natureza na sociabilidade brasileira contemporânea e, de outro, o problema do status da modernidade no Brasil. Interessa ao autor responder às seguintes questões: 1) de que maneira as relações entre modernidade no Brasil e mundo natural configuram-se, implícita e explicitamente, na abordagem do pensamento social brasileiro que tem em Freyre, Sérgio Buarque de Holanda, Faoro e DaMatta as suas figuras centrais?; e 2) quais as implicações teóricas desses vínculos para os diagnósticos traçados a respeito do status da modernidade no Brasil contemporâneo?

This article aims at analysing the discursive links that exist in the very core of a key approach in the Brazilian sociological tradition (the so-called patrimonial-patriarchal strand) between the place of nature in contemporary Brazilian society, on the one side, and the status of modernity in that society, on the other. The author is mainly concerned with providing answers to the following questions: 1) What are the ways through which the main figures of such patrimonial-patriarchal sociological approach (Freyre, Holanda, Faoro and DaMatta) envision the relations between modernity in Brazil and the natural world? 2) What are the theoretical implications of their diagnoses about the status of modernity in contemporary Brazil?

O presente artigo discute as práticas de aperfeiçoamento de si e do cuidado com o ambiente, voltadas para a saúde e o bem estar físico, mental e espiritual. O foco desta discussão está dirigida para os pontos de interseção entre práticas ecológicas e religiosas, que dão origem a processos de sacralização da natureza e de "naturalização" do sagrado. O campo de interesse empírico são as práticas religiosas de grupos ecológicos e as práticas ecológicas de grupos religiosos. Elegemos como referenciais metodológicos e teóricos as contribuições da filosofia da percepção de Merleau-Ponty, da psicologia ecológica de Bateson, da antropologia fenomenológica de Thomas Csordas e da epistemologia ecológica de Tim Ingold, na medida em que estas perspectivas somam-se no intento de colapsar as dualidades mente e corpo, sujeito e ambiente, natureza e cultura. Encontramos no conceito de paisagem, enquanto corpo do mundo, um ponto de convergência destas diferentes abordagens. Assim, a hipótese que acionamos é a de que a paisagem, enquanto corpo do mundo, pode ser tomada como o solo da cultura, no sentido de que o sujeito humano, em sua condição corporal de ser no mundo, está não apenas implicado na paisagem, mas essa é a condição de seu engajamento no mundo e na cultura.

This paper aims at identifying practices for self-perfectioning and environmental care linked to physical as well as mental and spiritual health and well-being. It focuses on the points of intersection between ecological and religious practices that engender processes for the "sacralization of nature" and the "naturalization of the sacred". Our field of empirical interest is the one of religious practices of ecological groups and the ecological practices of religious groups. As theoretical and methodological references we chose contributions from Merleau-Ponty's philosophy of perception, Bateson's ecological psychology, Thomas Csordas' phenomenological anthropology and Tim Ingold's ecological epistemology, since these perspectives join in the purpose to break up the dualities mind/body, subject/environment, nature/culture. We encounter in the concept of landscape a point of convergence between these different approaches as a body of the world. Thus the hypothesis which we support is that the landscape, as a body of the world, may be taken as the soil of culture, in the sense that the human subject, in his or her corporeal condition of being of this world is not only set in the landscape, but the landscape is the very condition of his or her engagement in the world and in culture.

Este trabalho trata das relações de poder no conselho consultivo da APA-Sul, uma unidade de conservação localizada na Região Metropolitana de Belo Horizonte. Observa-se uma sub-representação dos setores populares, e os representantes de renda média-alta temem a favelização da região. Conseqüentemente, o conflito ambiental surge em torno da perda da qualidade ambiental nas referidas áreas, em parte associada às alternativas de habitação popular, abrindo oportunidade para discursos que justifiquem a segregação social no espaço e a elitização da paisagem em questão.

This paper talks about the power relations within the consultative council of the APA-Sul, a conservation area situated in the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte. There the lower-class sectors are apparently underrepresented and higher middle class representatives are concerned about the slumisation of the region. Consequently an environmental conflict arises about the loss of "environmental quality" of the area, partly associated with lower class housing, providing opportunities of discourses to justify social segregation in space and the elitization of the landscape at stake.

O presente artigo trata da colonização alemã no Rio Grande do Sul do século XIX, a partir da perspectiva da história ambiental, dando atenção especial às relações estabelecidas entre os colonos e a floresta subtropical. O texto analisa o que sentiram os imigrantes em seus primeiros contatos com a fauna e a flora regionais e discute o "desmatamento civilizador" empreendido nas antigas colônias, demonstrando as relações predatórias estabelecidas na nova terra e o impacto ambiental desse processo.

The topic of this article is the German colonization in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul in the 19th century from the perspective of environmental history and with special attention to what the settlers felt when they first got into touch with subtropical forest. The reader finds a discussion about the deforestation on behalf of civilization and the environmental impact of this process.

Este artigo apresenta um estudo de caso referente à implantação de técnicas de ecodesign em uma empresa da cadeia eletrônica automotiva. Inicia-se com uma revisão sobre sustentabilidade ambiental, ecologia industrial, ecodesign e análise de ciclo de vida. Segue-se com a descrição de algumas práticas ambientalmente corretas na indústria automotiva, e se finaliza com o processo de implantação, as diretivas de projeto e uma avaliação preliminar dos resultados até agora alcançados.

This paper presents a case study discussing the introduction of ecodesign techniques in a company of the electronic automotive industry. The paper begins by reviewing environmental sustainability, industrial ecology, ecodesign and life cycle analysis. The report contains some environmentally accepted practices in the automotive industry and concludes with the process of implantation and establishment of design policies and with a preliminary assessment of the results so far yielded.

O desenvolvimento de ferramentas de simulação, como os jogos de papéis, pressupõe a integração das várias representações e conhecimentos, o que garante a sua legitimidade e a possibilidade de os utilizar como plataforma de mediação na discussão dos conflitos socioambientais. Este artigo discute a utilização da abordagem de modelagem de acompanhamento no desenvolvimento de dois jogos de papéis sobre a gestão da água e do solo em mananciais periurbanos da Região Metropolitana de São Paulo (RMSP).

The development of simulation tools like role-playing games require the integration of some knowledge and several representations which guarantee its legitimacy and the possibility to be used as a mediation platform in collective discussions about environmental conflicts. The paper presents and discusses the use of the companion modeling approach in the development of two role-playing games dealing with water and land management in the periurban catchment of the metropolitan region of São Paulo.

Faz-se, por meio de uma abordagem ambiental histórico-dialética, a caracterização dos processos auríferos desenvolvidos no município de Faina, Goiás. São analisadas três atividades: mineração escrava, mineração de dragagem e mineração industrial. Evidenciou-se que a exploração por dragagem tem um maior poder impactante. Sobretudo, a mineração aurífera em Faina contribuiu para a história ambiental local e para o resgate dessa no Brasil.

We have analysed the three main processes of gold mining - slave mining, dredging and industrial gold mining -, by means of an environmental historical-dialectic approach in the municipality of Faina, in the Brazilian State of Goias State. The data showed that dredging had the greatest environmental impact on the area. The gold mining activities in Faina strongly contributed to the environmental history of the municipality and to the memory of this type of mining in Brazil.

As experiências de sucesso na estratégia de motivar as populações locais, organizá-las e treiná-las, para a realização de inovações produtivas, revelam que as comunidades onde os indivíduos interagem mais uns com os outros e em que a rede de relações sociais, em seu conjunto, está bem integrada tendem a superar as suas limitações com mais facilidade, tirando-se maior proveito das oportunidades que favorecem a elaboração de estratégias e táticas coletivas, aumentando o poder de escolha e de decisão dos atores envolvidos.

Successful experiences in motivating local populations show the importance of organizing people and training them to develop innovative projects. It also reveals that communities in which people interact more frequently with each other and where social networks, on a whole, are well integrated, are more likely to overcome their limitations and to take advantage of their opportunities. This in return favors the development of strategies and collective tactics, increasing the power of choice and decision of the community members.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo analisar, sob a ótica do desenvolvimento sustentável, características socioeconômicas do desenvolvimento da piscicultura no baixo rio São Francisco alagoano. Foram entrevistados piscicultores ativos e inativos da região, entre março e julho de 2005. Os resultados indicaram, principalmente, que o nível de renda pode ser determinante para o desenvolvimento de uma piscicultura comercial sustentável, com parte dos pequenos produtores dependendo de subsídio governamental.

Abstract in English:

This work aims at analyzing the development of fish farming in the lower region of the São Francisco River in the State of Alagoas, Brazil. We interviewed active and inactive fish farmers from this region between March and July 2005. The obtained results show mainly that the level of income can be determining for the development of sustainable and profitable fish farming taking into account that some of the small producers depend on governmental subsidies.

Ultimamente é comum as políticas públicas de desenvolvimento econômico considerarem também a proteção ambiental. Mas elas se mostram pouco eficazes se construídas sem a participação popular. Essa falta de participação deriva de relações sociais de poder, desconfiança nas instituições e percepção distorcida de problemas ambientais. A solução é somar as contribuições de todos os segmentos envolvidos desde o início da elaboração de políticas ambientais.

It has lately been common practice that public policies for economic development take environmental protection into consideration. However, they have shown to be ineffective if formulated without popular participation. This lack in participation derives from social power relations, mistrust in institutions and a distorted perception of environmental problems. The solution is to consider the contributions of all stakeholders right from the beginning where environmental policies are formulated.
